Abnormal Bleeding After Tubal Ligation

By July 6, 2003

Follow me on:

WOMEN'S HEALTH FORUM: I am interested in talking with others who have or are experiencing post-tubal complications. Namely very heavy and irregular periods. Mine started directly after my tubal, which was performed the day after the birth of my daughter. I have talked to a few women in my town who have had similar experiences and am curious to find out how common this is. Also any treatments that have relieved symptoms. All replies are apprieciated. Have you experienced abnormal bleeding after tubal ligation?

(1) knits4fun says:

I have. I had mine on March 30, 2006 after my daughter was born by cesarean (during that operation). Two weeks later, I had a ‘gush’ and bled and bled and bled. I’m now on Lupron to stop it and after this shot (my second) will see how my periods return. If they’re not normal, I may have to have a hysterectomy. I just can’t live with the heavy bleeding.

(3) Jennifer McManus says:

i had a t.l. in march ’06 and have had periods that last for 2 1/2 weeks or longer. they are extremely heavy and i have a lot of pain on both sides of my abdomen all the time. my doctor keeps telling me that it’s just because i recently had a baby and the t.l. and my body is trying to recover. my daughter was born in february and i had to wait until 6 weeks post partum to have the surgery.

(4) Amber Beamon says:

I had a tubal ligation on June 30 2006. After having 3 children by age 19 I knew in my heart that I just didn’t want anymore,so I opted for a tubal. Thinking my monthly cycles would remain the same (ya know 4 days, minimal pain)yeah right! Anyway my very first period after the procedure was abnormally long, and extremely painful. I am on my second post surgery period now and just last night woke up with severe pain in my left side almost like labor pains. So here I am sitting on the toilet crying like a baby contemplating wether or not to go to the E.R. Knowing the whole time that even if I do go they will call in the same doctor that done my surgery, and he will just say that it is probably a small cyst on my ovary and that if my pain doesn’t subside in a few days to come in to the office and they’ll check it out. Anyway I’m not supposed to be writing a story here just a comment, so to make a long story short I wish that I would never have had this surgery done. And I will be sure to tell any woman that I hear of considering having this surgery about this comment site and my personal story of pain and misery. P.S. It had been a year since I’d given birth to my daughter, and I’d never had problems with my actual period before, so the doctors really don’t have an excuse worthy of my acceptance other than not fully informing me of all risks and benefits beforehand.

(5) Starra says:

Most of the heavy bleeding is a result of coming off synthetic hormone birth control. There is nothing in the function of a tubal ligation that would cause heavy menstrual bleeding, because nothing is removed other than other forms of birth control.

(6) Jennifer says:

I had a tl in 2003 after a csection. I was not on any form of birth control for about 6 years outside of natural family planning prior. I disagree with Starra for that simple fact. My periods have lasted 7 days with heavy bleeding since my tl. I used to have scant periods lasting 2/3 days. I have had cramps so bad I can’t stand it. I never had cramps before. My doctor did tell me that the most common complaint she heard was about extreme cramping during periods after a tl. I would imagine that it would take a year or so of irregular periods for them to regulate back to what they should have been normally. But mine are getting worse as time goes by. It has been almost 3 years for me. Do some more research with your doctor and on the internet. Sometimes these are signs of other issues. If women don’t complain to their doctors about issues they just don’t know and can’t learn. We can’t think of our physicians as gods. They can’t see all and know all. They are highly trained, but there is still a limit to their knowledge. Research and studies are done everday. Please don’t accuse your physician of deliberatly not telling you this. I truly believe they aren’t fully aware of this issue, yet.

i had my tl. several monthes ago, and i have had the worst cramps i’ve ever had since then. i’ve also been spotting a little. i was actually trying to find some info on this subject, because my dr. failed to mention these side effects. last nite the cramps got so bad it woke me from a dead sleep. i’ve never had pain like that from my periods. it felt like labor pains. my youngest is 2 yrs old and i haven’t been on any birth control. only condoms.

(8) stephanie says:

I had a tubal in nov. of 2005 during the delivery of my son (csection). since i got my first period (about 5 months post partum) they have been abnormally heavy and extremely painful. normaly i would bleed 4 days with minimal pain. now it is from 7-9 days with extreme pain . last month i had to call my ob/gyn for pain pills. and to ask if passing a clot about the size of a silver dollar is normal. i always pass clots now and they are either HUGE- so big as i can feel them coming out, or small clots in big clusters. (sorry this may be TMI) i addressed my concerns about this to my doctor before i had the tubal. i did my research online. he assured me that all this info was purely coincidental, and not to worry. i have talked to several women in person and online about this problem. most are looking into or hoping for a hysterectomy. i was told after last months incodents to track my pain, and bleeding for a couple months and get back to the doctor. i am using a websight online to help me track them now. good luck to any with this problem. if i had to do it over again i would not have had the tubal.

Hello ladies, I just had a dermoid cyst removed and while my physician was in she also did a TL on August 30, 2006. This scares me because I have these sharp shooting pains. I had just come off my menstral right before the procedure but I will keep you guys posted as to see what happens during my next cycle.

I just had my TL August 18, 2006. I had my first normal period on Sunday, Sept. 3rd. It is now Friday, Sept. 15 and I’m still bleeding. I just called my doctor. The nurse for her said that I may have longer periods for about the first two months. To me I had a normal period (flow) the first 6 days now it’s just spots or more at times. I think there must be some type of infection or something’s not healing, but then again my body is probably devastated that I did this to it.

(12) Angel D. says:

I had a TI in January 2006 and am experiencing terrible cramps and heavy unnormal bleeding. Before the TI I never had cramps during, before, or after my period, oh I do know! I used to bleed for like 5-6 days heavy the first 2 days and mild to light the remaining days; now I bleed for 7-9 days very heavy the first 5 or so days and then heavy to mild flow the reamianing. I also experience terrible cramps before, during, and after my period now, they almost keep me from performing every day activities. I also spot almost every day, this sucks!

(13) Mal says:

I made a comment on Sept. 3, 2006 today is Sept. 27, 2006 and I’m still bleeding. There was a day when it stopped, but it started up again the following afternoon. The flow is heavy and painful. The other day I had something other than a blood clot come out. I’m sure of it. I looked to be like muscle or tissue. I haven’t even thought of calling my doctor back yet. I’m really disappointed in them. I think the Dr. should have returned my call after talking with the nurse. I’ll be back in a few to tell you where I am on this and if the bleeding has stopped. I’m getting tired of this and it’s making me depressed.

Ladies, thank you so much for sharing your comments! I am 37 weeks pregnant and was planning on getting the tl done immediately after giving birth. Well, after reading all this, (My doctor never mentioned ANY of this and I did ask him about side effects!),I’m telling my husband to get fixed instead! Best of luck and thank you again!

I had my TL in March of ’05. I have not had the pains but my period is never at the same time. I will have it at the begining of one month and the middle of the next. Has anyone else had any problems similar to this at all?

(16) Liz says:

I had my TB after the birth of my 4th child in 1999. To say that I regret that is an understatement. My cycles are willy-nilly, heavy or light, with or without pain, short or long. Now I am highly emotional, easily upset.

I will never believe that all these issues are not related to my TL. My problem is I was not assertive something was wrong in the first few years so I went around thinking I was crazy.

Not real sure what to do, can’t afford a TLR, and not sure if the symptoms would be reversed if I did.

I just want to get a hold of any woman considering TL and tell them to investigate the truth.

(17) Terry says:

Wow, i just left my gyn office for a TL consult. I’m 37 with 2 kids and thought i would have the perfect plan for not ever getting pregnant again. Now, i’m really second guessing this decision. i may have to wait a little longer. The idea of having long and painful periods is enough for me to back out of this. I’m glad there are websites like this, it really helped me out. Thanks ladies.

(18) Verdalia Brown says:

I received a TL on October 12, 2006 right after a birth by c-section. I am still bleeding. Some days I am spotting and some days it is full blown menstrual bleeding with cramps. Right now it is hurting me to walk. I wonder am I feeling this way because I didn’t rest after the surgery. This was my third child and on the other births my bleeding stopped one week after delivery (due to breastfeeding). This postnatal experience is different. I wish the bleeding would stop. I discussed the possibility of irregular periods with my doctor and he said to let my body adjust for just a little longer. This is not the way it is supposed to be. I wish my husband would have gotten a vasectomy instead of us both suffering after my TL.

November 21, 2006 at 7:00 pm
(19) Lisa says:

I had heavy menstrual bleeding and clotting prior to my tubal ligation, and I had heavy menstrual bleeding and clotting after it. The only things that ever got my periods under control were: being so hyperactively athletic that I got my body fat under 15% (THAT gave me “normal” periods); and later in life–triple-dose Depo-Provera injections (that stopped my periods altogether).

Since I’d had heavy periods under any/all other circumstances since my first period at 13, I can’t blame that on my tubal ligation. I can’t blame it on hormonal changes, either, since going on the pill didn’t lighten or stop my periods at all.

I’m pretty angry at my mother for telling me that heavy periods like I endured were “normal”. I think she was punishing me for lord only knows what. Even her periods weren’t as heavy as mine. Her Kotex packs lasted her two or three months, where mine lasted only one period and that only with the help of tampons.

(20) Amy says:

I had a t.l. almost 8 months ago during a c-section w/my fourth child. I haven’t had any of the problems you guys are mentioning, but I now have symptoms of pregnancy like fatigue, nausea, headaches and a very light period for the last 2 days. I am worried it might be a tubal pregnancy or even a full pregnancy. Has anyone had experiences like this or know someone who has? I wish all of you luck! I can’t imagine going through the pain/bad periods you are experiencing.

(21) Holly says:

My tl was done right after the cesarean delivery of my third child just 10 months ago. I didn’t have any bleeding (other than the norm after delivery for a few weeks) due to breastfeeding. My daughter has been completely weaned from the breast for one month now and my period promptly started a week after she last nursed. May-be it’ll take a few months to be regulated on my normal cycle, but I noticed very heavy bleeding for the first 4-5 days (compared to my norm of heavy the first 2 days) and I spotted today – it’s only been 2 weeks since the last day of my period… That’s not normal for me. The only times I’ve had issues of spotting was once while on b/c (I only took it for may-be 4 months ever in my life) and a couple times while I was pregnant. So I’ll have to wait a couple more cycles to see what comes of this. Prayers to you all that you will find relief from this pain & inconvenience soon! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

(22) Beth says:

I had a tubal after my c-section on October 27, 2006 and I am still bleeding 5 1/2 weeks later. My Dr’s office had me come in early for my post-partum check up and blamed the bleeding on me doing too much. (which very well could be the case since I have a 23 month old son at home too!)
However, I am wondering when will this stop, I am exclusively nursing, and after the birth of my first son, c-section, I bled for one week. Luckly, I am not in pain.

(23) Stacia says:

I had my tl done on 7/15/99, I didn’t have a period for 18 months after this, but I did have terrible stabbing pains that would not allow me to walk while I was ovulating. Once my periods finally started the cramps kill me, heavy clotty bleeding, that lasts almost a week. I also have terrible migraines that I have to take medicine for or end up in the hospital. I have gone from a size 6 to a size 12. I am now seeing my gyn because my periods are so irregular now, sometimes I spot or go 4 months with out a period. At first I thought maybe I was pregnant because I was soo tired all the time. My dr. tells me I need to think about a historectomy. I’m 31 and scared to death, I wish I never had this surgery and I think dr.s should tell you about these problems when you are thinking about having a tl done. I just hope word passes around for women who are considering this surgery, it’s a big mistake. Stay on birth control.

(24) Lisa says:

Now I’m getting scared. I’m 33, never had kids and my doctor finally said that she’d give me the green light to get my tubes tied. Perhaps I need to find another option. Have all of you already had children?

(25) April says:

I had a tubal on June 9, 2006 eight hours after the birth of my third child. I’ve just started menstruating again now. This will be my second cycle. I have horrible cramping and excessive heavy bleeding(pad and tampon every two hours type heavy). I had semi- normal periods before, but never this kind of bleeding. We’ll see what the next few cycles bring.

(26) Heidi says:

i had a tubal in 9/02 (9 months after the birth of my son) and haven’t had any major problems. i do have some pain during ovulation and my periods seem to be quite heavy for the first day and then end about 3 days later. i never had regular periods prior to the tubal but they seem to be quite regular now. i’m 37 have 2 children and am quite happy with the decision to have the tubal.

(27) Kimberly says:

had a tl in June 2006 after my fifth child c-section. Ever since bleeding has been extreme and spotting all the time. I also experienced depression, feelings of not being a whole woman, I lost my breast milk (had previously successfully breast fed for a year)and didn’t lose any of that weight I gained during pregnancy, I usually go down pretty close to my pre-pregnant size. I’m devastated I wish I would have never done it my husband and I are both suffering. I’m having a reversal done as soon as I lose enough weight.

(28) Danielle says:

I had a TL about 41/2 years ago after the birth of my twins. Before the TL i had regular periods you could set your watch by them. Now 4 years later im having the worse pain and heavy bleeding that several times I have thought that I was having a miscarriage. The pain at times is so awful that i want to scream. And dont think about having sex that hurts too and the doc says it is just because im ovulating. I think this is a bunch of crap, i have ovulated before (hince i got pregnant) and i have never felt the pain that i do now. $ years and i still have no answers. Im going to see a new doc next week and hopefully i can finally have some relief. I really dont want to have surgury again but if that is my only option then thats what ill do. If you are reading this to see about getting a TL done….DONT DO IT

(29) Jen says:

I had my 4th child 9/06. The day after she was born I had a tl. I have had 2 periods since my baby’s birth and they have been awful. I am cramping now, as I type, knowing that my third period is beginning. I was hoping it was just hormonal changes since I have just had a baby but after talking to friends, I found that they are experiencing heavy periods and cramps. I was on the pill before but have been off of the pill for several months before the births of my children. I had no problems at these times. I have been awaken by cramp pain in the middle of the night. My MD did not mention these side effects. The reserch I have done has showed the effects to be true 5-30% of the time. It seems to me as if the incidence is even higher from talking to friends. I am 32 and it is so frustrating that this is the experience that I have to have once a month for the next 20-30 years!

(30) Stephi says:

I had a tl on 5-24-05 with our 4th child after my 4th c-section. I nursed so my period did not start until a year after. After I had weaned him. My periods have always been regular, and like clockwork. Since having the tl they have lasted several days and then stop and then start again a few days later. I have now had this irregularity since July of 06. My doctor has put me on birth control to try and regulate the periods. I have had the blood work, the ultra sounds to rule out fibroids, etc. I am grateful to see these postings so I know I am not he only one. I have been scared out of my mind with what may be going on. I haven’t had the pain that many of you have stated, but I am exhausted and so irritable. Not a good combination when you have 4 kids under the age of 8! I do agree we need to push our doctors more. We can’t just sit back and accept all they tell us. We must be proactive. My best to all of you with this problem. May we all soon find some relief.

I really really wish i had found this site prior to having my tl. Although i didn’t find the information that i was looking for i did find information that i wasn’t aware of. I had my tl only five days ago and i am still bleeding. The only reason i even know that i was suppose to was the nurse in post op. handed me a pad. no explaination nothing just “here you can get dressed and go home now” nobody told that i was going to that it was normal or how long it was going to last.i have so many questions but at the time all i could think about was get me home.i would suggest to any woman thinking about this to get as much information as you can proir to getting a tl. make a clear informed choice. Good Luck to All.

(32) Wendy says:

I had my T.L. after the birth of my second daughter. Both of my pregnacys was normal. I decided to have a tubal done to prevent me from having any more children. Well shortly after the tubal I started to have abnormal bleeding. Not only do I have the abnormal bleeding but the pain is unbearable most of the time. I don’t want to call it a period, because it’s not a period! I bleed ALL the time, and also I pass clots that are huge. If I go more than three days and only spot, I feel like I’m in heaven. I don’t know what to do…I am very scared! Oh, all of this has been going on since 01-2001. What could be causing this, I am only 27 years old, and I know I shouldn’t be doing this so young. What options do I have?

March 29, 2007 at 5:18 pm
(33) Brandi says:

I really wish I would have read all of this before I had my TL LAST WEEK. I was concerned because I am having sharp pains still and trying to go to the bathroom is near impossible and rather painful, just wanted to see how long I was going to be experiencing this & I come accross all this. Needless to say, I’m terrified now & it’s a little too late! But i finally stopped bleeding this morning KNOCK ON WOOD, I was really hoping that it was just my normal period, which was due about surgery time. All I wanted was no more worry about getting pregnant again. Our Brady Bunch house hold has 4 kiddos and I couldnt handle another one! If I knew all of this before hand I would have insisted on him getting it done instead! I would suggest to anyone that you have your man do this! If you can both come to the agreement that you don’t want babies then he should be more than willing! His down time will be a whole 1-3 days and a frozen veggie bag for the 1st day & we get the pain of surgery & then the after effects that sound like so much fun – can’t wait!
Good Luck to you all!!

I have had 3 babies, and had my tubal on October 15, 2005.. about 3 hours after giving birth. I have had periods that last 3 days and then this past period, it lasted 1 day and no pain. I usually have the worst pain and it interupts my life, now i am freaking out. Earlier today i felt sick to my stomach and have had the worst headaches. I have had 2 miscarriages since my tubal.. does anyone know the chances of pregnancy after the tubal?

(35) April says:

I had a TL march 15th 2000, since than i have had all the symptoms heavy bleeding, horrible cramps, sharp pain in both sides that actually drop me to my knees, clots the size of half dollars, i’ve gone to alot of doctors, been told alot of things, everything from taking moltrin week prior, week of and week after. two years ago I had more tests done and they blamed it on scar tissue caused by my TL and suggested a hysterectomy. When I got the TL done i was only 22yrs old and had 2 kids, they performed surgery the day after my second kid, if i knew than what i know now would never have done it. You listen to doctors telling you that a TL is the best way to go, due to high risk pregnancy and risky deleveries but it’s all a lie. It’s better not to have it done at all.

(37) Sandy says:

I had a TI in May of 97 after the birth of my third child. I have regreted this decision ever since. I never had any problems with my period before the procedure, since then they have been horrible. Heavy, unpredictable and painful. I have been to differnet gyn’s during the past 10 years and they can never figure out why they are this way. It is obvious to me that I should not have messed with how my body is. I had three great pregnancy’s, I was made to have babies. I also did not know the emotions I would go through after having this done, I should have given the procedure much more thought then I did. My sister had hers done and she has had no problems but she did have dificult pregnacies so you just never know how your body will react. I am now looking into having a reversal done. If you are thinking of having a TI done think about it for a long time before doing so.

I had my tl 4/25/07 I have not experienced cramping but I have been bleeding ever since. Sometimes light sometimes heavy. I am more tired and irritable. I feel completely overwelmed and stressed out. I was told that while nursing I would not experience bleeding. Having a baby is stressful enough. Nursing is stressful enough why all of this? Isn’t their something we can do? If so many have these symptoms than there must be something we can all do to educate others and get help for ourselves.

Hi Ladies,
I have had my T.L. over 3 years ago and it was the WORSE decision I have ever made about my body. After a two children and a very painful IUD pregnancy I decided to go through with the surgery. I now have extremely painful ovulations and periods. I am always in pain. Sometimes the pain radiates to my back giving me a contraction like pain. I’ve been to my doctor and he suggested taking shots to shut down my ovaries which will cause an early menopause…I’m 29 years old!!! Not only am I searching for another doctor, I’m also seeking advice from woman who has experienced this. I can’t live like this I am PMS-ING 24/7.!!!! Please Help.

(41) melissa says:

I had my TL right after the birth of my daughter (c-section) on November 2, 2006 and at first everything seemed somewhat ok. I bled for the whole 6 weeks postpartum (only bled 3 1/2 weeks with my son 5 years prior) then my periods after that kept coming later and later each month. This month I thought I missed my period altogether, but I finally got it 2 1/2 weeks later on may 17 and I am still spotting from it. I had intense pain this period, so much so that I thought I might have a tubal pregnancy or a very bad cyst. Went to gyno right before my period started to make sure I wasn’t pregnant and asked if my period coming later and later was a sign of early onset menopause. I was told that TL women usually experience a normal menopause and that tubal pregnancies are more common for women around their 40′s (I’m only 26). One other thing I wanted to mention; my mom had a TL when she was 23 (she had 4 kids by that age) and she ended up having to have a hysterectomy at age 31 due to heavy bleeding (she bled every single day). She regrets every single day having her tubal. Also her best friend experienced the same problem and had to have a hysterectomy 8 years after her TL (she was 34). PLEASE IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING TUBAL MAKE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED FOR ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES AND IF YOU HAVE A MALE PARTNER ASK THEM TO GET “FIXED” INSTEAD!

Hello everyone.. I had my TL March 27,2007 about 6 weeks after my third child’s birth I am 29 years old, so far no painful cramping, but I have not have a regular period just sppoting for about three or four days then nothing; I was nursing my baby and stopped a three months old (just this month (May)). I am hoping my regular period to start this coming month if not, then I guess I will have to go see my doctor. Any one experiencing my symtoms? Kind of worried!

(43) Amber says:

Hello everyone! I had my tubal ligation on 6-9-06 and its now 8-14-07 and I have had irregular periods every since. Some time I will go a couple of months with out having a period. and then again sometimes my period will come every couple of weeks. Sometimes it will be very, very, painful, and then sometimes it won’t be as bad. I don’t know if that’s normal after a tubal ligation, or if it’s something I need to be worried about! I haven’t talked to anybody, that has the same symptoms as I do. So if anyone has also had the same experiance, I would like to talk to them. thanks so much! Amber

I had my TL 14 years ago, I was put on birth control due to BAD cramps and heavy bleeding. All was good until I turned 37 and they took the pill away from me because I smoke. I am now 39 and I cry like a baby every month, I am soon to go get a D& C as if that will help! I will take things back in control by going to Mexico and getting a large supply of birth contorl myself! If you are thinking of a TL, PLEASE think again!

I got a tubal in May 2006. I have been experiencing extreme pain from cramps and bleeding almost everyday. I have a menstral cup and I’m thankful for that or I would have spent a fortune on pads and the like.
I recently started birth control pills and haven’t stopped bleeding. It’s been a 1 1/2 mths on the pill. I have been stressed as hell sence the operation. My patience is nil. I think I would have much rather had another baby then deal with all of this. Too bad I didn’t see this first or listen to what everyone had said. It does make it harder than ever on me. I thought other people were being paranoid. Anyone wanna help me figure out what to ask my Dr? Should I ask for a ultra sound to see if things are going ok? I recently called to get some meds for my crampss! I had never had such bad cramps in my life! I feel like I”m going into labor!
I’m scared.
Thanks everyone!

I sooo wish I checked a little harder on line before I got my TL done…It’s only been a week but between the stabbing hurts to walk cramps, heavy bleeding, clots so big I can feel them, hot flashes, night sweats and the migraine that nothing can get rid of I’m really wondering, Why did I deceide to do this again? The first 2 days after the procedure have been the best so far and I’m really not looking forward to everything else everyone’s said above.
It’s been said a few times but I’d definatly change my mind if I could…

Wow! I really thought I was the only one out there feeling like this. I had my TL on May 20, 07 – during a c-section with my 3rd child. I have had 3 periods since and they have been a nightmare – the PMS before, the heavy uncontrollable bleeding during, night sweats, migraines, pain like I have never felt. And let’s not even start on the blood clots. I will see my doctor next week and hopefully she will offer advice but doesn’t sound like anyone out there has figured out a way to overcome this without a tubal reversal or a hysterectomy. I can’t do this every 2 1/2 weeks. Wished I could turn back time!

I was wondering if anyone that had a TL had problems with IBS symptoms or any kind of digestive problems? No doctor can seem to figure out the connection and the only surgery i’ve ever had was a tubal. Just wondering if anyone else has this happen.

(50) danielle says:

I had a tubal ligation done in the summer of ’06 (a couple of months after the birth of my 3rd child). Before the procedure, my periods were always and had always been pretty regular with mild to moderate symptoms. Immediately following the procedure up until now, my periods have been consistently longer and heavier with extreme symptoms which include unbearably painful cramps. I have never had cramps this bad until after having had the TL, so no one can make me believe that this isn’t the cause. I literally cannot function normally on the day before starting or for the first few days of my period because of the throbbing cramps that bring me to my knees and bring me to tears. My periods are so heavy now, that I have to use both tampons AND pads, and they are so long now, that I usually finish off two boxes of each, each time! FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING HAVING THIS PROCEDURE… IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!! I am now looking in to a reversal. As if all of the above weren’t enough, I have trouble sleeping now, a loss of libido, depression, chronic fatigue, breast tenderness, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, and a few things I’d rather not mention. This leads me to believe that I may be experiencing symptoms of Post Tubal Syndrome (PTS). HAVE YOU READ UP ON THIS?!!! PLEASE DO!!!

I had my tubal litigation in 10/02. Afterwards I have bleed my normal period that lasts 7 days, heavy bleeding, clots, painful cramps, and lower back pain during periods..I haven’t had much problems till now. I am now 31 and I had my normal period on 9/26 lasted till 10/2 then I started again on 10/10 and have been bleeding since. I checked my symptoms online through (WEBMD.com) I don’t recommend this, because it came back with all kinds of things from endometriosis to cervical cancer, endometrin cancer, etc…basically all I have done since then is worry and am scared out of my mind to go through this all by myself. I went to the Dr. to find out from him what was wrong and all he did was change my birth control pills and said my hormones were out of balance. I start my new pills on Sunday so we will see. I will keep you updated as to what happens..If I had it to do over again I wouldn’t get the TL done. I also wouldn’t have the man get the vasectomy done as it could lead to prostate cancer later in life.. Thank you all for listening…Take Care

I had a TL 7.5 years ago I have been messed up ever since. The pain, miagrains, bleeding, clots the size of golf balls, and now I have been bleeding for almost 1 month, I went to the doctor and they said it was due to the tubal. How can a doctor not link all this with this procedure and still not tell people of the side affects. It’s so wrong. I want a reversal so bad. One to elminate these symptoms, and two because I was 22 and had no clue what I was doing. I want to have more children and I may have prevented a child that should have been born. That is how I feel. And now it seems I not only suffer emotionaly it is physical too. This is so unfair. How could doctors do this to women without telling them the truth and sleep at night. Something should be done to get the truth out there. Any one wanting to discuss this further please feel free to email me at mom2brittandjess@yahoo.com

I am 41 year old mom of nine, seven of whom I had biologically. In May of 2005 I had a TL. I always had normal flow periods but irregular. Now they are every 28 days BUT heavy, crampy AWFUL! Then I stop for one day and start spotting dark blood until I ovulate! It is gross and the doctor wants me to take birth control. What was the blasted point of having a TL if I was going to put hormones into my body any way? In the three years that this has been going on I have had five UTIs. Never had that before either. Think Hard before doing this. It is not worth it.

I am so glad I found this sight. I have surgery scheduled on Feb. 5th, ’08, just 4 days from now, to have a benign cyst removed from my ovary. I considered a TL but from what I’ve read above, I don’t see it is worth what I could experience. Plus, I really didn’t have a good feeling about it anyway. It’s good to get as many facts as possible when deciding on such an important decision as this. Thanks!

(63) Susan says:

Well I can say that at least I now know that I’m not the only one going through this pain and suffering. I had mine done July of 98 after I had my son because I was married to my ex-husband and I didn’t want anymore than the 2 that we already had. Well ever since I have not been regular and when it does get close to being regular it changes up. The only thing that is regular about my period now is that it hurts both with cramps and back pain and that it now lasts for 7 days instead of 4 and is heavier than it ever had been before. I was never informed of the side effects and no I have been suffering. I have had 2 pregnancies since having it done that both resulted in miscarriage. I now have to go in for a cloposcopy on the 22nd and if they find anything that could be reversed by reversing my surgery I’m going to request that they do it. I don’t have to worry about my new husband having any problems with this choice since we are trying to beat the odds anyway. If I had the chance to go back and make the choice again I would not have the surgery because I wouldn’t want all of the problems I have had since having it done.

I had a TL July 1 2004. I delivered my son by c-section and the doctor did the TL at the same time. Since then my periods have been horrible. I also have periods every two to three weeks instead of once a month. Before the TL I was never irregular. My sister in law experienced similar problems. I tell every woman I know that is considering the operation to think about another form of birth control. I wish I never had the operation.

I had my TL surgery in May of 2007. Since the surgery i have had sever menstrual cycles as well. Painful, so much that i need to take a prescription pain killer to be able to get through the first few days of mt period. The bleeding has been very heavy. Normally my periods were scant if not absent before the surgery. I even went to the Dr. several times thinking that it was not normal that i was not having a period. I was on an oral contraceptive for 16 years prior to my surgery with no break. If I would have known then what I know now I would have never gone through with the surgery and searched for other options. Not really sure where to turn at this point as I do not want to have a hysterectomy but feel hopeless with the torture of my monthly, erratic periods.

boy… everyone’s comments are so alike. I think they need to do another reserch on this problem. I had bad cramps when I was a teen And flowed about 4 days with a few spoting, they put me on the pill when I was 16 for them. The cramps went a way and had 3 day period w/ mild flow. wonderful. I had 1 Kid at 25 and stayed on the pill till I was in my 3o’s. The Doctor told me I was getting to old to be on the pill and I started swelling at 33 so I got off and used other forms. I had 1 more child 2 years later with no form of birthcontrol pills. I had to have a emergency C-cection and had my tubal at that time in Dec 19 2005. I went back to having worse periods that are lasting 12 to 15 day. Pooring like so many others are talking about. Yes I have pain in the back, feel like your butt is falling out. and legs hurt. Have not been back to the doctor. I am glad that I can’t have anymore children because I don’t want anymore at 38 yr old but this is so bad when you go to the bathroom and the toilet is red it makes you feel like you are bleeding to death. And yes I also can feel big clots flow out when you are sitting or walking. I am very shy now when I have my Monthly. I try not to do anything that I have to get to far from the bathroom because you always feel you need to go change. And yes I have to take Ibuprofen for the pain and swelling. Sometimes I am moody. I never had to take medication since I was a Teen.

I had my t.l. 8 yrs ago in August. Before it I had never experienced cramping or heavy bleeding. The most I ever bled was 4 days with minimal bleeding. Since the operation I have cramps so bad that I must take medication for 6 of the 7 days I bleed. The bleeding is extremely horrible and blod clots that are very large! I was never warned of any of this when I had my tubal. This is something a dr should tell you, there are other birth control options out there that I would’ve used for sure. I am now going to have a tubal reversal and am praying that it will reverse the problems I am having. I tried to use the depo shot as my gyn recommended because before my t.l. I was on it and it stopped my periods but I tried using it and it made me have break thru bleeding and the periods were still the same. If you are considering a tubal JUST SAY NO!!!!

I too had a TL, in September 2004 after my second child was born C-section. I went a year with heavy bleeding, large clots and bad cramping. Then I started on a birth control, it worked for a while but I had bad PMS. It eventually stopped working and ever since then I have been switching from brand to brand of BC because I can’t stand the symptoms I have from my tubal. I am almost to the point of wanting a hysterectomy because this just plain sucks. TL is not worth it.

(82) Jennifer says:

I had a TL on July 22,2000. Two weeks after having the TL I started gushing blood and ended up calling my doctor. I thought I was hemmoraging. He told me no it was normal proceedure after having a baby and a TL. This was my 3rd child. Well I didn’t stop bleeding and ended up having a cantalope sized blod clot come out of me in 2 sections.
Ever since my TL… I have had very irregular periods. I used to get my period ever month on the 4th and it would last a complete 7 days. My period was so regular I could pretty much pin point the time I needed to go and insert a tampon or put on a pad. Now it is 2008 and my periods are still messed up. I had a period for the first time in over 8 months 3 weeks ago and it lasted a whole 2 weeks of heavy bleeding. Then just 2 days ago I was at work and went to the bathroom and noticed once again a heavy flow of blood. It stopped after 1 1/2 days. I have to constantly wear pads to be in the ” Just in case ” mode.
I have gone to over 5 different doctors for opinions. They all try to tell me it is because I am overweight. I was overweight before I became pregnat, during and after each child and my periods were normal until the TL.
I regret having my tubal done now. I am 30. Also after having my tubal I started growing these little hairs on my stomach. They are easily pulled out. But my hormones have changed rapidly since the TL. I now have like 3 hairs growing around my nipples, little hairs growing on my stomach. I also get what the doctors call phantom kicks in my uterus. I think it is my muscles contracting. I am always feeling them move and contract and I can literally watch my stomach move up and down like when I was pregnant and the baby was kicking. It is an awful feeling not knowing or getting any medical advise or treatment.

I had my TL in Aug 2007, after my third child. I had been breastfeeding her ever since, so I didn’t get my first period until March. It was the heaviest period I have ever had in my life. I had a tampon in and when I stood up blood gushed past it as if it wasn’t there (sorry if tmi). Last month I didn’t get a period, just some light pink spotting in the middle of the month. Then now, time for my period again, I had two days of brownish spotting and now nothing. I’m very tempted to get a pregnancy test… I got my tubes tied so I wouldn’t have to worry about pregnancy. I’ve been reading so much about people getting pregnant after having it done I am still just as worried I’m pregnant as before.. especially with messed up periods.

I came across this site when looking up info about menstrual pain after a TL. My story is so much like all the others, regular periods with a mild flow, like clockwork. I had a TL after a c-section in May 2003 with my fourth child. My cycle is still regular but I have such bad cramps. One time I was in so much pain I went to the ER. At the time I did not associate the pain with my menstrual cycle. I had two pelvic utltrasounds in the same month. I feared the worst. The results were normal, thank God, but I continue to have severe pain and pass clots which I never have before the TL. My yearly PAPs have been normal. Now I know I’m not exaggrating when I describe how bad it feels. Thank you all for sharing.

I had my TL the day after the birth of my 2nd child. I have never recovered. I felt everything in both deliveries, each inch the child progressed, the crowning and all the rest. But nothing has compared to the progression that I have felt with my symptoms since my TL. I also had a perfect period before my TL, even after my 1st child. But I am so different now, in so many ways. Bouts of Depression, up and down mood swings(mostly down). I am not the only one suffering. My family is having to deal with the new me. I have terrible pain. I have always been active. I lost every LB after my 1st pregnancy with no problem, but I not only didn’t lose the pregnancy weight this time, I actually gained. I weigh more now than the day I delivered my last child. I am always on my feet, I walk several times a week, eat right, and exercise. But, I can’t even drop one LB. I wish I had this knowledge before I decided on the TL, I would have opted to sstay on Birth Control Pills, so much less baggage with them.

I also had a TL in 2002 after the c-section birth of my fourth child. Since that time I have extremely heavy periods that cause me to be anemic. The clotting is especially bad on the second day passing clots evey hour that are at least the size of a silver dollar if not larger. I wish I would have known of all these side affects before i had the tubal! I would not have had the surgery done.

Hello, I just wanted to say Thank you to all of you who have left a comment. I was scheduled to have the TL on June 6, 2008. On June 1, 2008 I was doing more research on TL to be sure that’s what I wanted and I came across this website. I am so Thankful that I read all of your comments first before I had it done. I knew that I could take the chance of having that happen to me. So on Monday morning I called my doctor and told him no TL for me! Thank you again for saving me from a big mistake.

I had a TL March 31, 2007 after 5 hours after the birth of my 4th child. I was 39. I have had somewhat painful periods every month since then, mostly in my side(s) and in the past few months I’ve also had pain in my hip bones towards the front. I had a 5 day period last week (Sun. – Thu.) and started again today. I’ve never had that happen before. Is the hip pain common? I know the irregular and reoccurring periods are. Thanks!

I had my tl 1/19/07 after the birth of my 4th child, which was my 4th c-section. I can say almost the same as most of the women on here. Heavy bleeding, severe cramps, severe back ache with pain shooting down my legs, excessive mood swings, inability to lose baby weight, anemia, low energy…I have it ALL, I’m trying to figure out how to manage it in a natural way. Still researching into alternative meds to try and get as close as I can to achieving hormonal balance. It’s nice to know that I’m not alone in this…but it sucks that we are ALL going through it.:(

I just had my third child in february and had a TL immediately after(vaginal delivery). Everything was normal. I had the normal post partum bleeding and then 2 weeks after that I had my first period which I thought was odd because I was breast feeding. It lasted for 5 days which is normal for me but I also had no pain or clotting which is not normal. It is now June 13….. I have not breast fed my son in over 3 weeks and have not had a period in a little over a month and a half. I am worried because my husband thinks I am pregnant. Has anyone else had this problem?

(95) brianna says:

I’m 24 years old. I have 3 children. Before my third pregnancy I started having an almost non-stop period. I was bleeding for two weeks straight with one only one weed off. Not too heavy and with some cramping. By the time I finally went to the doctor about it and was about to get some tests done…I got pregnant. And, of course, it stopped.
I got a tubal ligation after having my third child by c-section (i had a cesarean with all three) and had the usual post delivery bleeding. My son is now a year old. I just stopped breastfeeding him and just started my period again. Last month i went to the e.r. with extreme pain in my left side. I thought I had an ovarian cyst (which i have a history of), but after a slue of tests nothing came up. Now I’m having that pain again and started bleeding heavily last night. I just wanted to see if this is normal for post tubal and breastfeeding? Or if I’m just being a baby?

To anyone considering tubaligation>>>DON’T!!!
I had one seven years ago after my third child via C-section. I thought I had researched it. I spoke with a family member who had it and it seemed to make sense to get the procedure done. Today I suffer from extreme anemia because of the heavy bleeding and clotting. It has gotten worse every year. I recently have developed hip pain as well. The scary part is that there is no true solution to this problem! It also appears that more research needs to be done to figure out why we are all suffering so much. How many doctors have recommended hysterectomy to solve the problem?

(97) ELynn says:

I just got my tubes tied fairly recently. June 23rd 2008. It is now July 6th, and I have been going through certain things like:
Hot flashes…ALL THE TIME :-(
Cramping that is around my lower back, abdomen.
Pain in my chest and breasts
Emotions ranging from extreme happiness and joy to crying for nothing!
I wake up to feed my children, and then put them for naps, so I can sleep to. I am not someone who takes naps. I also will sleep from midnight to almost 10 in the morning! I am someone who likes to be up early, not waste away the day.
Also, I now have the urge to urinate frequently.
I knew about some of the risks, and was told most risks are involved with the surgery itself. I did not expect hot flashes, and I thought it was normal at first because it IS summer, and so hot. I found when it cooled off at night, I was still lying in bed, overcome with these hot flashes! I have not had a period yet, it’s too soon for that I think.
Really though, it feels quite uncomfortable.
I thought I had had an infection of some sort, but now I know it is just PTLS :-(

Reading all these comments makes me feel like at least I’m not alone…
I had 4 c-sections in 00,02,04,06 May,2006 I got my tubes tied w/c-section pain was unbearable, as most of you know. a yr later I went to GYN to complain about extremely heavy bleeding, long periods and huge clots. I had a ultrasound and bloodwork all “normal” I went to another Dr. and she looked at the U/S report “multiple follicular cysts on ovaries etc..” she sent me for more bloodwork and Dx Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, but never in my life did I have any symptoms until my T/L
Male hair growth patterns and all it’s getting worse as time goes by and still have’nt resolved the horrible bleeding.
I went from 3 day bearly nothing periods to 2 wks to a mnth of bleeding so bad I can’t leave the house :( Dont get ur Tubes Done!!!!

I had a tubal ligation performed 6 years ago right after the birth of my daughter. I regret it now for more things than one. Since then, I have been experiencing bouts with depression, moodiness, severe cramping, blood clotting, dizziness, headaches, severe anemia, breast aches and leaking, and lower back aches. My doctor suggested to me that I consider tubal reversal. I hear that this procedure is very expensive and insurance companies do not pay for it. Any other suggestions

I had a TL about a month and a half after having my fifth baby Feb 7, 2008 at first everything seemed fine I was bleeding for about a week which I was told was normal after the surgery. I had my first period and it seemed normal at first then BAM! I had extremely heavy flow I had never ever experienced this before in my life. I’ve always had normal light periods which lasted 3-4 days with very little discomfort. Now I am on my third period since the surgery and I just won’t stop I’ve been spotting for about 5 days now and then it suddenly got heavier and hasnt stopped yet. There is definetly nasty side effects to having this surgery extremely long, abnormal periods there must be a reason for this. I was never on any birth control before the TL so no it can’t be that.

I have had heavy bleeding constantly for the past 14 months after the birth of my last child. I had mirena and it had no affect. I am unable to take the pill due to hormone reactions. I am having a t/l and was told by my gyno that this was my last option before a hysterectomy and because of my age basically i had to have this. I am almost 30 with 3 kids and i am now terrified of the t/l. I have always had problems with periods and have now come to the conclusion that a hysterectomy is my only answer. Should i go ahead with the surgery in two weeks. HELP

I had a tubal almost five yars ago after the birth of my 3rd child. I felt great after the delivery and a day later had the tubal.I was miserable for weeks. My periods have been very heavy and painful. 1-2 days a month it was difficult to leave the house. I thought it was just age. During my last physical I talked to my dr about it. We did not discuss the tubal as a cause but he confirmed that my periods were definately outside what is considered to be “normal”. We discussed options and I have decided to have NovaSure Endometrial ablation. I had 2 different types of sonograms to rule out cysts and polyps or any abnormalities that might cause heavy bleeding. I am scheduled to have the procedure this week. I a soooo looking forward to it! Good luck to all and please talk to your doctors. You do no have to suffer and any dr that tells you it is normal should be replaced! Find a dr who will listen to you and provide options for treatment.

I hate to say it, but we’re these doctors income and they’re lying to women everday, they’ve known about PTLS for decades now, this is nothing new, the only reason why us women are finding out about it, is because of the internet, otherwise we would never know. Doctors are told to lie to us and tell us there are no side effects and then when we go to them, they’re supposed to tell us it’s in our head and or we are depressed. They’re full of it and I’m angry for everyone of us they’re doing this to day in and day out, why aren’t we informed, my life hasn’t been the same since my TL, over 35 symptoms are in my head, give me a break, I was never on BCP, so they need to come out with the truth to us women and need to inform us before doing a TL, it’s too late for me, but doesn’t have to be for others. This is a sick kind of procedure they’re doing on women, I’ll tell you that much. I hate my GYNO for what she’s done to me and my family!!!

OH MY GOD!!!! I am sooooo sorry you all are going through this. This is like a horror movie. I’m 28 and am pregnant with my 2nd child and because of the constant cramping with this child I was considering getting a tubal ligitation like the same day. I WILL NOT!! I went through some complications after having a c-section with my first child and there is no way I want to reexperience that. I mean I was bleeding soccer balls of blood I had to go to the er and then I admitted myself (Yes I did. The doctor said I was fine and can go home if I want. I said I’ll stay). By the time I got up to my room my temp spiked to 105. The doctor’s word isn’t always the right one. MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF YOU!!! GOD BLESS YOU!

I just recently had my 3rd child on July 19th. My husband had decided to get ‘fixed’ but since I had a c-section I just told them to go ahead and tie my tubes. I’m scared because I bled for 3 weeks after the delivery then stopped for a week and a half then I started bleeding again. I haven’t had really bad cramps or pain, but I have been bleeding for 2 weeks now and passing huge clots that I can feel when they come out. I hate going anywhere because I scared I’ll bleed all over the place. Every time I pick up my son I start gushing. I don’t know what to do. My husband was excited about the 6 weeks mark, but he will have to wait.I have a dr appointment next week. I am hoping that he will have a solution for me. But after reading these I’m scared this will never stop. My friend had to have a hysterectomy 2 years after her tubes were tied because she never stopped bleeding. And of course I didn’t listen to her. :(

I had a tl in April 2007. I also have had irregular bleeding. My doctor said to just give it some time because I had taken bc for over 12 years. I don’t have a normal period. I also bleed dark red blood in the mornings when I have to wait for a family member to get out of the bathroom. When I have to hold it. and may not bleed the rest of the day. Does anyone else have that problem? My doctor says give it some time. But what worries me the most is just bleeding like that in the mornings I don’t know if it may be a urinary problem then.

i had my tubal immediately after the c-section birth of my 6th child.dec.20th.07
i bled for 3 months(heavily for 2 but it tappered and finally stopped at the end of the 3 month).
i had my first post-pregnancy cycle in july. the pain was sooo bad i litterally told my 13 year old son that if i fell asleep on the couch to wake me up to make sure i was still alive! i wasnt bleeding yet so i was really confused and scared. the pain stopped be excruiciating but didnt entirely disappear. 2 days after that i started to bleed. it lasted heavily for 6 days and lighly for about another 6!
last month, the pain was just as bad and same thing happened.pain/no bleeding, 2 days goes by and bleedign starts, about 6 days heavily but only about 3 days lightly. THIS MONTH-ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pain so bad i once again asked(my hubby this time) to check on me when sleeping to make sure i was still alive! PLUS-took a total of about 12 ibuprofen in one 24 period! and STILL im in pain as i write!
i WILL most DEFINATLEY be talking with my GP about this and SOON!
i would rather have one child per year for the next 20 yrs than continue on with this pain on a monthly basis! atleast then id get another beautiful child out of the ordeal!

I had my tl in April 2003 after just turning 27. They did my tl while delivering my 3rd child because I had a c-section. Ever since my tl nothing has been normal. My period comes whenever it wants to when prior to tl I was every 28 days like clockwork (that’s how I knew I was pregnant) now I can get it anywhere from 17 days after the start to 33 days after the start of my last one. It last from 5 to 7 days but afterward until ovulation I spot (which I didn’t do before) and I have awful blood stained mucus (which I never had before) so I won’t let my hubby go near me for fear of grossing him out. I have large clots during my period large enough that I feel them coming out. Ovulating is awful I’m in so much pain when I do now that I’m hunched over. I also get back pain mid-cycle now too as well as by breasts being so tender starting from mid-cycle until I get my period that I would swear I was pregnant. My most troubling symptom that I have had recently although I haven’t noticed anyone else post this one is I am getting bad acne. I always had clear skin even as a teenager now I have acne everywhere and I am 32 years old. I am embarrassed to show my face because I won’t just get it with my period I get it while I’m ovulating too. Then there is the whole feeling of regret that I have because I can’t ever have another child. I thought I was making the right decision because my 3rd child was an accident because they wouldn’t give my husband a vasectomy. If I could go back I would never do this again

I had a tubal in 2006 about a year after I gave birth to my 3rd child. Because of other medical conditions that I have, I am unable to use any kind of medication that has hormones. I was on the 10-year iud (no hormones), but after talking with my doctor and my spouse, I decided to go with the tubal. I regret it ever since. My periods used to come regularly and lasted 4 to 5 days. Since I had my tl, my periods last a week at minimum and I feel like I have a river pouring out of my body with large clots on the 2nd and 3rd days. I’ve gone back to my doctor and now he’s suggesting that I have the endometrial ablation done. You know where they burn the lining of the uterus…I do not know what to do, but I wish I had never done the tl.

Hello Ladies! I too had a TL in Jan’06 after my 3rd child & thought it was the best thing in the world until I got my first cycle. To date my cycles are NEVER in a 28 day cycle or the same month ot month. One month I will bleed like a slaughtered pig messing up my clothes on a daily bases because of the goosh spurts & the cramping is simply unbearable. I not only get bad abdominal cramps… I get extreme back aches that only can be relieved by a day of laying in the bed taking a muscle relaxer!!! Before I had my TL my cycle could be controlled by tylenol & a cup of hot tea! NOT ANYMORE!!! I have asked my OB over & over again is this normal & their response is yes… this is a side effect of the TL & the only comfort they give is to put me on birth control pills to control the bleeding…no thanks…the last thing I want to think of is taking a tiny pill every day at the same time for the rest of my life!!! I don’t want to scare mothers who want to get a TL because the long term benefits are great, but I think you should also hear & know that there are some negatives as well! For those of you who haven’t tried it.. when I start cramping (because my cycle never comes the day I start cramping) I only drink hot liquids & I use a heating pad. HEAT HEAT HEAT is the best thing to comfort you outside of curling up into a knot!!

I am so glad to see that I am not the only person dealing with these issues! I had my tubal on May 25, 2007. I’ve had 3 c-sections and with my last c-section is when I had my tubal. My periods have been so out of whack since then. I had the first inital bleeding for about 2 weeks. But about 2 weeks later the bleeding began again. I called the doctor he said it was normal. I did not have a period until September 2007. And during the month of September there was only about 5 or 6 days that I did not have heavy bleeding (those days were basically just spotting). Once again I called the doctor and he said the same thing, it’s normal. I did not have another period until December 2007. This one was very heavy with large clots. It lasted for about 3 days, stopped for a little over a week then started again and last for another 6 days. I have dealt with the irregularness since. Since my tubal I have had severe cramps; to the point it hurts to walk or even move. I pass large clots and have terrible mood swings. And since my tubal I have also noticed dark facial hair on my lip and chin. It’s driving me crazy. I expressed all of my concerns to my doctor, who said it was all normal. I’ve had my pap test and pelvic exams and they came back fine. I have even switched doctors, and she says the same thing. I’m currently taking iron tablets because I have become anemic. My periods are so irregular I never know when it will start, how long its going to last, or if I’ll have more than one in a month.

I only had a 2 to 3 day break in between the normal 6 weeks after c-section bleeding and spotting and then this…constant bleeding, clots, ect. I had my tubal in May of 2004 after the birth of my third child. At first everything was great I didn’t have any cramps, long & /or irregular periods. Over the past 3 years my periods have become extreemly irregular ( some months I haven’t had one & others I’ve had two!!) My periods flow so heavily that I have to wear both tampons & pads & now last 7-10 days when they used to last 4. I became anemic & my hormone levels are low so now I have to take both iron & progesterone. Getting this done was both a blessing & a curse since my husband & I never wanted anymore than three children however we were never made aware of all the issues that it could & did cause!! I would not suggest this proceedure to anyone! If I could do it over I think I would rather be back on the shot than going through this at least I knew what I was in for!

I am trying the BC first. So far this month the BC has worked. I am going to give it some time, if it doesnt work I am going to have the ablation.

I had a tubal in 2006 and since then my periods have been much heavier than before I had the surgery. I’m now a month late for my period and so nervous that I may be pregnant. However, a few months ago I was about 2 weeks late and I went to the doctor but the blood test was negative for pregnancy. Now I’m wondering if it’s all in my head…. I’ve been looking up online about pregnancy rates after a tubal and it’s about 1.45% chance that you can get pregnant which is more than if you correctly take the birth control pill!

Hello….I (32 at time)had a TL on Oct 11 2007 just after c-section with my second child. I thought this was the way to go, not wanting to get pregnant and not really being able to since I have to take cholesterol meds. My periods before TL were pretty normal and without cramps, and almost no bleeding when taking the pill. After the TL and c-section combo I did not quit bleeding for 6-7 weeks, which the doctor blamed on me doing too much. I didnt do anymore and actually probably less than with 1st c.s. and only bled for about 7-9 days. Every month after TL my periods got worse with heavier bleeding, more cramps and more clotting. My periods were on average 9 days of utter hell. I bled through a tampon and pad in about an hour. Finally after about 4-5 months, I talked to my doctor who put me on the pill to help control my periods. My periods shortened to 7 days with somewhat less bleeding but it did not effect the cramps. Now I am bleeding and cramping between periods. I have went back to gny who has ran a few test and we are now discussing my options such as uterine ablasion or uterus removal and so on….The more I read and continue to have problems, I am definately leaning to uterus removal! If I would have know that TL would lead to so many problems, I would have rethought my decision. Also, I have a couple friends that are having the same problems. Hope this helps someone!

Thank you for all your input. I have had a TL (Aug 2008) after my third child. I didn’t know about the side effects until now. I am also having very heavy bleeding that makes me use the bathroom every 2.5 hours for the first 3-4 days and then a light flow for 2-3 days. I am having huge mood swings too. I haven’t experienced any major cramps yet but we will see what happens next cycle. I tried using the Diva Cup but it only works for the lighter flow days. I do not recommondmend a TL to anyone I meet. I am looking forward to trying to find a solution.

I had a TL on 11/19/08. I am 29 and never had a child. I had been on birth control for irregular periods since the age of 16 (PCOS)and of course birthcontrol. I wanted to stop pumping my body with hormones and figured I would deal w/ not getting a period at all. Now that I have had the TL I have regular cycles.. but not regular flow. It is horriably painful and heavy (not as bad as many of you). I feel like I am being stabbed down on my knees pain just laying in bed with tears streaming down my face.. I went to the doctor to be told that this is just me ovualating the week before, and then it is normal to get a small cyst on your ovarty the week of. So here I am 2 periods later. I haved horiable pain after.. and I guess that is me still healing from the surgery.. all for diff reasons.. oh and.. I can’t have intercourse because that hurts too.. All so I could stop taking the pill.. now my doc is suggesting that I go back on the pill…but no answers yet on why it hurts to have sex.
I have mixed feelings on the surgery. I am happy that I got it.. because I want a 100% on not getting prego.. but with the pain I am not having sex anyway..

Hello Ladies,

I had my tubes tide in September of 2008 after my third child turned one. Two days after my surgery, my period came a week early. For the first two to three months I had EXTREMELY heavy bleeding. I was litterally going through one super plus tampon per hour at night. I was up more often than when my kids were infants. I also had a lot of pain near my ovaries. My doctor told me that I would be irregular for a couple of months and that there was NO reason for the pain. It is now almost 5 months later and my periods are still irregular(which were always exactly every 28 days and lasting for about 5 days pre surgery). I bleed through superplus tampons…which means I have to wear a pad and tampon. My periods are not as heavy as they were in the first three months, but they are still at least 2-3X heaveir than pre-surgery. I also have significant ovulation pain and a brownish ovulation discharge. Does anyone know if this will go away????? Has anyone had the surgery reversed due to these problems and gone back to normal????? I would appreciate any feedback here!

My Tubal Ligation, has resulted in many ectopic pregnancies, severe PMS, sometimes its like Im a completely different ME? I vommit the day I start my period, but only about every third month, so about 4/12 yr avg. I pass clots, and can’t use tampons at all, as it forces more convulsions. I have dystention in my stomach about a week or two prior to starting my flow. Its at times unbearable, but we struggle through. I think they need to provide counseling pre/post Opp. It baffles the mind, how clueless I was in regards to how having a TL would effect my lifestyle, and me as a person. I wish i’d seen all these posts prior to that forever regretable day.

HEAR ME OUT!! I don’t suggest not getting the TL, only b/c something inside you said “I don’t want anymore kids”. And if your kids are anything like my 3 kids-so help you god (THEY DEMAND A LOT OF MY ATT.)!! And I got pregnant twice off of birth control. However, I’ve had my TL for 3 years now and the 1st. year was better than ever, shorter (3-4days)and less painful, the 2nd. year it alternated like the 1st mo. it would be manageable, the next mo. it would be unbearable (in my opinion). Now,(OMG) 3years to the date it came as expected and I was fine with that, then it came 19 days later, and then here I am again 19 days later feeling the same way I did 2 weeks ago. So, now I am starting to freak out b/c i’ve never had irregular periods. It’s bad enough getting it once a month. Now, i’m on the internet trying to diagnose myself. I’ve literally read every comment on here and I hope mines don’t get that extreme. I’ve talked to a couple of people who were surprised I was so pleased at 1st. But, the way it’s sounds is like a down hill spiral. 1st. you make THE decision to no longer have kids, then you have the TL and your still miserable, then you consider/or get a hysterectomy, and your still not happy with that-”So when does it stop”. Good Luck!!

I had my tubal ligation in 1994. I had it done right there when I had my c-section. I wish I had researched it more, because now, even if I wanted to get pregnant again, I would need lots of help. After the tubal, I had HEAVY periods, and painful to boot. With BIG clots. As my bleeding got worse, my moods got worse. go figure. I eventually had a hysterectomy, because I developed pre-cancer. That sucked. And now, I am divorced. Would like to consider giving marriage another go around, but a guy would have to like teenagers, being a step-parent, and adoption, because I am Roman Catholic. Maybe I can marry an ex-priest who will be really understanding about what I have been through. I hope people begin to see that tubals are not all they are cracked up to be. Because I never took birth control pills, either. I was offered some, when I was having pre-marital sex, with the guy I divorced, as a teenager (the father of my 3 children; a good guy, but really mean to me, and tried to get rid of me since before our oldest was born)

I have a personal theory that the reason these things end up badly and in miscarrages and hysterectomies is because there is no place for an egg to go, after it is shut out from its natural path. The body gets confused as to how to take that egg and absorb it into the system. It is a physiological thing, as well as a physical and mental thing.

This was so heavy (not to be gross), but I had to wear a pad and resort to also grabbing my daughters diaper and using it as a pad to absorbe more. I just figured this is because I had a baby 3 months prior. had another heavy bleed a month later… 2 weeks following that spotting.. now I am waiting for my next period.

Since my bleeding is so heavy and i am in a constant state of PMS it is making myself and my family miserable. Not only that but due to the cravings of sugars, fats and salt I have added 10kgs to my frame. When going through complications with my surgeon, none of this was mentioned and have even been told by his staff “well you were lucky that you were fortunate to have such light, short periods for 1/2 of your life” great!!!!! Did not help.
Hoping to come out on the positive side of all this soon….

i had a tubal performed last year after my 4th child was born by section. i have been messed up ever since and i regret having it. i have had very painful periods with huge blood clots and my periods are not regular at all like before. i didn’t take BCPs before. these periods are worse than when i was in my teens. i have an ovarian cyst but the doctors don’t want to blame it on the cyst but instead want to do an endometrial biopsy and i just don’t want that. i know it is because of the ovarian cyst. i am 35 and no one wants to remove my ovary because i am too young they say. these periods are disrupting my life. i am trying to lose weight and the pain is getting in the way. there is a syndrome called post tubal syndrome or something like that. but doctors don’t tell patients all the risks because they want women to have tubals, especially those who have had sections. i don’t have insurance right now because the insurance with my husband’s employer sucks. so i have to pay and i am tired of not getting help but getting bills. this is how gyns and obs make money. at least with insurance they don’t get the full amount but self pays have to pay it all. it sucks. i am tired of the pain and the bleeding and the clots. i have also had a hydrosalpinx which is whent he fluid in the tube can’t get out and swells up and that is painful as heck. again, risks they don’t tell you about. i don’t reccommend anyone get a tubal because it messes you up. if the ovaries quit working, which do in alot of women after a tubal, then your body just goes haywire. i think that is what is also going on with me.

I had a tubal done during a c-section when my 2nd child was born in 2004. for the first 2 yrs I had normal periods, but since then I have had very irregular ones, The longest I had gone without a period was 2 months, my mom says its early menopause, but I am only 28. I have not had a period since the beginning of May 2009, it is now July and I have taken pregnancy tests and they keep coming out negative or inconclusive. I have tenderness of the breasts, frequent urination, I have not been able to keep anything down in almost 2 weeks now. Im always tired, never hungry, the nausea will not go away. When I started missing my periods I called the OBGYN who delivered my daughter and performed the tubal and asked exactly what they did when it was performed, I was told that all he did was cut and tied them in a bow (dont know if he was making a joke about the bow) So I was wondering if it was possible for them to grow back together since I was told that he tied them back together after cutting them. When I do have the periods the pain is horrendous I cramp I pass clots everything the worst pain I feel is in my incision from the c-section. I was cut on my bikini line for both of my c-sections, with my 6 yr old I was cut from hip to hip and it got severely infected, I was on the pill and got pregnant with my 2nd child the new doc cut mt enough to get her out and I had no infections. He also tried to repair the incision because of all the scar tissue, I remember him making the comment that he had never seen so much scar tissue in a c-section incision before. but that’s my story so if anyone has any responses I am glad to read them any and all help is great.

While nursing, my period was just like it was before I had my TL, maybe even a little better than before. Since I stopped nursing, I have had heavy, long periods. I have only been off my period for 17 days and I started this morning. My last period lasted for 9 days. More than the long and heavy periods, my concern is my emotions. I am like a crazy woman! I have a call in to my Dr. She had said when I saw her on 6/18/2009 that I may have to get on the pill for a little while to regulate my periods. It is irritating because I had a TL to keep from having to take the pill.

(178) Sharri says:

For all of you who are suffering I say a prayer to God for each of you. All the things you describe after having a TL are affects that I often wondered if they were from the TL I had in 1980. I’m 51 and up until 7 years ago I had bleeding so heavy that I had to go to the ER many times, severe anemia, having to take a months worth of birth control pills in a week to try to stop the bleeding which made me feel suicidal, feeling like I was going crazy etc. I thank God and give Him all the praise and glory for the alternative I found to having a hysterectomy. Please do not have a hysterectomy. I know the desperation–anything to try to get the bleeding and pain to stop causes so many women to have unnecessary hysterectomies and so many doctors are all too accomodating but having a hysterectomy can make things even worse!!!!!!
There is an organization called H.E.R.S. Hysterectomy Education Resource Service that I located on the internet when a so called specialist doctor was going to do a hysterectomy on me. The woman who started this organization had a bad hysterectomy and wanted to inform women of alternatives. She is a doctor who consults with you on the phone for a reasonable fee and discusses alternatives. She gave me instructions to have my family doctor do a specific pelvic ultrasound and the radiologist said normally he doesn’t say anything to the patient but he said that everything was normal and that there should be no reason to have a hysterectomy. He said to try to find a university hospital that would have the latest techinques instead of having a hysterectomy. I thank God for the woman at H.E.R.S. and I thank God for that radiologist! There is a procedure called an hysteroscopy and endometrial ablation. There is one that uses hot water but is not as effective. I wouldn’t even mess with that one. There may be moire advanced alternatives such as laser since it has been a few years since I had this problem. I had to take male hormones to thin the lining of my uterus for a month and then had this endometrial ablation procedure.
The hysteroscopy is a scope they use to look into the uterus and then using an electric current ball inside the uterus they destroy the lining of the uterus enough to stop the pain and bleeding and the goal was to have this last long enough until I no longer had periods. Many people who have this procedure no longer have periods or just have spotting. The worst period I ever had since having this procedure was having to wear a pad and only had to change it maybe three or four times a day for the first couple days. Most of the time I would only have spotting if any period at all. I know that I was glad I no longer had heavy bleeding but like so many things in life I took for granted what God had done for me. When I think of the years of terror I had of having such heavy frightening periods and the things I would have to do to make sure I wouldn’t bleed through my clothes like wearing super plus tampons and the biggest pads I could find….. When I think of the difference this has made in my life I have to thank God. How easy it has been to forget the suffering that came after the TL after having the ablation procedure, but after reading about what all of you are going through I just cry for all of you and I pray that this post will be just what some person needs to hear. There is hope after TL. If you are considering having a TL….please reconsider. It is not worth it. If you have had a TL and you are desperate and believe me I understand……I would have done almost anything to no longer have the heavy bleeding. Please think before you agree to have a hysterectomy. There are so many problems associated with having a hysterectomy. God made our bodies with all the parts of us needed. Look what happens when doctors mess with our fallopian tubes; interrupting the delicate balance and functions of what God made our fallopian tubes to do. They regulate so much more than just having a ovulation each month. The same with doctors who take out a woman’s ovaries, uterus and cervix when they do a hysterectomy. Many women have horrible things happen after a hysterectomy. The ovaries regulate so many things and the cervix is also a structural part of our body needed to keep things in place. Many women have prolapes where part of their body even comes out of their vagina.
God’s word says we are fearfully and wonderfully made and that we were perfectly knit together in our mother’s womb. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior the Holy Spirit of God Himself dwells within us and our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit. When I think about the intricacy of the human body and how everything functions perfectly just like God intended and then I think about what we as women do to our bodies. We use birth control pills that mess with our hormones just so we can keep from having another baby. I’ve done it! I’m not casting any stones here. We let doctors cut us up because they say it is best. For who? Them? I have learned that for many doctors it is all about the money! Then there are caring and wonderful doctors but they are not told what can happen after what seems to them to be such an innocent procedure. After all it’s just a tubal ligation or if we are older we no longer will have kids so we don’t need our uterus or ovaries any longer. And when we try to say to our doctors that we are having problems after a TL we are just the patients afterall. What do we know? We know our bodies better than any other person does. Other than God, who knows our body better? I would love to write a book or put a website together or both to warn women of these types of procedures! At least I’m doing what I can here. If anybody wants to write to me you can send an email to sharrisgraphics@gmail.com
I read each of your posts and I prayed to God for each of you. I pray you have physical healing, emotional healing and also spiritual healing. I still have emotional problems, depression and mental problems but I’m unsure if it is from the TL or years of abuse that I had or both.
Regardless I thank God for the physical healing that I’ve had and God gets me through the other one day at a time. His grace is sufficient so that when I’m weak He is strong.
God bless

I Had my TL on 7/13/09 which was 6 weeks after giving birth to my 4th child. My period has never been regular and normally the only way to stop it was with birth control. After my 3rd child I was on multiple types of BC just to regulate my period, although I still got pregnant. (Funny huh!) Anyway after I had my TL I bleed for a week then nothing for almost 6 weeks. So I finally get off my period and it was lighter than ever before. I was so happy I thought that finally it will be normal. Then I started bleeding again! It’s an extra heavy flow and mild stomach cramps, but my back feels like it’s breaking! I am just not sure what to do to make it stop. I have only been bleeding for 3 days now, so I don’t want to bother my dr. I just want some hope that it will be normal w/o help from BC. I guess not though after reading all of theses comments.

I was sterilised in 2002, only used natural/barrier methods of contraception for about 15 years prior exceot for 2 months prior to the sterilisation when my doctor said I should avoid getting pregnant before the operation and put me on teh mini pill when my periods were almost nonexistent. My periods went from 3 days of light bleeding with blood loss of about 30 mls every 28 days exactly to 5 days with flooding and in excess of 100mls of blood loss and getting progressively closer together within months of sterilisation not to mention severe pain. I found a combination of herbs, natural progesterone cream and nutritional supplements help regulate my periods. I also did my basal body temperature for a year and didnt ovulate once. prior the op I got pregnant easily, so obviously ovulated regularly.

I gave birth on 2/23/09 and opted ti have a tubal with my c section. I have been bleeding for seven months now, seriously! I have only had a couple od days here and there that I have not bled. Most of the time very heavy bleeding with lots of clotting. I have NEVER had periods like this prior to the tubal and I have had 2 other c sections. Have tried hormones and birth control which have not worked. Finally made an appointment for Novasure. My advice would be to NOT get a tubal. It is not convenient….please find another way for birth control!!!!!!! I should have done taken the initiative to ask questions prior to my decision….i was not informed either by my doctor or my own research about any side effects of the tubal. I am convinced that is what is causing this.I will post a comment after the Novasure!

Well I had my 11 pregnancy which resulted in the birth of our 3rd and final child 11 hrs after she was born I had my tubes done. If so please let me know I am kind of worried!

(185) Kim says:

I’d like to reply to this posting:

Most of the heavy bleeding is a result of coming off synthetic hormone birth control. There is nothing in the function of a tubal ligation that would cause heavy menstrual bleeding, because nothing is removed other than other forms of birth control.

I was not on birth control before or after my tubal so that statement isn’t necessarily true.

(186) Ada says:

I had a TL December 18th of 2008. I did have the normal heavy bleeding following the surgery. I have always had long periods before the surgery lasting (5-7 days), but with minimal cramping. Since the tubal, every one of my periods has began with very painful menstrual cramping with the cramps lasting the first few days of when I start bleeding. I still have long periods but that is the same as before. The cramps are VERY bad. I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance, and rarely even take a Tylenol for a headache, didn’t take the Hydrocodones prescribed following either of my c-sections, or the vicodine that was prescribed after the TL. The menstrual cramps I experience now are bad enough to make me take Ibuprofen 2-3 times a day. I too wish I would have read this posting before I had the tubal done, and also recommend that women make their spouse get fixed instead.

I am glad that I am not the only person with this problem. I had a TL almost six years ago. Shortly after, I would have monthly cycles that were extremely painful. I finally went to a doctor and he basically said not to worry it should soon stop. The pain stoped but other issues started. Just recently I went a whole year with out a cycle. It was exactly a year and i began to bleed not for a few days but for 30 straight days. I then skiped two months and then bled again for 35 days. I went to the doctor and they ran every test they could think of.I even had a sonogram. To my disbelief he said everything was normal. He prescribed me medication to make me stop bleeding. That was successfully for about a week. He said I should be fine and to discontinue taking the meds. I was fine for two days and guess what I am back to bleeding all over again. If the doctor ran test and said I was fine, now what do I do? Surely bleeding for 35+days is not noramal. Can someone help?

(188) Tricia says:

When I met with a ‘male’ physician he told me the only thing that would change would be my inability to have children. I think because he is a man and does not experience what women do he truly doesn’t know. My periods changed drastically. i used to period that lasted 2 at most 3 days, no cramps no mess. Now, i have little cramping but usually some discomfort along with very heavy bleeding. It’s not horrible just was very unexpected. The heavy bleeding has nothing to do with having gone off birth control because I hadn’t used any in several months. I spoke with a female doctor and she informed me that it is normal to have the heavy bleeding though there is not any medical information or reason behind it, this is why doctors make up other excuses.

i am 33, a single mother of 4, had a tubal in 2006 at the same time as a c section. Ever since i can tell when i am due on, i get a constant stabbing pain in my left side. If i sit for a long while ie at work. when i stand i get a unbearable gripping pain, when i do finally have a period the constant pain continues down from my left side through my leg making it difficult to stand or sit. i have complained to my doctor, from my first period after surgery but i was told as many of you have been that it is nothing to worry about it will get better with time. My son is now 3 and the pain, amount of blood and the clots are getting worse, and i am being told the same thing. I am finding really hard to lose weight (yes im dieting and exercising daily) my body blots to almost 2 sizes a week b4 im due until i have finished which is now 7/9 days where it used to be a total of 5. I wish i never had it done. The situation is getting me down, the more i ask the doctor and the more i research it seems that others are having symptoms / in some cases the same problems but there is no firm help. Please If anyone has any positive information/ recommendations that can help me and my family, because i know it is affecting them, i welcome your response.

I had a TL in March 09 after having a csection with my second child. I haven’t had the heavy bleeding like most have, but I have missed 2 periods in a row now. I’ve verified that I’m not pregnant, but continue to have fatigue, mood swings and hot flashes. The worst part has been the crazy weight gain (40lbs since my pregnancy), nothing seems to help take it off. My doctor didn’t inform me of any of this when I signed up for a TL. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone!

I had a tubal ligation 17 years ago after my third child. Got depressed and started gaining weight. Kept going to doctors and saying something didn’t feel right- have had my hormone levels checked and they all say in normal range. Have had heavy periods since then. usually 7 -10 days long. In the last 3 years have reduced to 24 day cycle. No libido. Am now taking antidepressants and way overweight. Prior to my son I was 10 stone now weigh 17!!! Doctors just tell me to exercise doesn’t seem to matter what I eat or how much I exercise weight doesnt shift. Have been severely anemic for past 3 yewars – was vegetarian have now gone back to eating meat but iron levels now worse than before. Have been thinking of getting a Mirena but have read horror stories on that too!! Don’t know what to do next.

(195) Rhonda says:

I have had extremely heavy periods after getting my tubal 2 1/2 years ago. I’ve had to take iron supplements and at one point almost needed a blood transfusion. I am VERY upset that I was specifically told by my doctor that heavy bleeding after a tubal was a myth. No I know first hand it is not. My quality of life has suffered very much. Living with anemia is difficult. You are tired all of the time, have dizziness, headaches, etc. I cannot work out because I am too tired, therefore I am overweight. I cannot diet like I would like to because I cannot restrict a lot of foods (ie, red meat) because I need the iron. So carrying this extra weight after having my son 2 1/2 years ago is DEPRESSING. All I can do is keep taking my iron, and each time my period begins I hope and pray it will not be too horrible.

I had my TL on Monday, November 2nd. My last period was in either March or April of this year and I then went on Implanon, the implantable birth control good for up to 5 years. During my time on Implanon, April-Aug 3, I had no periods, but for the last 2 months on it, I spotted and also for a week after getting it removed on the 3rd of August. I hadn’t had a period since then. Now, 2 days after surgery, I am changing a pad every 2 hours, waking up in a pool of blood ever morning and have bad cramps and shooting pains in my abdomen, which I am assuming is muscle retraction from the procedure. I know it has only been 3 days, now, since my surgery, but reading through these comments, I am terrified to find out what is next. I am hoping that with time, my periods smooth out and all this is just a side effect and is only temporary, and not permanent. If so, I will be forced to go back on the pill to regulate my periods, or even worse, other meds to regulate my blood flow and to reimburse my body for whatever problems will happen to my blood, ie, anemia, etc….Good luck to all! I will be praying daily!

We had 198 women with the same problem. Well I’m 199, but all of us must have to go through that from having that same operation. The last lady Jullian, did good to stay on her birth control, because now she’s going to see lots of bleeding and pain. I have never used so many heavy weight tampons two at a time and it’s been 22 years since mine. But I guess I’ll just bare with it since #178 Ms. Sharri, told us about her historectame. Like she said God help us all. Take perscribed pills for the pains and pray for menopause. JUst think just like it feels like when you’re pregnant, the baby will never get here, but, we have that child no matter how late s-he get here. So one day our RED aunts ant flo or ant Rose will stop visiting. I always worry which ant will pop up but sometimes one comes and the other take over later. Aunt flo is very heavy and wild and ant Rose comes and goes on time. we need little red riding hood so she can skip on away forever out of the forest. I wish all of you ladies the best and sorry for your pains and aunts, and thanks for all of those 198 letters. God speed

I had a TL in April of 2009, when my second son was born. Due to my age (40), I had no desire to go back onto hormonal birth control, and also due to my age, I also knew I was done having children. Before the TL, my cycles were fairly short, averaging about 24 days, and lasted about four or five days, with maybe one day of what I’d consider heavy bleeding. After the TL, they got longer – one cycle was 44 days, long enough that I was concerned and took a pregnancy test – with the bleeding lasting longer and getting heavier. At first, I thought it could be my body readjusting after the birth of my son, but that was almost nine months ago and things are not settling down. This current cycle, I’ve been bleeding for ten days now, with eight of them horribly, horribly heavy. It hasn’t been this bad since I started my cycle as a preteen and was irregular all over the place. I was off hormonal birth control for over three years before the TL, so I don’t think coming off the pill has anything to do with my issues now. Given that I’m now 41, it could be the early stages of menopause starting. All I know is, this bleeding is ridiculous and it’s impacting my life in a very negative way, and it didn’t start until after I had my tubes tied.

Hi, everyone! I had my tubal on 7/12/07 two hours after the birth of my 4th child. I had always had pretty normal periods, and for the year after my tubal while I was breastfeeding they weren’t too bad. Since I stopped nursing I have horrible labor-like cramping (like the mid stages of labor, when you can still comfortably talk but have the desire to bite someones head off lol), heavy, clotting, long periods. Where they used to be aprox. 4 days before they are now 6-9 days. I cramp badly during ovulation and have the most horrible mood swings. The worst part is that I know during the mood swings that I am being grouchy but seem to not be able to stop it. I have talked to others about this and was surprised to find that a lot of women have had problems like this. I wish I had done more research before having this done, some people have no problems after having it done. Others, like those of us who have posted here, have a lot. Hopefully with people coming out and talking about it, these potential side effects will be explained a little better to those considering it. Thanks for reading my lil book!! Good luck to you all!!

This problem started right after i had my tubaligation done and it has not stopped yet. I been on several hermone pills and currently have an IUD in place but still no help from them. I had to abdominal ablations and still no help. I am looking somewhere to get them untied but the price is so costly, so any one have any information to where i can get it done.

I had a tubal in ’06 after the birth of my second child. I was never informed about he possible hormonal side effects, only told to watch for tubal pregnancy. Once my periods started coming back again they were horrible. Bloating cramps breast tenderness 2 weeks before, spotting a week before. It got so bad my doctor put me on the pill once I weaned my son. Now the only thing the pill seems to be doing is making the periods a little lighter. The horrible PMS is still there, and now I’m even experiencing weirder symptoms, like, I feel pregnant, but I’m on the pill and had a TL. That’s a new one! Just found out about PTLS and it seems to describe me to a T. If I had known then what I know now I would have NEVER had my tubes tied EVER.

The pain goes right down my back and legs too!! Unbearable to go through with 4 kids running around!!
None of these problems i had before I got the tubal done! My doctor has told me that this is “normal” and gave me a prescription to take……did not work!!
If I knew then what I know now, I most definately would not have got the tubal ligation done!!

I had my TL in 1998. Like the rest of you, the periods are a nightmare. If it is any consolation, they have gotten a tiny bit lighter the last 3 years. But I know your pain, the tampons, the pads, the awful clots and the accidents. I am pretty regular tho, about every 24 days and she’s back again for at least 5 days. I was also never told of any side effects of a TL. I have complained to my doctors and pretty much have been told to live with it and take up to 9 Ibuprofen a day to break up the clots. That is ridiculous! I have other friends who experienced the same things and one of them told me when I finally get tired of having periods like that, get a hysterectomy, that was what her doctor suggested. I probably have a good 20 years before menopause starts, guess I need to start saving my money, because I don’t know if I want to do this for another couple of decades.

I had my tubal after the birth of my fourth daughter. Since then, I have experienced HEAVY bleeding 8 – 10 days a month. I bleed heavily enough to have caused iron deficient anemia. My doctor told me that this happens about 30% of the time. There are options! Talk to your doctor.

I had my tubal ligation the day my son was born (he was born by c-seaction). My period did not start until four months after he was born. When my cycle started, it came back with a vengeance. Before hand I was wearing a tampon and a pad. Now, I have to change every two hours-sometimes sooner. Why this is, like you I’m trying to find out.

(216) lynn says:

I’ve never bled so much in my life. Got 3 kids. All c-sections, and decided to get a tubal with the last one. What a mistake!! My periods used to be 1 or 2 days and fairly light. Now…. I can bleed through a tampon and a pad in 40 min to 1 hr. My doctor has given me every pill under the sun to try and stop the bleeding. Nothing works. Doctor says its because i just had a baby and has nothing to do with the tubal. Never had this problem before the BTL.

I can’t even leave the house for very long, go for walks or swimming without fear of bleeding through. Might be worth the money to get a reversal instead of waiting 3 – 10 yrs for it to “possibly” go back to normal.

Any thoughts?

(217) Nish says:

I am 40. I had my tubal about 6 yrs. ago. I did it within 6 wks after giving vaginal birth to my 3rd child. Everything was fine until the last few yrs. My periods are very heavy and clumpy for 2 days out of the 5 that I have red flow. Having an “accident” is not uncommon unless I wear a tampon and pad both. It seems I always have some sort of discharge. Brown the wk after and before my period and a few days where it’s thick and white. There is also some kind of smell involved and some periods are very embarrassingly smelly. I have also noticed the time between periods is shortened. I only have a 25 day cycle. I’m tracking each day and plan to visit a gyno to review. Also, I have NEVER been one to PMS and now I get very depressed before I start. I think at this point a prognosis to have a hysterectomy would be welcomed!

(218) Dawn says:

I had a TL at age 39, which was two years after the birth of my 7th child. I had never took birth control pills. I never used to cramp and my periods wer usually average flow for 5 to 6 days. I now have cramping 3 to 4 days before I start. I have 2 to 3 severe days of bleeding with clots (I use super tampons plus heavy flow pads, other wise I get caught at work). When it seems to have stopped I have up to a week of spotting, usual more if I am exercising and being sexually active. My first husband had a vasectomy, I did this now because my new husband is younger then I and only has our one daughter. If at all possible I recommend the husband get done – as he had no issues for ten years after. PS – my doctor did not inform me of any possible side effects – except it isn’t always 100% successful.

I had my TL about 3 months ago after my 6th child via csection. We choose a TL because I am a diabetic and figured we could work on that and not have to worry about another baby. Well that was one of the worst decisions ever. I use to last only 3 to 4 days on my menses and I was light to medium and now I last 9 to 10 days and I am heavy I cramp so bad I have never had to take Midol or anything for cramping and now I do. I also go through 1and half bags of pads I cant stand to move at all cause I bleed and have huge blood clots! I regret ever getting the TL! At least I know its something that alot of you go through I thought I was having a weird reaction or something!

(221) Shannon says:

Hey ladies,
I just wanted to let ya’ll know I got my tubes tied last month. I’ve always had pretty bad periods, 7-9 days with 2 days being pretty heavy. So, when I read all this stuff about tubals making your periods worse, I thought, no way… I’d bleed to death. So, my doctor recommended I have the novasure procedure at the same time. I’m only 3 weeks out from having both procedures so, I can’t say what the final outcome is, but for those of you who are considering a hysterectomy, I would consider this first as an alternative. Just know that you have to REALLY be sure you are done having kids before you have the novasure. In the novasure procedure, your endometrium lining is lasered to almost nothing. Carrying a child after that is almost impossible, and if you DID get pregnant, it could be fatal for the mother and/or baby. Just thought I’d share my two cents.

(223) Kept By Angels says:

Hi to all. I was so excited to find this site because I honestly thought that I was the only one experiencing these effects from have my tubes tied. I had a tubaligation in 2002 after having my fourth and last child. So, I have endured the pain and suffering for eight years. Like some of you I am forced to wear tampons and a pad. My menstrual is for seven straight days, five of which are the heavy days. My cramps are so bad that it is difficult to work during this time of the month. My jobs requires me to sit down most of the time, but things become really messy when I have to stand up and the gushing begins. Prior to having my tubes tied I had very few menstruation accidents. Now, it is better that I keep an extra pair of clothes in the car just in case. This is just not normal. My entire personality changes during this time of the month and my immediate family has noticed the change. I am not considering a hysterectomy, but something has got to give.

June 17, 2010 at 4:50 pm
(224) Stephany says:

These stories are so sad. I feel the pain in all the stories. I also had a TL. My menstrual comes on every 20-25 days and last 4-5 days. After day 3 of my period I am usually fine until the next cycle is about to start. But the two days before my cycle and the first two days of my cycle are pure H..ll for me. The first two days are “extremely painful” and “extremely heavy” so I have to take aleve and use overnight always pads. If I don’t…I’m bedridden. The best advice that I can give my “sisters in pain” is to start taking “2″ aleve pills every “8″ hours starting from 2 days before your period until 2 days after it starts. This will probably only work for those who bleed five days or less and whose cycles come when it should. I can’t imagine what it must be like to bleed and have pain past those 5 days. As for the pads….try to use only name brand if you can afford it because those cheap ones leak with heavy bleeding. Especially at night. If you are as experienced as me with this situation then you know you also have to double up at night to prevent leaks. My period was never painful like this before the TL. Ladies…. All that crap about TL doesn’t cause these problems are not true. I know for a fact it started shortly after the TL. They think that we are so naive that we don’t know our own bodies….come on!!

I also thought about getting a hysterectomy but after going through this surgery and dealing with the results, I am really hesitate to go through with the hysterectomy and deal with a whole new set of problems. I have to agree with someone above who said that for now all I can do is pray for menopause.

For all of those who decide to take the BCPills or IUD after the tubal ….think about it before you hand in the prescription or schedule that procedure. They have so many side effects. Acne-the worst, weight gain, blood clots-the risk of stroke, and the list goes on! It’s not worth it. Our bodies have been through enough and I know we feel desperate to take action sometimes but all those sides effects will just add more depression to your life.

Many people like to say that “we should have thought about all of this before we made the choice of TL”.
1st- Most of us did it for a purpose. 2nd- We were sure that we didn’t want anymore children and 3rd-we didn’t want to keep paying these pharm companies money on BCPills etc.

Hope this info helps…..Hang in there ladies….

I got my tubal ligation right after the c section of my last baby. A big mistake. At the beginning my period wouldn’t come sometimes for 2 months and then I went through a time of spotting daily for a few months. My gyno put me back on the pill. I recently took my self off the of the pill because I thought why have a tubal if I am still on the pill. Well now things have gotten worse cause I had a period for 9 days it stopped for 5 days and now I am on my period again. Something has to give.

Prior to the TL my periods were pretty much like clock work every 28-30 days and the bleeding wasn’t to bad. After TL it has all gone pear shaped. I breast fed my son for 6 months and never had a period, two days after i stopped i got my first one and it was terrible. I had cramping so bad i thought i was in labour again and my scar just throbbed like a knife was being run through it. I then never had another period for 2 months and when it came OMG it was so heavy the pain was terrible. I was having to wear super tampons and pads also. I couldn’t move for bleeding so heavy. Even laying down it would still just run out of me. ANd would last for around 8 days. Then 10-14 days later i start losing brownish coloured stuff or very light clotty blood for another week. Then a month later i got another period same as the last. This has been going on for a few months now and it is truly horrible. It also has affected my partner and mines relationship cause there always continually seems to be something going on wrong down there. I truly wish i had never had the TL done. ok.. has any of your doctors said that the problems that you are experiencing have to do with the tubal ligation or are you looking for an excuse or self-diagnosing? how many of you have you license to practice medicine? look at ALL aspects of your health. it could be the tl, hormones, age, family history.
As I read all these messgaes, i was thinking that you seem to playing the blame game and probably dont know what is going on. there are side effects to everything that has to with medicine. each person is different and has different symptoms, like every pregnancy is different.

(232) Angie says:

In response to the comment above “michelle” saying that these woman are playing the blame game, that’s BS. If the majority of woman have abnormal bleeding after a TL don’t you think common sense says that it’s a common side effect of a TL?
I had a TL after my son was born November 2009. I have had issues with my period since then. I’ve never had heavy bleeding like I have now. Every period is different. One month it’ll be normal, the next month it’ll be so bad I can’t leave the house. Just recently (10 months after my son’s birth) I have had a very heavy period and has gone over 7 days which is not normal for me at all.
I have been searching online for possible reasons as to why. I think it’s good that these ladies shared their experiences with others. It’s not complaining or pointing fingers MICHELLE it’s searching for answers.
I hope that everyone finds relief, and the answers they are looking for.

I had my TL the same day I had my son (c-section) in July 2010. Since then my moods have been all over the place and just a feeling of wanting to rip my hair out. My first period since having him and it’s TERRIBLE. I had what I -thought- were heavy periods before but nothing has prepared me for this. I have never bled like this before; not even right after having either of my two children. In the period of 2 hours, I bled through a tampon and two pads together onto my clothes. The clots are huge. Surprisingly enough, no cramps with it but if I am gonna have periods like this until menopause (and I’m 27 now) then I’m gonna look into Novasure.

I had a tubal ligation in 2000, and had heavy periods every month and spottiing in between they put me on birth control and it would stop for a couple months and then resume until 2004 when my body finally didnt respond to any hormones any more and I had a heavy period and then 2 weeks later I would have an even heavier period practically hemorraging I was losing so much blood that I became severly anemic and weak and the doctors had no idea what was going on!! I knew it was due to my tubal ligation and they refused to believe that this was the problem!! This went on for 2 years and finally I was fed up sick, and weak and couldn’t take it anymore! I asked the doctor for a tubal ligation reversal and they said my insurance would not cover it but would cover a hysterectomy. I was only 27 I didn’t want to have that procedure because it causes problems like early menopause and osteoporosis> Anyways I found a doctor in both Kentucky and Mexico that would do the reversal for less than $6,000 and I was all better no more problems at all whatsoever!!

I had my daughter five years ago via c-section. I also had a tubal ligation at the same time. I experienced paralyzing post partum depression for six weeks. My first period was so heavy that I thought I was hemorrhaging. My periods, which used to be relatively light and lasted no more than 5 days, no go on for about two weeks and are accompanied by severe cramping, huge clots (easily the size of a golf ball) and are so heavy that I go through an ULTRA sized tampon and a thick pad every 45 minutes (I’m not exaggerating). I too have passed large masses of what look like clear or white tissue (thought it was a miscarriage but I was mentrual). At night, I have to wear an ultra sized tampon with a large pad and go through these about every couple of hours. The blood easily passes through the tampon, saturates the pad, and I have ruined so many pieces of clothing. The period is this heavy for at least 7 days, gets a little lighter, then is heavy again the last day. My doc tells me to get on birth control, but that’s why I had my tubes tied. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want birth control.

For the next 11 years my pperiods lasted on average 10 days. In Feb. 2010 I had TL reversal surgey in an attempt to have more children. The most amazing thing happened, my periods went straight to a day and a half flow with a clear end on day 2. Have had no regnancy yet, but I have one tube so the time might be longer for conception, but in the mean time I love my new period

Hi Ladies. I got a TL June 2006, when I was 30, at the time of c-section of my second daughter. I breastfed her and got my first post pregnancy period about 6 months after delivery. Prior to my TL, my periods were an average of 4 days, with NO cramping until just minutes prior to the start of menstrual bleeding. Bleeding was “normal”, and my period was without cramping. Since my TL, my periods are an average of 5 days, with VERY heavy bleending, and days of extremely painful cramping. Every single period I pass blood clots since the TL (NEVER happened prior to TL). I have to use a super plus tampon, and at times it needs to be changed once every hour.
I wish I had done the research on tubal ligations, but I didn’t and now I am trying to save $6,000.00 to have it reversed…and praying that when I get the money that my periods will return to my “normal”. I have researched and found what sounds like a wonderful Tubal reversal clinic, Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Clinic in North Carolina (USA). They only do TR’s….and that is where I am going to be going…just as soon as I can afford it. They have a web site, and I have spoken with a nurse at their clinic.
Good luck to all of us who have made the choice to have tubal ligations in the first place.
And if you are a woman contemplating it……DON’T DO IT.

Bleeding and cramping for 7-10 days and 6 months ago I would bleed for 27 days then start up again a week later for 14 days..have been to the gyne and so far all tests have come back normal. I am going for a biopsy in a week and if that is all normal I am having the NOVASURE procedure done. It is so hard to go out in public when I am afraid I am going to leak everywhere. There are days when it is nothing then WHAM it starts up again. Just want you to know the NOVASURE procedure is out there and from what I have heard this will lessen your period or you may not have one at all. When I told my doctor as most have said he swears it is not because of the TL well never had a problem before. I am only 31 and wish I could get a hysterectomy just to stop the cramping heavy bleeding and the nasty clotting.

had twins via c/s in june so this procedure was pretty much the same as i just recovered from. i actually thought it was a little easier because i didn’t have all the swelling & such from the pregnancy.
my doctor told me that the blood vessels feeding the uterus should be the size of a coffee straw & that mine were the thickness of her pinky. she said no amount of meds would have stopped the bleeding that i was having.
it definately took me 3-4 weeks to start feeling normal again. but having my hyst. done was the best decision i ever made!
i finally got to give away all my pads & tampons, yahooo!!!

I had a T.L. done 4.5 months ago during my 3rd c-section in 3 years. I breast fed my baby for 3.5 months and it has been a month since she stopped breastfeeding and I still have not had my M.C. I have taken pregnancy tests to confirm that there is no ecoptic pregnancy or uterin pregnancy so idk i guess i was just different but every woman responds to the surgery differently.

After reading each story on this blog I realize I am not alone in this battle.I had my tubal ligation done after my fourth daughter was born in 2006,before my periods was predictable and I could always tell when they are coming now I can’t tell when they are coming if at all.In 2010 I had a diagnostic lap done when the doctor found endometriosis and adhesions. He removed what he could but just 3 months later and I am back in the same darn boat.I have to worry about being in public and bleeding everywhere or not being able to get out of bed period.I know its because of my tubal….I regret having it done and I will tell any woman who is even thinking of it to not go through with it for 2 reasons one you will be in so much pain afterwards that you can’t function and two you may find someone down the road who you wish to have kids with (like me)I am due to be married this june of 2011 to a wonderful man who has to sit and watch me cry from the pain.I have NO SEX DRIVE,I am depressed all the time,I cry for no reason,I get really bad migraines, hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, muscle cramps and back aches.I just wish my doctor would listen to me when I tell him what is going on it is my body and I know better than he does what is happening…..I would like to start talking to other women who have these same problems if you would like to talk to me please add me at lilmoma200826@yahoo.com thank you

This is really scary, I need a good form of birth control, but definately dont want a tubal or an iud. But when I explain why to my doc he thinks ive got it all wrong. I have 7 children and get pregnant very easily, so when I asked my doc about a diaphragm hes like “Do u want to have another baby ?” Im like no !” He says “well, we can try this…” Whats a woman to do ? Oh and my husband said he would get fixed with the last baby and well now shes 6 mths old !

Well…I don’t like the fact that I have irregular bleeding, pains from cysts, gained a good 20 lbs, no sex drive, fatigue, my boobs hurt more and there is no answer for why I feel this way because I don’t have insurance so can not afford to get screened for any illness or abnormailities…but at leaset I can sleep easy ,outside of night sweats and cramping, that I will 95% surely not parent another fatherless child, that is unless I get my libido back and have a deadly tubal pregnancy.

For all you other woman, i share this story as well. 3 months after i had my 4th child, at age 24 i decided to get my TL. went through the pre-opt, got a pregnancy check, i was in the clear. so they schedualled my TL. after having my TL i started to notice this thumping in my stomach, what it was i had no clue. So i called my nurse, she said it was nothing that it was normal. weeks later i called again, just being told once again that this was normal. i was on bipolar depression pills… i started gaining weight, but not the normal weight i would on these pills, i gained alot more. finally my husband opted me to get a test, and i did… turned out i was pregnant. that same week i had gone in they told me i was pregnant. Baby # 5 , i couldnt believe it. we eneded up having the baby in November of 2010. my TL was done while i was 13 wks pregnant. after giving birth i had my normal 6 wk checkup, my post partum bleeding was fine. after that 6 wk checkup, that i noticed i got my regular period early by 2 weeks. it was SEVERLY heavy. OMG, cramping not in my abdomen but in my back!!! since then every period has been extremely heavy, i have had to wear tampons and a pad at the same time, ive had sever back pain and just a bit of cramping in my abdomen. i soak through a tampon and pad in 30-45 minutes and bad blood clots, i have been to the ER several times, where they have put me on a 5 day regimin of hormonal pills to stop the bleeding and “reset” my biological clock…phewwww yeah, right! it never worked. and here i am on my period feeling as though all hope is lost, my husband found this page last night. what a miracle to know im not the only one! i woke several times in the night just so i can change, and then this morning i had more clots than actual blood. i am at ends wits and need a miracle!

Well, I’ve read all the comments and it’s nice to know that I’m not alone in some of my symptoms. I had my daughter on 113010 and had a TL at the same time. I thought I was in heaven when I didn’t have a period for 2 months, but now, oh let me tell you….WOW! Every one has been a nightmare…no pain, but heavy bleeding. Oh, and let’s not talk about trying to have sex with my husband….every time I do, I get another period! So, here I am, I’m on my second period of the month because I decided to be intimate with my husband. I’m excited about the idea that we won’t get pregnant again, but I haven’t really gotten to enjoy that feeling because of this bleeding issue. I don’t know….I’m frustrated and tired! Thanks for posting all your situations. It helps to know that I’m not overreacting here. xoxo Cathy

I tell everyone that is think about having a tubal not to. I had my tubal in 2006 after having my son by c-section. My periods were totally different afterwards. Very bad cramps and usually lasting 7 days. Before tubal they lasted about 3-4 days and I never had cramps. My period has gotten a little bit better but it is still extremely heavy and still lasts about a week. Anybody thinking of having a tubal please think twice. I wish I had known this before hand.

I had a TL after my 2nd son back in dec 2009. I used to have really bad periods when I was in junior high, but would only last for 3 or 4 days. I was told by my mother that it was hereditary. She had gone through such pain as well as my granmother as a young adult. They got better when I got on birth control. It regulated my periods so I wouldn’t miss anymore school. Well after 7 years on BC I stoped having my periods and relized it was becuase of prolong use of it. So I got off them and hence my 2 little boys came soon after. I got the TL after right after my second birth. That way I would never have to be put on BC ever agian. Well my periods have never been so bad. They last 2 or more weeks, causing a life change for me. Heavy nasty periods, hormonal issues as well as not being able to have sex with my husband the majority of the month. I regret to have to back on BC, but it’s my only way to regulate my periods once agian and get back to my life. So much for that TL huh?!

Im on the same road as all of you guys! I delivered my third baby by c-section May 20, 2011 and had the TL done right after my baby was delivered. My husband and I decided it was the best choice since we are so young and already have 3 kiddos under the age of 4 to worry about. If I would of known my period was going to change the way it has i would have not done it either. I bled for the whole 30 days after the surgery followed by spotting. Only had about a weeks rest from the bleeding and then I started what i think was my period of the month which was very heavy for 3 days. And now ever since then I’ve been spotting off and on. When Iam not spotting it usually starts again right after intercourse. I sure miss my regular periods that only lasted 3 days with light bleeding every month on the same day. I wish this spotting would go away, its affecting my sex life. And not only that but its also causing me to have mood swings which can not be good for my relationship with my hubby. Iam only 22 and i hate to know Ill probably be this for the rest of my life. I hope we can all find a solution for this bad decision we have made.

Good luck to all of you! And GOD BLESS!!

I gave birth to my daughter on August 16 2010. She was breech so she had to be delivered by csection. I opted for the tubal at the same time because of the fact that she was my 3rd baby and my most complicated pregnancy. My periods before her were normal. Little to no pain and lasted only 3 days. But now they last over a week and are extremely painful. Not to mention really heavy! I have had to switch to the thick overnite pads and have to wear 2 at a time most of the time. And when I got pregnant with her I had not been on any kind of hormonal bc for quite some time. We were actually trying to have us a little Princess because we already had 2 boys. I really wish I would’ve known this before I had the surgery. We wouldve found a different solution.

I had my daughter 6 months ago tomorrow. She was my 3rd csection so I had my tl done at the same time as delivery. I bled for a month after spotted on and off for 2 weeks then had what I thought was the worst period in my life that lasted about 6 days longer then my normal periods. Now I’m on my 4th period since and I can hardly move and am soaking through a pad and super flow tampon both within an hour. Before I never had cramps and my period would be heavier the first day then 3-4 days of light bleeding or spotting. If I knew this I would never have had them do the surgery.

I had my tubal done 5 mths ago, after three kids, now 30 yrs old. it was time. my periods were always irregular even when i was on the pill. so nothing has really changed for me, except about the last 3 months now, after intercourse with my husband i bleed and get bad cramping. dr dosnt think it has anything to do with the tubal. but i have to question that because i never had this before.

I am 24 with 4 children, I had my T.L. 11 months ago, during (c-section) from my last baby. WORST choice I ever made in my life! I have so much regret now with making this decision, I was totally unaware of all the consequences this surgery carried! I was only trying to prevent getting pregnant again and thought this was a good choice! Since my T.L my periods are not the same anymore terrible pain/ cramps/spotting week before period is due heavy/light bleeding that comes and goes. I think women should be well educated before making such a life changing decision, I know I was not aware or told about all the other side effects this surgery carried. I wish I would have seen this info sooner I would have NEVER gone through with it and would have used a different method to prevent pregnancy. I would NEVER recommend a T.L for anyone women, If your considering one please do research and educate yourself before making this huge decision. I was NOT aware of these problems. I wish I could take the surgery back! I am so upset right now. TUBAL LIGATION = BAD IDEA!!!!

I had my TL on July 5th this year after my c-section. I basically have all the same symptoms as everyone else. It makes me livid that doctors refuse to admit that this is a problem. I hardly think numerous sites devoted to it are just a billion coincidences. My friend had to have her uterus taken out because the bleeding was so bad. She became severly anemic and just couldn’t bounce back. Unfortunately, she suffers from some of the symptoms of menopause and she is only in her 30′s. I have made a point to go to websites and post my story in hopes that other women will not have to go through what I’m going through. It’s just sad I thought I was being responsible in assuring that I did not bring any children into the world that I could not afford. Now I get to have a non-stop periods, mood swings, hot flashes, anemia, and nausea.

I have 3 boys. My largest was vaginally at a whopping 10lbs 8.5oz. vaginally. My last boy was 10.3 and taken c-section. All three had birth related issues, so I got a tubal while they had me open. I was anemic durring the pregnancy and after the c-section. Two years later I am still anemic. My mom had to have a hysterectomy, so I don’t know if the tubal caused it or not… Now I have large painful clots, and have anemia around “that time”.

I have A tubal done in Feb 02 after a C section with my 3rd child. The doctor and gyno did not say anything about side effects. Said it was completely safe. Since having it done I have experienced irregular periods that come for a couple of days , disapear for one and then return for a couple more. In feb this year they completely disappeared for 3 months. June they came back and have been more irregular. The last 2 periods I have had have been extremely painful, in the day when bleeding stops I have had extreme contraction like pains that nothing has helped with, then the second I start to bleed again all pain goes – just like childbirth. I am having a pelvic ultrasound tomorrow to try and find out what is happening. If I had of known all this I would NEVER of got it done. Everytime I have gone to the doctors querying this – they say their is nothing wrong, its normal for you. We put our faith in these medical professionals and they play russian roulette with our health. Not good enough

I had a t.l. in dec 2005. I have dealt with heavy periods ever since then. March 2011 I had to have a blood transfusion because I lost half my blood count in two days. I almost bled to death and it is no reason as to why. Doctors said it must have been stress. I also have had other health problems ever since I had my tl done. Does anyone know where or if there is any doctors who would do a reversal due to complications. I have had a lot of medical issues because of my tl. I even am sure I have ptls. Which is another disorder doctors should inform you about which they don’t.
