Colpscopy Recovery - What to expect after colposcopy
Saturday June 21, 2003
I am looking for some input from others that have had a colposcopy done. What exactly did your colposcopy consist of? And what was the recovery process like as far as within a week or so afterwards (cramping? discharge? bleeding?) length and severity of all? Any input would be very helpful! Join this discussion!

I just had a colposcopy. There is nothing to it! It’s not anymore uncomfortable than a pap. Well maybe a little bit more, but not much. I just had it done yesterday and there is a bit of discharge which is normal. The pain is gone (but there was a bit of pain for most of the day yesterday). The only thing I’m experiencing now is itchiness. I’m going to call my doc to see if that’s normal. Anyway it’s a fairly simple procedure and there is nothing to worry about!
I had my colposcpoy done eight weeks ago on wednesday coming. It wasn’t half as bad as some of the stories i had heard. It was a little bit uncorfortable and i bled for a couple of days. the worst part is waiting for the results. Im still waiting an have to ring on wednesday if i have’nt got them by then.
I had mine a few hours ago today because my pap test result was abnormal…I do have a bit of discomfort and few minutes go by with some mild pains in the area. I also have some spotting which is very light yellow-ish discharge. As stated in the other post, the worst part now is waiting for the results…which is in 2 weeks! So scared..keep thinking about the worst..Since I’m only 23 it’s scary to think something might be wrong. Does anyone know what number of all abnormal paps possibly a % that results in cancer? After just having done a colposcopy?
I had a colposcopy done 5 days ago and have to wait 3-4 weeks for the results and I know what you are saying about thinking the worse. I read that 98% of abnormal results come back clear, so to be honest we have a good chance at it being ok! I have come on my period today and was wondering if anyone knew if I can use a tampax yet?
I had my Colposcopy done yesterday afternoon and it wasn’t so painful because i went to a different doctor this time (its my 2nd one) and they numbed it but afterwards i had a Lot of cramping and last night i found that i had some of the skin or something that had came out and today im finding a bit more i have no idea if thats bad but im waiting til the office opens to call.. Just asked to be numbed and that hurts wayy less than just going through it with no numbing
I had mine yesterday. I’m 44years old, it was extremely painful. I had and still have cramping and discharg. When I woke up I noticed that I couldn’t feel my skin in the vaginal area It felt very dry and leathery to the touch. I don’t know if this is normal anthough Doc did say that there would be some slothing afterwards
i had a Colposcopy done 6 weeks ago and i have never been away from the doc with cramps and spotting all the time. am going back tomorrow as iv been of work with it.
I had a colposcopy about two hours ago. It was uncomfortable, but just about as uncomfortable as bad cramps. It burned slightly and cramped immediately afterward. I have very mild cramps now (took 2 advil). I am 22 and this experience was nothing to be afraid of.
I had my colposcopy 8 days ago, I agrre it is a little uncomfortable during the procedure. The Doctor showed me a small section that he removed to be sent away! He then burnt some of the cells away which smelt like burnt hair. I had a small amount of discharge for the next day or two with mild crampy pains. They advised me to refrain from sexual intercourse, swimming and wearing a Tampon for one month.
I thought after the 2 days of discharge I was fine but on the 6th day I had a dark brown discharge with small bits in it I have started to wear sanitry towells as it is getting slightly heavier. It has no smell so I don’t think it is an infection or my period as I am still breast feeding my 5 month old and am taking the pill cerezette both of which have stopped me from having a period but you never know.
Had a colposcopy 3 hours ago, it was less painful than a pap test, just felt like cold air puffs, no cramping yet, only light spotting.
Nothing to be afraid of, have to wait up to 4 weeks for results of biopsy.
Good luck everyone x
Hey, I am 19 years old and have had two abnormal paps and i am freaking out because my colposcopy is tomorrow
any encouraging words?
I have to have a colposcopy in a few weeks? Do they always have to perform a biopsy when doing a colposcopy? I’ve never had one so I want to know what to expect..
Andrea,
A colposcopy is really a tool that lets your doctor get a closer look at your cervix. A biopsy is not required, although a biopsy or another procedure is often performed during colposcopy.
Best wishes,
Tracee
I had a colpscopy today and not to try to worry you but I found it extremely painful, I even cried a bit. I’m 19 and I was just scared and in general it was very unpleasant. It happened about five hours ago and I am still experiencing pain and bleeding.
*2/13/09*I just had my 2nd colposcopy two days ago and had 3 biopsies taken both times. The procedure isn’t that painful, but more or less just very uncomfortable and much longer than a regular pap smear. If you can remember to take 2-3 Motrin before hand it really does help. I woke up this morning cramping pretty bad and just popped 3 motrin, worked like a charm. I also found the cramping to come on quickly while being active and picking up heavy objects. I believe it is also normal to spot for several days after the procedure.
I had a colposcopy 2 hours ago. It was my first time and I also had a biopsy. They took about 5 samples including one inside the uterus. I don’t want to scare you if you are having it done, but it was more than uncomfortable to me. It is an odd pain, not like one you would expect from a cut or punch. I experienced immediate cramping and when they took a sample from my uterus, it didn’t hurt at all. That one felt like deep cramping. I was crying because I was alone and upset about the whole thing and the doctor and nurse were very kind and ensured me it would be ok. Just remember all the other women that have gone through this and find the courage to be strong!! And as scared as you get always remember this is for your health. =)
Im so scared..U guys make it seem like its so bad…I hate when things have to be done down there. its so uncomfortable and my heart is pounding.
I had a colposcopy back in december. I have to say that my biopsy was painful and uncomfortable to the point i nearly fainted. However for the actual colposcopy I requested general anesthetic. When I wok up everything was grand. No pain at all, no bleeding at all just some discharge. However I am still getting discharge of a green nature and a bit worried if this normal. will be seeing doc about this and will keep you posted.
I had a Colpscopy yesterday, I wasn’t told to take any over the counter painkillers before it. For me it was extremely painful even if it did last probably less than 5 minutes, I was trying so hard not to cry, but it was horrible, and as soon as I left the office I I cried alot. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I was very nervous, and it caused me to tense up during the whole procedure. I woke up this morning and I still have some pain and some light brown discharge. My best advice is to probably take some advil, and try to relax as much as possible.
I had a colposcopy 3/13. I was sooo nervous! I’m 45 years old and have never had an abnormal pap in my life. My dr. presribed a valium for me which REALLY helped ease my nerves. The procedure was uncomfortable but every time the dr. grabbed for the biopsy, she would have me take a deep breath and cough when she cut. That was amazing! It really relieved pain. I was pretty dizzy afterwards and had to stay lying down for just a few minutes and then went home. I had a little spotting for a couple of days and then my period. My biospy (three were taken including one from my uterus) took about three days for results. All clear! Just hormonal changes. Hang in there! Ask for valium, take Advil, and COUGH if you have to have a biopsy!
i think the worst part was the vinegar..it burned horribly. i got numbing medication sprayed before they took the pinches out. i didn’t feel it, just heard it. and then you get the discharge that looks like coffee grounds. but this morning i had a large clump come out and i don’t know if it is normal or not. i am guessing it is fine but still makes me nervous. and the cramping wasn’t that bad at all. did anyone else have a large clump come out?
Uncomfortable:
I just had the biopsy done yesterday at 11:30 a.m. I had cramps all night and some discharge and bleeding. Just a little while ago, I too had some kind of clumpy tissue come out with coffee ground type material. I was worried and its so late that I can’t call the doctor to check so I thought I would check online to see if anyone else had the same. I’m still getting cramps but they are milder than they were yesterday. Good luck!
I had my second Colpospy yesterday and was not fun. I am 29, the doctor did a biopsy…actually three, but they did not hurt. I didn;t really even feel the “pinch”. The most painful part was the uterus scraping. I had immediate, severe cramping, which reminded me of early labor pains. last night i had some sharp pains in that area as well as cramping. Today I had to call the colpscopy clinic because I had some very concerning discharge. They told me the paste they use to help stop the bleeding will come out in the next week as a dark spot on my panties, but I have had some very large pieces of what looks like tissue and some graniy black pieces. Blah! The whole experience is very unpleasant, but equally necessary. I have to have another and will not go wihtout an Ativan this time. I agree with Rebecca above, and will be asking for some meds next time to help me relax. I am jealous if the only thee day wait time! I am in Canada, so I have to wait up to 4 weeks for the results as well. That is the worst part. I used to work in a lab, so I feel 4 weeks is almost negligent, hopefully I will hear much earlier than that. Hang in there ladies!
So I had mine done on Monday. It was quite painful (I have a small vagina and they had to use a larger spreader this time to be able to see, so at least some of the pain is due to that), I had some pretty bad cramping and had to take the day off work. I also had some brown, clumpy, “coffee grounds” discharge, but my doctors explained to me that this is completely normal and to be expected. I was feeling a bit uneasy as I have been having some burning and itching since the procedure, which seems to correspond with when I “pass” the discharge, but everything I have read seems to say this is rather normal. I am going to call my doctor anyway and will post again if its something to worry about. If anyone knows I should be worried about the itching, please let me know!
Be strong girls!
Hi, I had a colposcopy Thu morning and my doc said no sex or tampons for a day. I had sex Fri around midnight (stupid on hindsight, I know) I had bleeding during sex and now the gross coffee grind stuff. Should I call my doc for possible infection? Please advise, I am freaking out. Thanks!
when i had mine done i bleed for two months afterward and the doctor said this was normal. please if you have had the same problem or are having get a second doctor to talk to and tell them the problems from it. i am still very weak from this “operation” and strongly advise caution when the bleeding continues for more then a week.
It’s not that bad at all! RELAX! I had my first colposcopy and biopsy performed yesterday 5/6. My Dr. took 2 biopsies. I took 2 advils approximately one hour before the procedure and had my I-pod on the entire time to relax and I swear it wasn’t that bad! Just uncomfortable, but DEFINILTEY bearable. Nervousness can definitley make it worse, so bring some music with you and take deep breaths. I even sang out loud a bit and it helped! Spotting, discharge is totally normal the first few days, as is “stiffness” or “soreness” in the vagina. For me, sitting hurts alot! The worst part is waiting for the results. Relax by thinking of fun things you’ll do a few days after the procedure such as going out for lunch or dinner with friends/boyfriend. Talk to people you trust before and after the procedure. Also, think of how many women will be going through it the same time you are and how many have gone through it already. This will make you stronger. We women go through so much, but we’re tough and will get through it! Good Luck sweetie…you’re going to be fine
I had a colpscopy 5 days ago.im 19 and this is the third time ive had one.The first one was when i was 13,not so bad. This time(after having a kid)it was so uncomfortable and i was in pain so much.i hurt so bad to stand. hi everyone i had a colscopy done on may 7. I had a little brown discharge and a little heavy bleeding for about 4 days i called the nurse and she said it was normal but now I am 2 wks late on my period and that is highly unusual for me cuz i am pretty regular. I cant be pregnant cuz my husband cant have anymore kids. Has this happened to anyone ? I am worried!Any ideas y this could be ?
Well, I had my first colposcopy 5/28/09. I just turned 27 6 days before (happy birthday, right). The colposcopy itself is nothing to be worried about…it is less invasive than a pap test. However the biopsy is uncomfortable. I had about 8-10 biopsies taken (a bit nervous now seeing everyone else having only up to three). It was a bit painful, like having really intense period cramps. But it only lasts for a few minutes. I brought my husband, squeezed his hand and it was not that bad. Afterwards I had some light cramping for a day or two, but nothing major. Now 3 days later I still have that fleshy discharge, but the WORST is SEVERE ITCHING!! I can’t stand it! It is like a horrible yeast infection or something! Could I have gotten something from the procedure? Does this mean infection? Is this just healing? I can not call the Dr till tomorrow, but this is driving me absolutely crazy! It itches so bad! Anyone else have/had this problem?? Thank you for everyones input on this subject-very helpful!
I am 25 and have a colposcopy scheduled for wednesday 6/3/09. Have never done this before and am pretty nervous about it but have talked to a friend who has gone through it and am taking my sister with me for support. Thank you for all your posts sometimes it’s most helpful to hear you’re not the only one with the anxiety and that others have made it through. Good luck ladies!
I have mine done today… Did not hurt at all. I feeling happy i did it!
I had mine done on the 4th of June 09. Really uncomfomfortable and unpleasant I cried. My gyn did the colposcopy, biopsy and the treatment to burn the abnomal cells. I felt like down there was in hell! However I have not bled ever since like the gyn had said i would. is this normal? I also felt absolutely no pain afterwards and still have not felt pain
. Just a bit of discharge some clear or creamy and no nasty small. All in all , I’m pleased. Is it normal not to bleed after?
I had my colpscopy about 24 hours ago. After reading into the procedure, I prepared for any pain I might endure. I did take acetametaphin 3hrs before and relaxed. I also took AZO yeast to prevent an infection. It really isn’t as bad as most are saying. Yes it comes with some uncomfortabilty, but very bearable as the those moments are very few seconds. The vinegar they spary didn’t sting like he said it would. The 4 biopsys… didn’t feel them, just heard the snipping (eww lol), we used the COUGH method which avoids feeling or lessening of as the biopsy is taken. The swiping of the swab all the way back was the most uncomfortable feeling. NOT pain, just hurry up and finish and relief when taken out. So overall. After reading all the pain stories… I’m just like, “that’s it?!”. After wards I did have the feeling something was just in me and taken out. But I was up and out like nothing! I did take another dose of acetametaphin 6 hrs later and this morning. Brown discharge… normal! This morning no more of all like before… just this afternoon I noticed nothing on my liner, but tiny black specs and small glob/thread likes of a rubberish tissue. I am gonna be smart and use no tampons and NO sex for 2 weeks (my cycle starts in a week anyway, hopefully that helps move all the stuff outta me!). I am being very optimistic that nothing bad is found, and if there is, it can be removed!! Be calm ladies its not bad at all!
Hey,
I had my colposcopy done on the 3rd June. It was a little uncomfortable a little sorer than the smear test but i didnt think it was anything to out of the ordinary. My period was due round about the time i got it done so there was some heavy bleeding which i am putting down to that. My persiod usually lasts 5days, it has been 10days since i had the colposcopy done and i am still bleeding, sometimes not that heavy and i think its gone then maybe an hour later its back all hells blazing lol. Does anyone know if this is normal??? as the doc said to expect an interesting discharge? Also feeling a little itchy up there. And to the girl asking about the tampon..i was told not to insert anything for 6-8 weeks.
I had my 1st colposcopy n biopsy done last thur (11/6/09) and found it very uncomfortable! I woz pretty nervous as my appointment woz ova half hr l8 and i fink this made matas worse. I woz told 2 cough wen the nurse did the biopsy but still felt a stingin sensation. Aftawards i felt dizzy so had 2 b tilted on the bed n had 2 eat a sugar tablet and drink sum water. I woz told that i mite bleed 4 a few days n 2 refrain from avin sex, usin a tampon n goin 2 the gym 4 a few days. Wen i got home i got upset as my stomach cramps set in which av still not gone away 4 days later. I had a tissue like piece of skin cum out on the friday which woz brown n the blood woz like a watery pink colour. Then on the sat the bleedin got alot worse n turned a dark purple colour. I also had a v large ‘fing’ cum out which woz bout 2 inches long. It woz dark purple n bloody on 1 end n skin colour on the ova end. I woz v concerned as 2 wat this woz as i hadnt been told that this mite happen so i took a foto of it 2 show the nurses on mon. I waited until this morn (mon) and foned the clinic n they sed that they used monsels solution 2 stop my bleedin n they fink this is wat came away! They dint even want 2 c the picture. I woznt happy wiv this explination as if the monsels solution had worked then surely i wudnt of bled so much. I went 2 c my doc this aftanoon n shes not happy so is avin me in thur 2 do sum swobs 2 check 4 infection. The bleedin is now a greeny, yellowy, browney colour. I fink that the nurses shud give more info as ive had 2 find out 4 myself wat woz actually done n wat the symptoms cud b!
Hi ladies,
I had a colposcopy/biopsy done a week ago. It was the 2nd one for me and this round definitely seemed more uncomfortable than the first time I did it but I think the nurse had to do more biopsies this time. All in all though, don’t worry about it! If you’re scheduled to have one, you’ll be totally fine. It’s just a little uncomfortable and you’ll feel cramping but if you just breathe and try to relax, it is very manageable. We women are so strong and can handle so many challenges. Girl power! Also, today I had a huge “clump” like thing come out of my vag when I went to the bathroom and was completely freaked out because that didn’t happen before. I seriously thought I was giving birth to an alien. I’m relieved to hear that I’m not the only one that’s happened to. So thanks for sharing everyone!
I had my first colposcopy done 4 days ago and Ive also gotten the typical discharge and cramps everyone been getting on this board from the procedures. But omg Im getting more and more itchy bumps on the outer labia and now spreading to inner. I’ve been tested negative for all STD. My only guess is an allergic reaction or yeast infection from the solution they’ve used. Any who had an reaction like mine please share. I’m very concern and I hope it more common that it is b/c most ppl here do not have itchiness afterwards.
I’m 21 and i had a colposcopy and a triple biopsy done yesterday and it was the most pain that i’ve ever been in my life!!!! It hurt sooo much! i dont know if its just that i didnt know what to expect cause it was the first one or what? but i just have some questions about sexual intercourse after wards…like how long to wait? and the usage of tampons and whatnot? my gyno never told me anything!!
I had my first colposcopy and biopsy today. What a disaster! When I got there the power was off in the clinic so I had to wait like an hour to even be seen. They finally called my name to get the colposcopy done and while I was getting the procedure it was so hot since the power and consequently the air conditioning wasn’t working. The procedure itself didnt hurt that much, the biopsies were no big deal, the worst part was being held open for so long with the speculum. After the procedure I was so close to fainting from the heat in the room and the combo of nerves. Moral of the story is I got through it, power outage and all. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be.
Hi girls,
I had a Colposcopy/Biopsy done last Monday, 4 days ago, on 29th June 2009. I hadn’t really thought much about it – both my sister and my best friend have had these procedures followed by LLETZ etc in the past….anyways, the gynae doc didn’t tell me how many biospsys he did, he didn’t tell me what he saw either, he just said if it’s 1 thing, I’ll be called back for another colposcopy in 6 months and if it’s another, he’ll talk to me about the next step. The colposcopy itself didn’t bother me, just like a PAP. I found the lotion stinged alot before the biopsy(like when ur eyes sting from chopping onions, but it’s not your eyes, and there’s no onions) and the “snipping” during the biopsy sort of hurt a little bit too. It wasn’t “painful” or unbearable though ladies, so don’t worry too much. I was told to expect results in 2 weeks and I cannot wait to see what they have/have not discovered. Since Monday I have had no bleeding whatsoever, I had a very very slight brownish discharge (hardly noticeable) for 24 hours after the procedure and I have severe lower-back pain since. I also feel absolutely exhausted and generally “unwell” and I’m having slight yellowish discharge now. I can also FEEL discomfort at the site where the biopsy was taken inside me, it’s constantly feeling a little sore and stingy. I’m keeping a close eye on my temperature because I’m so scared of infection, but my doctors office reassured me that lower-back pain can be normal and it’s nothing to worry about *phew* Roll on results day……best of luck all you ladies, hope we all get the results we are hoping for….at the end of the day, we’d all be far worse off if we were ladies who didn’t bother getting paps done, think of it that way
(During the colposcopy, I just kept reminding myself of labour/birth/stitches after third degree tear that I went through a few years ago – nothing could be as bad as that!!)
I had a colposcopy done last Monday on June 29th. The procedure was not painful, so no need to worry ladies. It felt like a normal papsmear. The only difference was when they were taking the samples for the biopsy. What I felt was pressure and a little pinching. And I’m a person that can’t take pain at all! So for me to say this wasn’t painful, it really isn’t. It’s just a little uncomfortable.
After it was done, she gave me a pad, because she said I would bleed. I bled more the first day and had cramping. But the next day, the cramps were gone and I was spotting blood for about a week.
I got my results after a week. My doctor called me yesterday and told me the results which was good news. She said as long as youre healthy, most of the time our bodies kill off the bad cells. So just stay healthy and you wont have much to worry about.
To Cory:
Maybe your itchyness and bumps are the result from using a pad? Because I usually use tampons, but after a colpscopy you can’t put anything inside your vagina so we have to use pads. Sometimes I get an allergic reaction to pads too, just because it rubs against the skin and its moist.
I had my second colpscopy today. I definitely think this second one was more uncomfortable. I only had one “pinch” my first time and four this time. I had cramping and stinging during the process and I admit tears. The cramps have let up by the evening but it stings terribly to urinate. The discharge that everyone mentioned is unpleasant but not as bad as the stinging. I know it won’t last long but gosh- I’m not looking forward to these.
Some of these comments would make anyone panic. I am one of the worse worriers you would ever meet – i stress about everything so when i had to ge a colposcopy done this week (i am 23) i near gave myself a heart attack. But the only thing i didn’t like was the solution that stung but i had to get some biopsies taken and was told to could each time and i didn’t feel a thing – and i didn’t have any numbing solutions or anything. I’ve been more uncomfortable and sore since it but was told that is very normal. I had to done 3 days ago and am a little senstive and still have a bit of spot bleeding but that is it. The day after i too couldn’t sit, lie or stand without bein uncomfortable. I also had some period pain type cramps and am very tired. I am glad to see some people had the coffee bean type clumps when going to the toilet as i too had this. I am going to ring my doctor just to put my mind at rest and i’m not thinking about the results. I think i’ve worried enough when it was not necessary so i’m not going to do it again.
Good luck everyone, but don’t panic the procedure does not hurt – especially if you stay calm
I had my colposcopy done two years ago and it was the worst most intense pain I’ve ever felt. during the procedure it was very uncomfortable and I was dizzy after. I had to lay on the table for 10 minutes. When I got home was when the pain intensified for me. Throughout the night it continued to intensify to the point where I was no longer able to stand up because when I did I felt sharp stabs. My mother had to finally call a doctor and they told me that my experience happens to a small number of people. I can’t remember what they told me to do next time but I am scheduled for another one next month! I’m a nervous wreck and just the thought of dealing with that pain makes me feel sick. ! Has anyone else gone through this?
I had mine 22/7/09. It wasnt as painful as expected. Im 21. I had a punch biopsy which stung a bit but was over in seconds. Iv had a few bits of light brown discharge blobs but no bleeding. The only thing i hav got is really sore boobs!any1 had this?x
I just had a coloscopy and biopsy done this past Thursday 7/23/09. I was searching for answers to determine whether or not I have an infection due to the procedure. I read all the comments and they put me a little at ease. I too have the “coffee ground” discharge accomponied by the flesh like greenish tissue clumps. A few hours ago I was also experiencing cramping but I took some advil and the cramps have gone away. I was bleeding a little yesterday but today it went back to the discharge. I have noticed these past few days that my boobs are sore as well. I have to go back to my doctor 8/12/09 to find out my results.
I just want to thank everyone that has shared their experience on this matter because I realize I’m not alone and knowing this makes me feel a lot better.
Lstar, im glad u hav the sore boobs, thought it was a bit odd but suppose its hormomal! I hav also been really itchy down there, that normal? They said i wil get my results in 6-8 weeks via post, is this the usual proceedure in s.wales?
My doctor said it usually takes 3 weeks. I also researched & I found that it can take up to a month depending on where u live. I’m not experiencing the itching tho… sorry I can’t help more w/ that but I read some older posts & those women said they were having the itching. One woman even suggested that it may be irritation due to the maxi pads. Call your doctor & ask. Let me know what happens.
Hi, I just had one and the day after I got severe itching and redness. This has been going on a week. I called my doctor and she said take Monistat but I don’t think it’s a yeast infection. Has anyone with the itching found out what it is? Thanks!
Hi, I had a colposcopy a week ago and the day after severe itching started. This has been going on for a week now. Called the doctor and she said take Monistat but I don’t think it is a yeast infection. Has anyone that had the itching figured out what it is and how long does it last? Thanks!
Hi, my itching lasted about a week. No idea what it was though
I had a colposcopy this morning. They took two biopsies and did some other thing to gather more information about what is going on with the abnormal cells I have. The procedure itself was not too bad. It was a little uncomfortable, so just try to relax as much as possible while you’re having the procedure. They told me to take deep breathes, but then I started to feel a little light-headed. I would ask them to tell you when they are going to take a biopsy and then try to cough while they do it. Otherwise you can hear and feel the snipping. If I have another one of these – I’m definitely going to try coughing during the biopsies. They mentioned no intercourse, strenuous activity and no tampons for about 3-4 days after the procedure. They also mentioned that the discharge could last up to two weeks and if I still have it after that or if it is malodorous (bad-smelling) I should call the doctor.
I’m experiencing a mild amount of pain and cramping right now (about 4 hrs after procedure). It is also mildly itchy with some burning near the entrance to my vagina. It also stings a little when I pee. It seems this is all normal stuff that happens afterward. I had a couple of yeast infections before I had the colposcopy so my doctor mentioned that I should purchase a Monistat kit since I’m going on vacation and might want to have it just in case I get another infection. So I’m assuming the procedure can cause yeast infections. If I remember I’ll come back and post a follow-up cause it might be helpful to hear how I’ve recovered. I should have results by next week and then we’ll see how to proceed. Hopefully everything will be ok. Sending much love to all of you!! Hang in there and the procedure will be over with before you know it!!
Hi ladies-
I need your help. I had a colposcopy on Thursday morning. The procedure was not at all painful. I didn’t have any bleeding until last night which was very faint. I was never told I couldn’t have sex after the procedure. My husband and I had sex this morning and after sex had quite a bit of bleeding. I am suppose to get my period within the next few days, but I am hoping not to as we are trying to get pregnant! Do you think the bleeding is from the colposcopy or am I just getting my period early?
It could be either, not a gd idea to try 4 a baby until you have the all clear. If u need treatment they cant do it if your pregnant x
I had a colpo done on Friday. My doctor wanted to do one because I’m pregnant and my pap smear tests have come back normal but with the presance of HPV. He just wanted to take a closer look at my cervix since I have had issues before in the past and to make sure nothing was being missed.
So anyway, had it done on friday and luckily everything looked fine so no biopsy had to be taken. My problem is now I’m feeling itchy down there and I also have a creamy discharge. This all started on Saturday (1 day after) the colpo. I’m not sure why I’m itchy but I was thinking maybe it’s a reactiion to the vinegar solution. I don’t know…any other ideas?
i have to wait 6 weeks!!!!!!!!! i think that is just ridiculous. mine was OK until after the biopsy when they froze my cervix. it was one of the most uncomfortable things i have ever ever ever had to go through. i now have the coffee granule discharge. im just going to take it steady so i can recover quickly. i definitely wont be having sex for a month and using tampons, not worth the risk of infection. hope every ones is in the all clear!
Wow reading these helped put my mind at ease!! I had mine done 8/18/09 tuesday and right after I had mild cramps, a few sharp pains but nothing really painful. Your not supposed to have sex or use tampons for two weeks. I took the day off from work and took a 3 hour nap and felt a bit better. When I woke up I was really itchy but it went away by the morning. Im not sure if it was blood or not but I did have orangeish brownish discharge (dye) which is normal. It did sting the first couple of times I peed but I dont feel a thing now. Today is Friday 3 days after. The only thing Im still experiencing is the tissue or scab like skin when I pee sometimes. Im glad to hear I wasnt the only one
I get my results on the 31st.
I had a colposcopy done four days ago. I was pretty nervous, because of some comments I had read online. They scared me and I hardly slept. First thing I must say, is thank God we have such technology available. I think of the thousands of women in third world countries who would give almost anything to have their health and life saved from such a procedure, but it is sadly not even an option for them. We are extremely fortunate!!! Seriously, it saves lives.
When I went the staff was exceptionally supportive and gentle and explained everything to me. The speculum was inserted gently and I felt some pressure. They told me to relax, because it would actually allow the process to go much smoother for me. I was determined to just breath and and let go as much as I could. The solution and iodine felt like cool water and then the doctor determined that I should have a biopsy. One was taken from my cervix and another from my uterus(due to my last heavy period that lasted for six weeks). I was asked to cough and felt a nip of pain for an instant, which mostly just startled me. Then a paste was put on to stop any bleeding and heal the spots where the biopsies were taken from. I was fine with that and actually found it comforting to know that that was being done. They spoke to me step by step through the process and I was relieved when I knew the procedure was finished and the speculum would be removed. It didn’t hurt, but of course created some pressure. Remember it is for your health and bravo to the doctor who sends you for the test. I had problems for years and my former doctor dismissed my complaints, thankfully my new doctor would rather check things out than to let things go. I did feel some slight cramping when they were checking my uterus, which they told me would happen. Afterward I was told to rest for five minutes before getting up. When I did I felt fine. I bought myself a treat before leaving the hospital- I think it’s good to do something nice for yourself after you pass through something that had initially scared you. I later had a discharge which was black and at times like coffee grounds- all normal as the paste is released. I felt a little crampy for a day and a half. I will wait for the biopsy results, but I am also scheduled for a LEEP procedure to remove of the abnormal cells. I am a highly sensitive person and I was able to go though it. They offered to let me see the procedure on the large monitor, but for me, I decided to just focus on the ceiling and placed my hands on my upper chest- it is known to calm you. It may seem longer than it really is, if you are having it done for the first time, but it only takes 10 minutes or less. If you don’t need a biopsy then it should only take about five minutes. For me it took a half hour to go through the explanation, get undressed, go though the procedure and then rest for five minutes.
If you need to have it done, don’t put it off- just do it, it’s worth it and so are YOU!
I had a Colposcopy done 11 days ago and I am still bleeding from it. I went to the doctor 3 days ago so that she could stop the bleeding. She put that paste in me again, and I’m still bleeding. I’m not on my period, as I’m on the pill. I’m just worried something else might be wrong? I would call the doctor, but tomorrow is Labor day….any help would be appreciated. Not sure if I should go to the ER or not.
I am going for a colposcope in 2 days time, and i feel very anxious about it, as some people find it a terrible thing, others not. I wish this was all over and done with.
This is my second Colposcopy and I also had the LEEP procedure 6 months ago. I had it done yesterday and experienced quite a bit of discomfort during the procedure. Afterwards, there was cramping and at times small sharp pains throughout the day. I took tylenol every six hours and felt quite tired afterwards. Discharge and bleeding is normal.
One piece of advice, if you think there you are experiencing something that does not feel right – call your doctor immediately. You know your body and go with your gut feeling. Secondly, worrying does not make the procedure less uncomfortable or the results come in faster. From experience (lump removed from my breast and waited 9 weeks for the results) and last time waited 2 weeks for my colposcopy results, which were both fine. Keep busy, talk to friends about your worries but maintain a positive attitude. You are strong and you can deal with whatever comes your way. It is not easy but you will be O.k.
Had my biopsy results which confirmed abnormal cells. Not cancer. I have to have a LLETZ procedure though. What does this involve?
I had a colposcopy and a punch biopsy a few years ago and found it quite painful, afterwards I had an horrendous infection that made me not want to go out ..it was so smelly ugh, had to have a course of metronidazole which cleared it up
Hi Ladies! A while back I got my results back from my last pap back in May, which showed abnormal cells and positive for HPV! Oh no, couldn’t happen to me, right? I think that was the worst was not truly knowing what either of those meant and feeling like I was “diseased” or something. Had a big mix up with a clinic about being on an apparently “phantom” waiting list for a colpo for 3 months! Finally just got in to a different clinic, Planned Parenthood actually, and had my colpo/biopsy Thursday.
Treated myself to lunch with my friend who came with me for moral support so that was fun. Took a nap later since i was pretty tired, not everyday you get this done so get some rest! Only real downer for me now is can’t go swimming and can’t do regular gym activities for a bit. Oh well, could be a whole lot worse! HPV is my fear now, but we’ll find out in 2 weeks what level/variety it is, as well as confirm the cause of any other abnormality and we’ll go from there! Don’t worry ladies, its just one of those things that has got to get done, and this too shall pass!! May God bless you and ease your nerves and anxiety, I know I prayed for that and He blessed me with dr/nurses with great senses of humor! Just what I needed!!! Take care, stay strong!
Anxiety is normal, just like having issues at some point in your life “down under” is normal! First off remind yourself that early detection and being safe rather than sorry is best! Planned Parenthood actually turned out to be a better choice than through my insurance too (almost $500 cheaper!!) So shop around too! I was fortunate (if thats the right word)to have a friend who had the same procedure and the same insurance plan as I do and she gave me that heads up! She learned the hard way.
The procedure itself was not as bad as I had expected, but i felt like i prepared myself for it to be bad because my friend had a rough experience. I think its really different for everybody. PP staff was really helpful and explained the procedure so I felt like I was in the loop. The dr was super nice and explained everything and was open to any questions. I think what helped me was just reminding myself that they do this all the time, and as long as I do my part (lay back, try to relax and communicate with them how I was feeling) it will allow them to do their part successfully!
For me (again, it may be different for you) the speculum was the worst part. It was larger than a pap one because they need to make sure they can see in there with their special vajay jay goggles! They told me step by step what was going to happen and what everything meant. There was even someone in training there (who I allowed to be present and learn from the experience) who got to take a look at her first colpo and she just exclaimed, “OH COOOOOL!” That made me laugh which I was not expecting to do! I just said, “why, thank you…?” and we all chuckled. It really eased my nerves talking with them. We did the cough method which feel free to make it a nice loud raspy cough to make sure you don’t feel/hear anything, they have the section they want to take clamped off and ready to go so you won’t dislodge anything (obviously don’t convulse while coughing though!). The second to worst part was doing the cervical scraper thingy which just felt really weird. Whole thing for me took max including changing, talking etc. was 30 mins. It can take up to 15 mins for white spots to show, which my doctor also explained that sometimes the “abnormalities” can be when two types of lining (bear with my butchering of her description) over lap and cause like sort of a blocked pore, and just causes irritation and can cause blood vessels to make the area red, etc. All that to say, there are really tons of things that cause abnormalities in your pap results, don’t get too paranoid. (HPV sounds super scary still tho!)
I would recommend for your procedure, ask if you can get some ibuprofen before hand, and ask to get the numbing spray if they do a biopsy. I only had to have 2 biopsy’s done so perhaps that is why I only had fairly minor cramps and soreness the first day and a little bit today, day two and no bleeding! I was told about the coffee grounds, which so far this must be some weak coffee because its a light brown discharge and very small clumps with some brown specs too. No pain urinating, no itching (perhaps like someone else said earlier, the itching if you have it could be from pads. I am used to wearing pads/pantie liners). Have yet to experience the fleshy scab, but now can look forward to that thanks to some previous posts
Hello. I am 56 years old and just recently tested positive for HPV, the cervical cancer causing strains specifically, 16 and 18. Not much info or research has been done for post menopausal women, but my gynecologist did a colposcopy just to make sure. I feel alone, stupid and tainted. My results will come back on the 30th of Sept. I have the brownish discharge. Ironically, I also just met a new man and we are very compatible but won’t have sex for a few weeks, even if I wanted to. I hate this. Anybody else feel this way?
i went for a colposcopy and the consultant could’nt carry out the procedure as it was to complicated, so i had to go to hospital and be put out im now waiting for the results which is an anxious time for anyone! Does anyone know roughly how long the results take to come back good or bad? Best wishes xx
Had a colp today Sept 27, 2009. Pap results came back abnormal, was sent to a specialist. Had to get a biopsy and an HPV test. A girlfriend of mine had just gone through it and said it wasn’t terrible, just a bit more uncomfortable than a pap and a little bit longer. I went in feeling good about the whole thing. The vinegar stung a little, but it was nothing too bad. The doctor explained everything that he was doing as he was doing it, and I even grabbed my book to read during the procedure.
Boy… I’m glad I grabbed the book. He counted down 1…2…3 before he took the sample and I was stung by the most intense pain I’ve ever encountered. As a reference, I play roller derby, and we get injured pretty regularly. I’ve been in some very bad pain, but that amount of pain has never hit me so quickly or strong. It literally took my breath away and I was gripping the book to my face for the duration of the procedure. Lucky for me he only needed to take one sample.
I did everything in my power to keep from clenching up so the procedure would be over sooner. I’m pretty embarrassed when I cry, so I was trying really hard not to, but I did. The doctor kept apologizing and told me that for a small group of people, there is an intense amount of pain.
EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS PART.
***For the majority of people, you will only experience minimum to mild discomfort, nothing more than a pap. BUT for a small number of people there are significantly more nerve endings near the cervix. I happened to be one of them. He told me that when I have children, unless I feel VERY STRONGLY about it, that natural childbirth is going to be terribly painful for me because of those extra nerve endings. I hurt so badly I couldn’t bear to drive home without crying every time my car hit a bump.
Now I wish I could tell you there is a way to determine if you will be one of the few that has extreme pain, but I don’t know. In comparison with my girlfriends, sex feels no different for me than it does for them, so I’ve never noticed any difference in sensation that would indicate one way or another.
I’d suggest taking a pain reliever no matter what.
Good luck and don’t let this scare you, only inform you.
Im having my 3rd colposcopy and im sure they will do more biopsies, the first time i had it done, i was in so much pain that afterwards i passed out, couldnt hear or see anything. The most pain ive ever gone through, the second time i didnt pass out but again extremly painful, i am wondering if anyone knows if they can do this at a hospital and put you out and then do it! Any suggestions ladies?
I had my procedure done Thursday Sept 24, 2009 and only had minor cramping and brown discharge. Then on Sunday I started getting severe cramping and more reddish/brown blood. Today is Sept 29, 2009 and I am still in minor pain and I have a high pain threshold. The severe pain was after I had an orgasm on Sunday, (NO SEX) just oral and then I down and out all day on Sunday. I am very nervous to hear the results from my GYNO. Wish me luck as I do for all of you. Cheers!

Today i’m going to have my colposcopy and i’m really
scared my first time,as i read all notes it helps me a lot
but everyone is different for some less pain but for me
i don’t know yet probably i will request to give me some
drugs or put me to sleep.
I had my colposcopy and biopsy done two days ago and I just want to reassure all those worriers out there like me. I really did not know going in what exactly they were going to do but my gyno explained it every step of the way. Normally I pass out from getting so tense about medical procedures but I was able to make it through this one with a slight bit of pain. Yes, the discharge is nasty but my gyno told me it would be so I’m not freaking out. I was only sore a little bit that day and night. I never realized this was that common and just want to tell other women that it doesn’t have to be that bad.
Hey Ladies,
I’m glad I found this resource, it’s nice to know you’re not alone. I am one of those people who likes to know as much as possible about what to expect so I find it comforting, for those who get anxious reading these posts – I would just say, take everything with a grain of salt, for most people (as OP mentioned) it’s not going to be too painful and some pain killers will help.
My gyne told me to expect the “weirdest discharge of your life” after the procedure – she didn’t really mention that my vagina would feel kind of dry and numb! But I am fairly certain it is due to the chemical cautery solution (Monsel’s it’s mustard yellow-brownish) that causes a sort of scab to form on the vagina. At this point that is the only thing that is bothering me – I don’t think I could have sex even if I wanted to right now…hoping I can before my husband leaves for 6 weeks (in another couple weeks!). My gyne never cautioned against going to the gym though, it’s the day after mine and I plan to go.
Also, the LLETZ (aka LEEP) procedure is nothing to be too worried about, it’s just a little loop that slices a layer of your cervix off (you will need this if the biopsy confirms severe dysplasia). Again, you don’t need to be sedated, they will put local freezing into your cervix. (I guess if you’re super freaked out you could be).
Try to relax and make sure you ask lots of questions! It’s great to know I’m not alone – and good for all of us for taking care of ourselves and getting paps done.
Hello,
I have had two colpos in the last 2 years, my second 10/13/09. The first was not to bad just mild cramping. The second the doctor had a hard time stopping the bleeding after taking a biopsy and the pain was unbearable she sent me home with Vicodin for the pain.
My doctor called me with my results yesterday, the changes in my cells were severe, and she has recommended the LEEP Procedure.
Now I am anxious of this procedure, as I am only 25.
Getting my first colposcopy Nov. 10 after an abnormal pap result and high risk hpv. I am most concerned about waiting for the results. I expect the worst..and I’m only 25. Some of you have posted your results, but some hadn’t gotten them yet at time of posting. I’m curious how everyone is doing.
I had a colposcopy and procedure done on the 29.09…
Im gonna share this because i tried to find information about what to expect as I dont think you are given enough information.
I was told to expect a yellowish discharge for a few days, this lasted about three and a half weeks…
The second day i bled very heavily and continued for a week, this also coincided with my first period although it was obvious that this was much heavier and dare i say lumps of sloughed skin…:(
The procedure itself wasnt painful and i had a lump removed from my cervix at the same time as the cervix layer being removed, both for biopsy. The most uncomfortable thing was having your legs in styrups and of course the dignity factor….
…
That said, I had to wait four weeks for my results.
To anyone reading this, its over and done with pretty quickly and the majority of staff i am sure will be oozing with empathy and reassurance.
GOOD LUCK X
i will have my colpo tomorrow afternoon.im so worried & scared since this will be my first time. my doc said that i had an abnormal pap test which they call it low-grade..
what do you think the best way i will do so not to feel the pain?
im due my calposcopy today…..im on my period will this affect it??
Carrie: (since you are the most recent post)
You will need to call your doctor’s office to reschedule on a date when your period is ending or is done. If you’re GYNE, will clean you prior to the procedure.
Lynn: (I don’t know when you posted your comment, but hope this helps!)
I took Tylenol – acetemenophine. (asperin and ibuprofen will thin your blood) Take it 30 mins to an hour prior to your appointment.
04 NOV 09 :: With having several papsmears done in less than a year, paps seem to be done and over with in a matter of seconds. BUT the anxiety built up for a colposcopy was no help. Prepping myself (as all of you have been likely doing also) by researching online of what the procedure is, what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and what follows next… it helps to know what you’re stepping into. (And yet I feel, at times, ignorance is bliss… only because I end up worrying and build up the anxiety of what’s to come.) So, here’s my feedback on the colposcopy and biopsy performed yesterday, 03 NOV 09.
My GYNE was absolutely vocal about what was occuring with regard to cleaning, applying medication, scraping, then… the biopsy. I truly had to focus on one object to keep myself distracted. Ok, the scraping… not so bad, it’s just like the paps. The biopsy… it was slightly painful – I felt my knees weaken. I believe I was prepped well prior to leaving the office (medicated and with a pad), but soon after walking out of the office… I had to give myself a moment to sick down and gather myself. I felt very light-headed (perhaps due to the bleeding and the fact that it was lunch time). Perhaps having a light meal/snack before/after the procedure would help. (Just like when donating blood.) I experienced some discomforting in sitting yesterday, but that subsided after a few hours. I cramped throughout the evening and had minimal bleeding visible on the pad; however, am concluding that perhaps the cramping was from the blood clotting. This morning, as a showered, I found a lot of dry blood (?) or the medicated solution (?). It was crusty – I wasn’t expecting that… and I haven’t read any previous posts about it. I can still feel that I am bleeding, but not heavily. I will be waiting a week for my results – I’ll keep in touch.
I hope this helps.
feeling more relieved… i read a few more of the previous posts and read about the “coffee grounds & clumps”… yes, that was this morning (like the other ladies, it freaked me out, too!)
Regarding my comment dated October 13.
Finally i had my colposcopy done Nov 3 and it last only
about ten minutes,it hurts only when the Doctor put some painkiller inside. I had some bleeding and pain around my hips its like when you have your first day
period that’s all i feel.
Hey, ladies!
I had my colposcopy and biopsy done 2 1/2 days ago. It was my second procedure. My first was at 17 years old, and I am now 20. I worried a bit more about this most recent one than I did when I was younger, as I consider all the possibilities of my results now that I’m older. Anyway, it is nothing to fret over. I took three Tylenol an hour before the procedure and gritted my teeth the whole way through. The best thing to do is try to relax and breathe and talk with your gyno and the assistant about something irrelevant. I asked about a chair that was sitting next to me that apparently you sit and pee on (like a toilet but “chair-ish”) so as to catch the pee in a cup underneath. This resulted in funny stories, which somewhat eased me through it. The pain was tolerable, if you even want to call it pain. It’s more like a pap smear, but it lasts a little longer with some pinching here and there.
On the same day, after the procedure, I experienced some discomfort as if I was on my period. I felt a little depressed, too, of course, because I was worrying about the results. I also had some dark brown, almost black, specks of discharge. The pad they gave me made me itch, too. The next day, though, I felt completely normal with very little discharge and no itching because I didn’t need to wear a pad.
Today (2 1/2) days later, I experienced something that I thought was odd, but it turned out pretty common. I was using the bathroom and felt something in me, like a tampon would feel when it was falling out. If you really don’t want to be grossed out, stop reading because I’m going into detail, which I think is helpful to others who are looking for the info I was looking for. Anyways… I tried pshing it out, but it was too big. I ended up having to pull this 3 inch by 1 inch piece of tissue out of me. It was dark brown in color, flat, and ridged. It looked like a piece of bubble gum would if you chewed it up and flattened it out on the roof of your mouth. I believe it was the clotting/numbing agent they applied after my biopsy. I thought it was really weird, but don’t think you’re a freak if it happens to you. It’s normal, and it’s happened to lots of other girls who all thought they were freaks for passing this thing, too!
I just had my first colposcopy Monday. I prepared myself all week and wasn’t the slightest bit afraid to begin. I was expecting discomfort and slight pain but this was HORRIBLE! I am really good when it comes to pain ( I laughed through all my tats and had a really easy labor/delivery and didn’t even notice when i tore). But those were nothing in comparison. I know my cervix is a little hard to find because it isn’t centered and I told him where to find it. I don’t know what he was using but I bit my lips and couldnt help the tears streaming down my face. I ended up screaming and they crying so hard through the whole thing he had to use a smaller tool.. Does anyone know why it could have been this painful? I even cried though my pap a few weeks ago and she had tiny hands. They were both concerned with the amount of pain but neither would tell me why.
