Strange Feeling - Is It Menopause or Thyroid?

WOMEN'S HEALTH FORUM: Can anyone out there give me some advice as to this really strange feeling I've been having for the last couple of months. I'm 52, haven't had a period for two months and, apart from insomnia, haven't yet had to deal with any really bad problems sometimes associated with menopause. However, at night, when I finally do nod off (for what seems like 5 minutes) I awaken with what seems like an anxiety attack, the only difference is, there's no anxiety. I hope I can make sense of this, but it's a feeling of fight or flight but without the fear. A million butterflies are unleashed somewhere in my body but there is no fear attached to it. Has anyone else experienced this. I'm also hypothyroid, and although my levels all seem to be under control, think it might be related to my thyroid. This strange feeling can happen two or three times at night, not always after wakening from sleep. It also happens in the period when I'm trying to fall asleep. Hope someone out there can put my mind at rest. What do you think?

Yes feel at ease you are not alone in this feeling. Don’t mean to be discouraging but I am 71 and I still have the feeling of waking up scared and feel like my heart is racing but when I feel my pulse, it is norm. I am also having hot flashes, but they are getting some better.Myi doc want to put me on harmones but I refuse to take them. My friends doc told her to just tough it out, that anything you do just prolongs the process of menopause. I too take thyroid meds and have for 50 years. I think your feelings are normal, but it is hard to explain to a doctor how you feel when you have one of these attacks…….

Thank you. I have been having this happen to
me ever since I had my hysterectomy. I wanted
to explain it to the doctor, but I wasn’t sure
how to discribe it. Your wording was perfect,
now I just hope she will be able to help me
understand why it is happening.
