Getting Pregnant After Depo Provera Shots
Friday January 7, 2005
How long does it take to get pregnant after Depo Provera shots?"
"I've been on the Depo shot for 1 year and 9 months... I haven't had my period the entire time... The last time i got the shot was August 28th 2004. How soon can I get pregnant? I still haven't had my period and the shot ran up on November 2nd. ...could I already be pregnant?..."How long did it take YOU to become pregnant after using the birth control shot?"

It took me 15 months, then I had a miscarriage at 6 1/2 weeks. Then I became pg again at 19 from the “wear off date”, and am now 12 weeks. Good Luck to you!
I was on depo for 12 years and have been off it since february of 2006. It is August and although I have become regaular in my cycle I have not become pregnant.
I have been off the shot now for a little over three months, my doctor put me on birth control pills to help newly regulate my cycle after almost seven years of being on depo. She suggested that I switch to the pill to prepare my body and help speed along the process of getting my natural cycle back into check so that I may plan for children within the next year to two years.
I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about the benefits of this method. Good luck to you and God Bless.
I was on the depo for only 6 months Last shot was Dec of 04 and still not regular with my period, had my period about 6 times in the last 2 years. Very scared and worried Having problems getting pregnant. Will NEVER go on Depo again!
I was on Depo for a year, and the last shot was in April of ‘05 I have only ovulated once since then and that was due to Clomid. It has been a total of 16 months, and still not pregnant. No one warned me that it would take any time at all for my ovulation to return to normal. I would not suggest taking Depo to anyone, I wish I hadn’t taken it, and would NEVER go on it again!!!
Well I had been one the Depo 5 to 6 years last shot was in June 2004 finally got pregnant in July 2005 but miscarred and last month had a chemical preganany..having a real hard time getting pregnant and staying pregnant.. I would suggest not using if u are planning to have anymore kids in the future..
i had my last shot of Depo in june 2006. i still haven’t seen a period yet. i would like to have another baby before i’m to old. does anyone know if its possible to fall pregnant before seen a period?
I would not recommend anyone getting the depo if you plan on having akids in the future. I was on the depo back in feb. ‘04 and my last shot was in nov. ‘04 and i switched to othro tri-cylen lo to help regulate my cycles. i stayed on it for 6 months. and i STILL havent gotten pregnant. Whoever invented the shot needs to take it off the market.
I was on depo for 2 1/2 years. My Husband and I decided to start a family so when my shot was due in oct 2005 i decided not to go back. after about 4 months i finally had a peiod it was horrible i ws hvin a period every othr week for 3months then I finally got regular. it has been a year last month and Im still not pregnant.
i was on the depo for a year. i suppose to go back in november and didnt. i am trying to have a second baby. i think the doctors who tell women about this should tell us about the side effects of our futures. us women who want kids but because of doctors who dont tellthe effects of our chances of kids in the future.
I was on the shot for about 5 years. I went off of it june 2006 but then decided to get another shot. Went back on the shot in September 2006. I finally decided not to get the next shot. it is now Dec 2007 a year after I got the last shot, and still nothing. It is depressing.
I was taking the depo for 2 years and my husband and I decided we wanted to try for a second baby. Its been a year and 1 month and I have not yet seen my period once this whole year. I was never told how long it can take women to get pregnant. If I was told that I would have never taken it to begin with. They did tell me of possible weight gain and those kind of side effects but not the trouble women have after going off of it. I was happy with it while being on it but I will never go back to using the depo until I am done having childeren.
I have been experiencing the same issues. I started taking the “shot” after my son was born in 2001. He will be 6 in February. I stopped taking the shot in 2004 and started using the “patch”. My husband and I want another child; therefore, I stopped using the patch in July of this year. My period became regular right away but we are still not pregnant. I have an appointment with my OB/BYN on 01/08/07 to talk about this issue and to see if it could be more than my being on birth control for 6 years that could be causing me not to get pregnant.
We are ready for that second child and possibly a third. I am 33 and my husband is 30. I really want to have at least one more child before I am 35, prayerfully two!
I will let everyone know what the outcome of my appt.
I was on depo for 4 years I have been off Depo for a year and 6 months now and still not pregnant
my Husband and I would love to have babies but I am so worried I never will..
I was on the shot for about 7 years and got off it and was pregnant after a year. After my first child I did the ring and it took no time at all to get pregnant once we stopped the ring. After the second baby I went back on the shot now stopped in Nov. 06 and will see how long it takes this time.
I have been off the shot since October of 06′ trying to get pregnant. I didn’t start my cycle until Dec 06, but now I can’t stop! Every other week I start again. I’m not sure if I should wait it out or try and go to the doctor? Did you have any luck, Tamara?
Hi all. I was reading your posts, and felt I would leave my 2cents worth for anyone else looking for answers.
I also got the depo shot once, immeadately after having a theraputic abortion. I had no usuaul period or bleeding as I should have after having the abortion, further, I did not get a period or any remote spotting at all after having had the shot for about 8 months. Every month that passed, I felt emotional, and depressive. I worried something was horribly wrong with my physically that I hadn’t had any menstration for such a long period of time. I got the shot mid- May, 2005, and have only in April 2006 ( marking the first day of my last period to calculate due date) did I finally get pregnant again. I am curious if the issues I am having currently (I am over due on my date after having two other healthy children RIGHT ON TIME) If my hormonal imbalance remains and is affecting my having this baby properly. I have had stalled labour now for almost a full month, further, have marginal placenta privia for this pregnancy.. Could all this be long term effects of having had the depo shot in 2005??? I never had any issues previously in either of my full term pregnancies. I just don’t understand why all this has seemed to go so wrong. Depo is the only thing that I had done differently.
Best of luck to all. Don’t take depo anymore– I wont.
Ya know while on depo for 3 1/2yrs I really felt that it was seriously screwing up my reproductive system. My Dr. assured me that everything was fine, but I new in my heart that it wasn’t. It has been a little over 2yrs since my last shot and I still haven’t become pregnant. My cycle sort of regulated on its own after approx. 6mos, but has started to show up really heavy every other week for the past two months. I’m very afraid that I’ll never get a second child. If you are thinking about depo DON’T DO IT! The shit is poison and I wish the originators of it could feel my pain 10 fold over and drop dead! I am so depressed. Oh yeah, it fucked up my bones and muscles too. Don’t fuck wit da shit, I’m tellin you for ya own good.
I took depo thinking i would never want children..my depo ran out on dec19/06 i am still waiting for my period to return mid feb 07,i was on depo for over 2 years and my periods stopped immediately. while this was a nice side effect at the time, i also completely lost my sex drive, anyone else had this problem?? i’m off to the doctor tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do as i am 35 and can;t afford to wait around. reading all of this has made me a bit worried, but i wonder if anyone would be looking and posting here if they were not having problems hence all the negative responses? good lluck all
My last shot was due in October of 2006.. we are trying to conceive and I still haven’t even started my period. But I am having cramping and fatigue.. am I pregnant without getting my period or am I getting ready to start?? Some one help me cause no one knows what I’m experiancing… all my pregnancy tests are coming back negative.. I have never been pregnant before and I dont know what’s going on with my body..
I have two little boys, I went on the depo shot in Oct. ‘05. We wanted to space our next one a little better, and the pill did not work for me. That’s why our boys are only 18 months apart. Well, I have been off of the depo shot since April ‘06, due to issues with it, and have not been on anything for those 10 1/2 mo.. So far, my period is almost non existent, and I am not pregnant. I have been to the doctor and everything checks out, so anyone’s guess is as good as mine. I hope everything goes back to normal soon! It’s driving me crazy! I will never go on the depo shot again nor will I ever suggest it to anyone! I have enough problems with being RH-negative, I did not need this too. Good luck to all of you who are trying to get pregnant!
I have been off the shot since november of 06 and as soon as i ended the shot i got my period. When i was on the shot i never had a period. not even one. I have had regular periods since then and it is now february 19th 2007 and i missed my period and i am pregnant. and it has been exactly 3 months. I didnt like the shot and will never go on it again, because it is true, it can make u infertal. i know a couple who have been off the shot for 5 years and still arnt pregnant so good luck to you all. i wish the best luck to you.
I am in the same boat 2 shots was off in dec and now come feb no period (didnt have period for 6 months) want to get pregnaunt any advise out there please
My depo runs out on 23 march 07, I have been on depo for around 19 months. We would really like another baby.
I was on depo after the both of my first daughter and came off and went straight on pill, when I came off pill my periods went straight back to normal and then when we decided to have another baby, I got pregnant straight away. Don’t worry, it will happen when its meant to happen.
Hi all, I have been on depo for 2 years now and with my next shot due in April 07, my fiance and I are deciding to ry for a baby. I am glad we have decided to stop now as I am worried about taking two years to get pregnant. Our wedding is in Dec 07 so could be a nice gift to us both. I have had a few breakthru bleeds with the depo but not really any true periods, have not gained any weight either that they say 70% of users do. It has been a good form of contraception for us but I am not sure I would want to recommend it to anyone else.
Fingers crossed we get pregnant.
Good luck to you all.
I was on Depo for about 8 years because it was the only way to control my constant bleeding. It was great for me, but I went off Aug 2006 because my husband and I decided to get pregnant. My periods started a month to the day (in Sept) after I would have been due for my next shot, so I had high hopes. It is now February and I have had 2 instances where I could have sworn I was pregnant, but the tests were neg and then followed by EXTREME hemmorhaging right before or at the same time my period was due. I am trying not to get too depressed each time this happens. It’s making my husband very sad. I wonder if it is harder to conceive after depo if you are older… I am 32.
i only had the injection 1ce, it ran out 19 Jan 07 and my husband and i decided to have a baby… i had really light periods while on the shot EVERY 28 days without fail. the next 28 days (after running out) had the same light period… however March came and i didn’t get any at all like i had been. dont know if this is the injection finally stopping my periods, even though its supposed to have run out or if its because im pregnant, too scared to take test…
like you all i hate the injection and will NEVER do it again.
I am planning to come off depo soon and wanted to know what I was up against. This post got me really scared at first, but after reading of those few of you that did get pregnate right away makes me feel much better. I got on depo mostly because of ovarian cysts and am glad I did. For me, getting rid of that pain is well worth having a hard time getting pregnant (we’ll see if I still think that way when my husband and I actually start trying in a few months).
To all of you trying to do this without a doctor or nurses support… please drop into a planned parenthood or other clinic and at least talk to a medical professional. I have the advantage of having an OB/GYN nurse for a mom and some great health coverage. My doctor has advised me to use a condom for the first three months after my shot expires to allow my body to balance my hormones and to help avoid a misscarage the first time I concive. I was also warned from the begining that it takes most women 12 to 16 months to get pregnate after coming off depo. My mom has sugested plenty of intese cardio workouts (like running and swimming). Intense cardio workouts will boost matabolism and can help your body regenerate faster. **Please note that this is a sugestion my mom had for me and that I am already in decent physical shape. I don’t want to be reposible for any heart attacks out there : )
-Good luck to all and don’t give up hope
I have been on birth control since 15 to regulate my cycle. Before I got married in 03 I began taking the shot. My husband and I decided to try for kids, and my last shot would have been due in Aug. 06. It took until Feb. to begin getting regular cycles, which I haven’t had without the pill, since early high school and still have not gotten pregnant. I am worried too after reading all these. I hope being on birth control for so long doesn’t deter my getting pregnant either. Good luck to everyone!
I was on Depo for 1 year exactly. I started spotting the day after I was due for another shot. Now I feel pregnant but the tests are coming back negative. I was told its too soon to tell if I’m pregnant but it could also be a hormonal imbalance. Waiting to find out is the scary part!
Hi Ladies, I also was on the shot for close to 8 yrs i had one son which will be 13yrs next month so its been a while for me. my last shot was 10/20/05 i got 6 regular periods then stopped all of the sudden so my OBGYN has me on provera pills to help me get regular periods kind of like a wake up call for my ovaries i do cramp and have spotted but he says anything is good and i can defenitely feel myself ovulating! so dont give up i have a sister in law that has been pregnant 3 times! and lost them all it is 1yr today of the baby’s passing and she was 8months pregnant. and yes she is pregnant again cause she is not willing to give up so i think none of us should either!! good luck to all of you……
HI! I recieved 1 Depo shot,it stopped my period however after it ran out in Dec.’06. I bleed from the middle of Dec. to the beginning of Feb.I haven’t had a period this month. I want to get pregnant again but without having a cycle I don’t know if I can.
I was on the shot for 1 year exactly, and been off of it for 1 year this past feb. I had some slight bleeding when my period would have been due thru-out the 12 months on it, but no problems. My Fiance and I would really like to have a child, please pray that God would bless us, and forgive the ignorant for not telling us the consequences for using this form of contreceptive.
I was ill informed by my doctor about the possible side effects of depo and after taking it for 1 year and suffering throughout the course i stopped taking it in Jan 06, it wasn’t until October that i got my periods back, i have had them every other week since then. My husband and I are trying to get pregant in hindsight and now having better knowledge of the side effects i would have never gone on depo. Please pray for us. All i can stress is to make sure that you discuss it properly with your doctor and do your own research. I was young and stupid to just assume that they knew what was best for me.
I started on Depo when my daughter was born in Mar 05, I had my last shot in June 06, and am Now off everything completely.
It took me until Sep 06 to get my periods back, but they became very irregular, only the last 2 months have I notice some regularity starting to form, so hopefully maybe a baby???
I swear there should be some kind of a group formed for women who have used depo and have been ill informed about it’s side effects. If had known what it did, there is no way in hell I would have taken it. I wish in some ways i could sue my Doctor for negligence, but what will that achieve?? nothing. I wont help me get pregnant any sooner, it just sucks that we had to all go through this shit to find out the hard way.
So for all of you out there considering this as a contraceptive DONT!!!!
Started depo in August 1995. I had my last injection November 2003. Had my first period December 2004. Finally got pregnant May 2005, ended in miscarriage. Pregnant again in August 2005, ended in miscarriage. It is now April 2007 and I’m five weeks pregnant. Fingers crossed.
I was on depo for 10 years, stopped because I had gone into early menopause, had moderate ostepenia, NO sex drive, horrible sallow skin, etc, etc. All of these physical symptoms were directly related to the depo. I have been off the depo for 15 months and have had maybe 3 periods in that time frame. Would love to get pregnant; but, am very afraid that my 10 years with depo may have ruined any chance for that. I have been calling my doctor to see if she will run fertility labs - but, perhaps I am naive - since I am just assuming these tests would be a quick answer to the “can I even get pregnant” question. So far, I haven’t even be able to get her to call me back on this….perhaps I should go to a new doctor? Sorry for the rambling - seems like we are all in the same boat - it’s reassuring to hear some success stories; but there seems to be a lot more disappointment than success. Good luck to all of us!!
I had been on depo for 5 years, i came of november 05, realised after that the bad migraines, mood swings i had, must of been because of injection, periods took 12 months to get back to normal, still feel tired, sore breasts, no pregnancy, regrets of having injection
I was on depo for 11 years - last shot was 6/06. During the last 11 years my doctor had me come off it every year and a half to two years for a few months until my cycle regulated again. I’ve been “regular” since 10/06. When on the shot I had no period or other adverse side affects. I feel the shot did exactly what I wanted. I did not get pregnant. I have been thrilled with it. I do have some mixed emotions now that my husband & I are ready to start a family. I, too, am on the emotional monthly roller coaster of hoping “this is the month”. I am in the medical field & I was warned it could be difficult to get pregnant. What I didn’t realize was how emotional it would be. I don’t feel as I can blaim the shot or the manufacture. It did what was advertised. Not having a period & not getting pregnant before we were ready was important. I think the shot is a terrific birth control (especially if you’re like me & never remember to take a pill)- just a word of caution if you may be wanting a family a year or two from now.
I was on depo for 9 years(once a year period) untill spring 06 switched to pills for a couple months with a period every other month. I’m so glad and sad also that I’m not the only one. Good luck to everyone.
I was on depo for 2 years! I got my last shot april 06 I got pregnant nov. 06!!! I didn’t thnk I could get pregnant that fast. I had an abortion now I am back on the shot and I thnk I might be pregnant again!
I had been on Depo for 18 months and have been off for a month now. I was hoping to get pregenant soon, but after reading all the comments, my excitement has turned to sadness. If I had known the after-affect of Depo, I would have never gone on it And I will never again. Screw all the doctors who didn’t tell us!
Wishing all the best of luck.

I’ve been on the depo for 1 1/2 year. no periods, no weight gain. I have been on it 3 times: 1 as teen, 1 as with last marriage & now this marriage. I did spot the 1st 6 mos but afterwards, nothing. it’s been great. Blessings 2 U. o I’m 30.
I only had two shots after a friend recommended it to me. I have two kids and we decided I would stop taking the shot to try for # 3. I also stopped b/c I was having SEVERE mood swings exactly 1 month after each shot. It has been only 1 month since the shot wore off and I am so sad to see that it could be a long while before I could get pregnant. I DO NOT recommend the shot for anyone.
hello all i am sorry to read all of this bad @#$% about depo. i got the shot back when i was 16 and got off @ 19 and i am now 24 with not kids. the whole time i was on the spot i didn’t have a PERIOD . i want to have a child really bad i fear i will never have a baby. i still don’t get a normal PERIOD i see it maybe 4 times a year. i need some help!
Hi.. I got on the depo Right after my daughter was born who is now healthy beautiful and 22 months! Ive had horrible side effects about the last year, Miagrain headaches, 13 lbs weight gain in 3 months, mood swings, hot flashes, always tired, body aches can never ever sleep though, acne, its been horrible! I was supossed to get my shot again May 16th But didnt We want another baby (before she gets to spoiled from being an only child and she needs someone to play with before shes too old) So i didnt get it. So far I still havent had any bleeding which i usually spot about 2 weeks before im supossed to get it, sitll havent almost a month late and havent had any signs of even needing it. After all this and the fact I had cervical cancer and needed a small part of my cervix removed in Feburary of this year, Im scared i wont be able to have another baby! Anyone that was pregnant still pregnant or had a sucessful pregnancy yet? —– Also my 2 cents on this lil girls on here talking about ” got an abortion” If you wanna play big girl games and do big girl things then step up and be a big girl! You all out there killin ur helpless babies for what? You spread your legs right? Let your babies breathe! Your murdering helpless babies. Stop being lil whores and take care of them even if its not the “cool thing to do” when your to young to even know its murdering a living BABY! All the people out there that want babies and deserve babies but cant have them and your killing yours? Adoption not only saves babies but helps Wonderful want to be mothers and fathers to have the babies they need! AND ITS FREE! So stop spreading your legs and let your babies live atleast give them to someone that wants them instead of murdering them! — TO ALL THOSE WHO WANT BABIES AND ARE PREGNANT NOW GOOD LUCK GOD BLESS AND BEST WISHES!
I was on the depo shot for I think almost three years, from when I was 15. I’m now 20. I was also on the pill, very bad menstration. Dr. said it was the only option left for me since the pill had no effect really. I lost my health insurance, so no more shot. I ran out around then end of may/beginning of June in 2007. I just wanted to say that though all of this is quite concerning, and as sad as it is, miscarriages are quite common. I don’t know a single friend that has been pregnant and hasn’t had a miscarriage. Also, if you do have a history of menstration problems, this can complicate conception and pregnancy. I’ve also heard from many that it isn’t uncommon not to see pregnancy with in the first year after discontinuing the depo. Let us not forget what a true miracle a healthy pregancy is. We should create a rally, asking the government or the company questions. I’m starting to wonder if the results of the test were confounded by scretive hormone counceling for fertililty. I haven’t read any official studies with the results that seem quite apparent as they do here.
i was taking depo in 2004 but was on and of but last year 2006 when i had to go and get the other shot but decided not to beace me and my husband were trying to have a baby i was ver sad to be onform that about trying for sometime i can’t get pregnant depo messes up everything inside your ovaries freeze and dont want function well anymore dont try depo is something i did wrong and now im paying the consequenses and now to have a baby it will take a very long time to get pregnant and im very mad for depo to exsist..
I have been on the depo every since I had my daughter in April of 2005. I thought it would be the easiest for me and I would return to normal fertility when I decided to get off. I took my shot on time. I lost my insurance so I had to start going to the county health dept where the shot was free. I took the last one in July 06′. Me and my husband wanted to try to have another child so I decided not to take my next one that was scheduled in Oct. 06. We tried constantly until Feb. 07, and I decided to get back on after not getting pregnant. I just recently missed my appt. for the shot in May 07′ and I just started a cycle this past Tuesday. I will not get back on the shot ever again. I didn’t know that it can make you infertile and my doc. never told me. I am only 22 (my husband 25), and I know we have time but it seems like its taking and will continue to take forever. Good luck to all who are trying. Keep the faith.
hi my last needle was in july/06 was due for my next needle early oct/06. we are now aug/07 still have had no period just spotted for 4 days last month. I have all the symptems of pregnancy put the test keep come out negative. I’m naseasu, fatigue, i had tender breast, no period and i cant eat the food that i love it makes me sick. everyone around me think i’m pregnant. my question is can you get pregnant without a period.and why wont it show on pregnancy test? how long should it take to get a period? I’ve only been on the needle for 2and half years.PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME
I have been debating whether or not to go back and get my next shot, which is due on August 10, but after hearing all these horrible stories after the shot I am not going back. I want another baby and if it can take years to get pregnant again then I better get off it now!
Hi all, I’ve only had the shot once immediately after an abortion. This was 18th January 07. We decided not to get my next shot which ws due in April 07 as it was a better time for us to try again. I got what i thought was my period on 27th April 07 but never stopped, eventually the Dr put me on Tranexamic pills and fingers crossed the bleeding has stopped. Still not preg tho!! Anybody had anythin similar?
i have been on birth control for 7 years.depo 6 out of the 7. i stopped taking the shot around january 07 when my boyfriend cam back from overseas. were about to get married and want to have kids sum day. but since i hav been off the shot i have not had any sex drive at all. can any one help me. im only 21 you would think i would be like a rabbit. but i seriously barely even have thoughts. help me
I was on depo for 9 months adn it has been over a year since my last shot! This shot put me thru “hell and back” and I have been trying to get pregnant since I started having my periods regularly 2 months after my last shot wore off… So, even after trying for about 9 to 10 months, and using all kinds of fertility tests, im still not pregnant… I WILL NEVER GO BACK ON DEPO! I hope that this helps!
Last shot 1/2007. Shot “wore” off 3/2007. First period 7/2007 (very weak). Second period 8/2007 (now, weak)
My husband and I plan on getting pregnant NEXT (2008) year. I knew it took time to have the drug wear off. Research shows 12-18 months. I am surprised my periods came back (albeit weak) only 4 months after. But I also read somewhere that cardio exercise helps the removal of the drug in the body, because the injection is an intra-muscular. It tends to stay in the muscles and fat for awhile. Lots of running (8-12 miles/week) and lots of water (2 litres). No crazy side effects, except extremely tender breasts. But I figure it’s all about hormones returning to normal. I am also realistic that it may take up to a year for us to get pregnant. The window to get pregant is really small. So really, I am allotting myself 3 years after the stopping of my depo shot. Took Depo for 4 years and had side effects of some weight and spotting, but all stuff I knew from research.
To those who say they might be pregnant, but their tests have been negative. There’s research out there that the progesterone from the Depo lingering in the body causes negatives on home pregnancy tests. Your best bet is to go and get a blood test at the doctor’s office.
i waz on the depo 4 like 4 years off n on.4 the last 4 years i haven’t had 1 period.myi last shot waz n aug06 now it’z aug07 n mi period came on n june n july both months 4 like 4 days now it’z aug n mi period hasn’t came on yet but i’m havin sllight crampin az if mi period iz about 2 start me n mi boyfriend haz been trynin 2 have a baby 4 the past 3 months n no luck so far.Depo waz good n then it waz bad it does it’z job n then i does damage.
I took the shot in June ‘06 and never got it again. It made my period turn into a thick brown discharge, and agravated my headaches. I then went on the pill in March ‘07 and stopped in June. My period regulated just recently, and I haven’t been able to get pregnant yet. Does anyone know if you can get your period and not ovulate? I’ll never get the shot again, I wouldn’t reccomend it if you want children or if you don’t like hormonal changes screwing with your everyday life.
I was on the depo for about 6-7 years and loved the freedom it gave me, at the time. My last shot was april 06 and I have been trying to get pregnant since. My periods returned feb 07 (my periods are fairly regular and my sex drive is much more incressed as well(another side affect the doc’s don’t tell you)) However I am still not pregnant.
I thought Depo was good at the time but maybe not now. I won’t ever used it again.
Good luck to every one and keep smiling
i was on the depo shot for four years. my last shot was in may o7. i started bleeding soon after. its now september and i’m STILL BLEEDING!!! i heard that you may bleed for 2 months but come on!!! four months!! ugh….my breast are sooo sore and i have cramps all the time. and just when i think its about to end it gets heavy again. i want to have a baby soon and am hoping i start to regulate. i will NEVER go back on depo or any other kind of birth control again. this seriously tramatized me. i hope you all have better luck in the future
I was on the depo shot for 2 years after having my son. I was told when i got on the shot that I would be able to become pregnant in 0-3 months after going off of it. My last shot was august of 06, I finally menstrated in in August of 07 and it was the worst period I have ever had. It was worse than the bleeding after giving birth. I am married and would like to have another child with my husband. I too am afraid I may never get pregnant. I too, had a very decreased sex drive while I was on the shot. Now, finally in June of 07 it came back. ITS FUNNY HOW THEY DONT TELL YOU ALL THIS WHEN YOU SIGN THE PAPERS. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND DEPRESSING FOR WOMEN. THEY SHOULD TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET.
I have been on the shot for 10 years off and on! I went on it when I was 14 because my parents were scared I would have a baby at a young age. I am now 24. I would go off by myself every year or two b/c of the moodiness and the weight gain. Then I would get my period and/or a pregnancy scare. I never wanted children before, due to career goals. I have a wonderful and loving man in my life now who wants more than anything to have a baby of his own. I do to now! I think it would be the best thing for me! I am sooooo scared that I will not be able to get pregnant! The last time I recieved the shot was Jan 29th, 2007. Please dear Lord don’t let me be infertile! I want this so bad! P.s. Both my sisters were on the Depo at some point in their lives. One has 4 beautiful healthy boys at the age of 25, and the other has two boys, but has had 1 miscarrage and another still birth. I don’t know what to think!
My daughter had 3 shots. The last one in Dec 06. She had break thru bleeding the whole time, weight gain, moodiness, etc. She had all the bad side effects. She never went back for the March shot and has not stopped spotting in almost 11 months, tried estrogen in the spring to get her cycles back to normal, continued bleeding, has now had a D&C and hystroplasty all b/c of the shots and is still spotting. Wants more than anything to get pregnant but the Doc says she’s not producing enough hormones to ovulate. She’s had no periods, just bleeding for almost a year now. Has anyone had all the bleeding as a side effect? How long? and please someone tell me it does get back to normal and that they got pregnant. I’m really worried about my daughter, she’s young & married, and has wanted children since she was 14 years old, but we encouraged her to go to college, so at 18 and married, she took 9 months worth of shots, thinking about school. She decided school wasn’t for her and now wants to start a family more than anything. She already has some baby stuff. I’m worried about her greatly. Does anyone have anything encouraging to say?
I started taking the depo shot in September 2005 after I had a second abortion(which I am not proud of but for the purpose of this post I thought I should include.) I stopped taking the shot in June 2006 after gaining 70 pounds in that short amount of time. My husband and I desperately want to have a baby. Right after I stopped taking the shot, I bled for almost 3 weeks straight. Since then, I have had only 2 recent periods (one in May 07 and one in June 07). I have not had any other period since I stopped the shot. My doctors say nothing is wrong, that it just takes time to get pregnant, but both times I was pregnant before took less that 3 weeks. I am so afraid that I have done something terrible to cause me to not be able to have children. I have always wanted babies, and I break down every time I think about the fact that I may be the reason I cannot conceive. If anybody has any advice or opinions PLEASE let me know what worked for you. I am soooo desperate I don’t know what to do.
back again! still with no good news, still not pregnant stressing out, my eldest is 7, 8 next year the older he gets the more i want another. i finally plucked up the courage to go to my family planning clinic to find out why i had no success. the nurse told me i am healthy and young, i had no problems concieving my 2 children so there is no reason why i should fall pregnant again. i told her my concerns about the injection, but assure me none of this relates to the side effects. what a load of C**p, well i’ll just keep on trying. good luck to all of u.
I have not started to ovulate after depo (my last shot was in January of 2007). I have talked with three physicians and it sounds like for some women it can take up to two years after the last shot wore off to get pregnant, i.e. I might not start to ovulate until April of 2009. I always had irregular periods and I was told that it could take me even longer because of that. I hate to sugguest hormonal birth control after my experience with depo but I heard that just taking a few months of the pill can really help regulate hormone levels after depo completely screws them up. That is not a guarantee that ovulation will return after going off the pill but it could help. I really trust the physician who told me that. I hope that helps anyone.
Have anyone try one of those ovaltion kit where it tell you you’re ovating or not. I have try those and it’s stated that i’m ovaliting but no sign of getting pregnant.
My Depo experience is very similar to the original post from the this site. I let my Depo run out in August of 05′, and skipped my Nov shot that year. Here we are folks… almost Oct of 07 and nothing yet. For the most part I have normal periods, and ovulation. My husband doesn’t have the usual military job, so the stress from his “whereabouts” sometimes screws up my PD, but that’s normal I know. I can’t see why I’m not pregnant yet, we’ve been trying for going on two years. Thank God we have a healthy, happy four year old, but man do we hear it from her about a little brother/sister. We’re now considering adoption.
I took my last depo shot in June 2005 and still no luck getting pregnant. I loved the shot while I was on it but had a really hard time when I got off. I bled for 4 months straight. I have regular cycles now and like everyone else, feel nauseuos and have pregnancy symptoms but tests come out negative. It is comfortimg to know that there are so many of us out there! Good luck to all and hopefully someone can post a message when it finally happens!
I had my first son in 2001 and I was on the depo then for about two years which made me lose alot of weight. Afterwards I immediatley got pregnant but it was an etopic pregnancy I have always been very fertile but again about a yr ago I started the shot got 3 shots so for nine months I had it last shot was in April 07 in August I had a lot of spotting and a regular period somewhat!! But it is now Oct 07 we have been having sex like crazy!! Still no baby every test has came back negative even the most recent one yesterday I don’t know what to do anymore. Last week my breast were real tender I talked ot my doctor and she said that maybe I was about to come on my period still no period but I am having alot of yeast infections ans bacteria infections!! I don’t know how much longer to wait this is nerve racking nerver had the problem before and I want another child me and my fiancee are trying like crazy if I knew the second time around was going to be like this I would not have gotten it at all!! I think a lawsuit should be brought against the people who make Depo because some women as I was reading the blogs are having longer delays and some are not getting pregnant at all after years!! something needs to be done.
I’m 22 yrs old. On the shot in Feb. 07 didn’t go get my shot afterward but instead took the pills. Period came irregularly but then this month haven’t come yet. Went for a pregnacy test at the clinic came back negative.. Have it happen to anyone where they have almost regular period and then no period for a month or long….
All these comments left me crying. Im so mad and emotional right now. How can they give anyone the shot without warning about the possible delay or impossibility of becoming pregnant again? What can we do about this? We need to find a way to warn other potential victims. Any ideas? I have only been off the shot and trying to conceive for 4 months now, but how do I deal with the disappointment of maybe never again having a child?
Your comments have helped me a great deal and I thank all of you. I have 2 boys already and last year my husband and I decided to try for another baby. I was on the depo for 2 1/2 yrs and I had my last shot in Sept. of 06 and stopped getting my period. In feb. I started to get my period again. Since then I have had regular periods and with talking to my doctor she said as long as I have been getting a regular period for at least 6 months I should be ovulating. Well here we are end of oct. of 07 and still no luck. When i was on the depo shot it took me like 5 months and I stopped getting my period and my sex drive was next to nothing. I do advise women who want to go on the depo shot to take it only after reading the side effects because if you don’t mind not getting your period but lose you sex drive and have a hell of a time getting pregnant then go for it. Well I wish you all the best of luck. God bless you and your bellies.
Hi i was on depo provera for 4 years went of it in june 07 and its nearly nov07 and my period is back to normal i have a 28 day cycle with occasional spotting during the month which is why i went on depo in the first place. I never got a period well on it. How long you take to get pregnant depends on your body i know people that have fallen pregnant a week or two after going off it, everyones bodys will balance out differently, detox your body and go to a natropath and get them to give you stuff to balance your hormones out. Thats why its not working because you still have to much progesteron in your body. You cant blame the doctor you have to realise that not getting your period or something that stops you ovulating is going to screw your body up a little bit.
Hey all, I took depo in October 2006 to help me with really painful periods just before I got married in December. Never went on it again and my period was weird at first but at least no pain then it went back to being really painful last month(September). It is now October 2007 and I have had a pregnancy test that’s positive. If i’m really pregnant could it be an etopic pregancy? it that a side effect?
Hi i came off the shot in May 07, I started using it in Jan 06 for the 1st time, I had been using cilest pill beforehand. I had my 1st period in September 07 which lasted 6 days then I spotted for a day and a half 15 days after the start of my period. I am now just over a week late. I am getting pregnancy symptoms but I have done 2 tests which came back negative. I already have 2 sons but me and my partner want another child.
When i concieved my eldest son the tests came back negative for the 1st few weeks, my GP even sent me for a scan which didn’t confirm the pregnancy but I was around 5 weeks pregnant at the time. I eventually had a postitve test result and had my dating scan which confirmed i was 13 weeks pregnant. I am worried that there might be something wrong with my body after reading some of the posts on here. I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar?
Hi, I started the Depo injections after the birth of my daughter in April 2006. After deciding with my partner to try for another baby I didn’t go for my last injection due August 2007. I have since had a bit of slight bleeding but not a period. After reading other peoples comments I feel very concerned about getting pregnant again. However it took a friend of mine 2 years to concieve after coming off depo so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel for us all.
hey everybody..im so upset after reading all these comments!! they should ban the shot for women who havent have kids..they make it sound so easy that we will be okay.i took my last shot in aug 07 i was due for another one in oct 07 i skpped it!! i dont want to got through gaining weight and deppression!! but no i wana be prego!! and it suks trying!!
i hope everyone else does though…
Hi everyone. I am a little torn with all the comments and being a female I won’t allow it to get the best of me.
I have several comments about all this. First of all, if you read all of the comments at once like I did, you will notice a pattern. Ladies, I don’t mean for this to be rude…but the ones who did their own research outside of the doctor’s office were happy with their results and understood that it will take a year to 18 months before getting normal again.
A lot of you have been on the shot for 6+ years. Doing anything to your body for that long of a time frame is going to have a down time for your body to adjust. I am reading a lot of the comments saying you stopped taking it six months ago and don’t know why you are pregnant. I am not discouraging you, just be realistic. If you gain 70 pounds over the course of 2 years, guess what, it isn’t going to come off in the course of 4 months. You have to work at it. You have to be diligent and patient, it will take time, hell it took you two years to put it on.
Reality is that when you take depo for an extended period, it’s going to take a year or more to regulate your body. I am doing a lot of research, I am not a doctor of health professional. I want to have another baby within the next few years so I am thinking of not taking my next shot in Dec. I know there will be a transition period.
Depo does exactly what it says. My body is very sensitive so anything estrogen based does not benefit me. I have horrible side effects. I loved having Norplant but after the 5 years of it being in, I could not find another doctor to put in another set. There is a new one coming out which I am excited for in the future. I know with my body I need to do a progesterine based birth control. The more you know about your body the better off you are.
With that being said, look at the other factors you ladies are talking about, setting aside the unrealistic goal and hope of getting pregnant within 6 months of being off of it. If you have a child and then you were on it for 6+ years, you are a lot older than when you conceived your first child. I was reading the other day on www.whattoexpect.com about the percentages of getting pregnant within a year’s time frame based on age. Ladies, we are getting older. Our bodies change.
I am not looking at the site so I may be a number or two off, but it’s very close to the following numbers.
For a woman age 20-25 without other complications (thyroid, irregular bleeding, etc.) she has an 86% chance of conceiving in a year time frame having normal sex.
A woman 25-29 has a 78% chance. A woman from 30-34 has a 68% chance (which I fall in this category now) and a woman 35 or older has a little over 50% chance. That’s a huge factor aside from the birth control. I am not discounting what you believe may have happened or be permenant side effects, I am just bringing my own knowledge and insight into this with the patterns I see.
To those of you desiring to have a baby, I wish you the best of luck and will add you to my prayers tonight. I am there with you. I have the “urgency” issue of knowing that I am now 31 and by stopping now, it will be a possibility that a realistic “try to get pregnant” will not be for another year to year in a half. My son is 10 now. It wasn’t easy for me to conceive him then either. I was told there was a small 2-3 month window in which I could have possibly gotten pregnant with my thyroid levels being so out of range. They have sense been in range with the help of an amazing doctor….who was the only one out of 7 years of searching who gave enough to be a person with research skills versus an idiot who holds a piece of paper and thinks he knows your body better than you do. (Sorry, another story) But I feel for you, I really do. I know how overpowering and almost deafening that desire to have a baby can be.
But also know, that the same things you women are saying, trying for a year and not pregnant, is very common among women who haven’t had the shot ever. Being young is definately a huge benefit, but there are so many factors. So please don’t get discouraged and blame it all on the shot. Many women do get pregnant after the shot. Some after missing their next shot due to money restraints. When I took the first shot in January of this year there were 4 of us there. All 3 of the women there complained of weight gain and said that they missed their next appointment by 3 or 4 weeks and they were pregnant.
Everyone’s body is different, everyone is going to have a different process time in returning your body back to normal. And maybe with age differences, your body may return to a “normal” range for your age now, now the way it was before you began the shot many years ago. Just like my girlfriend, same age, same activity level, etc. That chica can eat 10 times what your husband does and the bitch is skinny as a rail. I eat like a bird most times and if I look at piece of chocolate it goes straight to my ass. lol. You are no different in this aspect, everyone is unique and will react different.
For those of you considering the shot, please don’t let this deter you, only let it be a lesson in your research that it is a very real possibility that it could take you 2 years of being off the shot before your body is functioning with a normal cycle and ovulating. once you acheive that, then your “trying” begins.
However, I hate having a period and have loved the fact that I don’t have them on depo. I don’t like pills and I don’t remember to take them, plus any estrogen based bc I get severe migrains. Depo has been great for me and for my friends that take it. I have read a tremendous amount on the subject and even after reading all of this am still confident and do not regret taking it. I am aware of what I want in my future and how to properly plan for it.
Best of luck to all of you ladies. God Bless.
HI there,
I posted on March 4. stressed and worried about not being pregnant. I am now 14 weeks pregant and all looks good on our first scan….. I am getting married in 11 days time and my hubby to be and I are looking fwd to starting our life as a family.
TO ALL OF YOU out there who are tyring to concieve and are dying to have a child. I wish you all the best, never give up, and I hope that one day soon you are blessed with the gift of life.
Take care

Hello Ladies,
I first tried the shot in 2003 after having my first child. I took it once in september of 2003 and never took it again due to insurance reasons. I became pregnant in November but lost the child in February of 2004. In 2005 I had a IUS put in called Marena. I liked the flexabily and the periods were beter as I didnt have cramps anymore. It took away my sex drive, also I kept getting reoccurring BV and yeast infections. I had it removed in May 2007. I recieved the shot August 21, 2007. My hair fell out so bad and I shed like a long hair dog, also my skin is a mess. Its Dec. 2007 I was due in Novemember 2007. I havent taken my second shot. I have pregnancy symptoms but negative results. Im not looking to concieve, but my fiance and I would welcome another child with loving arms. I got pregnant rather quckly so thats why I suspect a pregnancy now.
i was on the depo for 9 months(3 shots) just came off in september and now it’s december and no period! I’m wrried as i wanna have another baby. can anyone advise me on how long it takes? i’m worried. or can i fall preg without having my period..?
thanks
I took the shot once in Jan. ‘07. I never took it again because of the same reasons listed above (i.e. weight gain, moodiness, etc.). I wasn’t having my period so I went to my doctor and she gave me high dosage Provera, which I took for ten days (and still no period). Then I took it two months later for ten days and started a normal period. I’m due to have another period soon. My only words of caution about Provera are that it makes you extremely sensetive. It’s a drug they give to women in menopause, so the estrogen levels are high, I became extremely weepy and had hot flashes… but I’m glad I did it. Hopefully I get my period on time within the next week. Good luck to you all.
I began taking birth control at fourteen (due to ovarian cysts’), and stopped at eighteen. The first two years I was taking pill form and the last two being depo. I was never told of the possible side effects that depo has on reproduction. I am currently engaged and my husband to be and myself have talked about having children within the next few years. I took my last shot in 9/06 and finally began regular cycles in 7/07. After reading the comments I’m terrified that I won’t be able to have children and raise a family.
I believe that one of the biggest “bonuses” of the depo shot that is most appealing to teens/young women is the lack of a period. And while that may be a good thing for most young women at this point in time, you may want to think about the long-term consequences.
I would urge anyone who is considering the depo shot to stay far far away!
I started taking the shot when I was 17. I was on it for 7 years and got the last shot in February 2006, I started on Ortho-Low pills. I took them for three months and stopped taking them in April 2006 because I was getting married in June 2006 and we wanted to start trying right away. I was pregnant in less than two weeks. I got back on the shot in March of this year after having my daughter, I missed my shot that I was supposed to have on November 26th by mistake, and am pregnant now. I have never had any side effects from the shot - no weight gain, decreased sex drive, or spotting between shots. I haven’t had periods except for two of the three months I was on the pill. They say that going off the shot and onto a birth control pill a year before planning to have children will help regulate your cycles. I have always had good experiences.
Hello my sweet sisters:
I’m sorry everyone is going through this heartache. I had the depo shot only once in dec ‘06… needless to say I’m still waiting to get pregnant. I would advise anyone considering depo to check other options. It was very trying being on depo. I had non-stop bleeding for 40 days, not to mention pregnancy symptoms. Please consider another form of birth control. The best form of birth control I’ve found is monitoring your cycle. Wishing everyone happy and healthy pregnancies soon.
i have used the depo -i just went off the depo a while ago. i did not have my shot in october 07. i still have not had a persoid. my dr told me it could take up to 9 months to have a period again and to get pregnant.People have been telling me i could still get prego without having a period. is that true?
i was on the depo for 3 years and dint have a period for 2 years now i have been off the depo for 3 years and have been trying and i just found out i am now pregnant . Finally after 3 yrs of trying . I mam 5 weeks preg , YIPPY
i didnt get a normal period until like 2 months ago . and it was a 19 day cycle too .and i neva went to the doctors because i hate them . They always want to look in ya vagina and i dis like that alot . lol
I have been on depo for 6 years. My partner and I have decided we are ready to start a family. My next Depo shot is due for the 24th of jan, but i have already had a very light period that went from the 2nd and finished on the 5th. Could I be ovulating by the middle of this month!?! I will not be getting the next shot regardless, but we are expecting it to take a while before it happens. Is it possible to get pregnant after youve had a light period, but before your next shot is due?
i have 4 healthy children an would like another ive been on dedo since having my last child dec 05 and have now decided to stop i also was not aware of the problems trying to conceive but being very fertile hopefully i would not have the same problem(fingers crossed).i have had no abortions or miscarriages and hope to god it stays that way. i just pray for everyone who’s trying to conceive and have had no luck, keep strong and have faith.
I was on the Depo for 2 years.. i got off of it and got pregnant which seemed like right away (maybe 2 months) and had my daughter Dec 14, 2006. I got back on the depo after she was born and it ran up on Jan 14th, 2008 now we are hoping to get pregnant again..
Good Luck.
I’ve been on the depo for 8 years since i was 16, and i never remember my doctor telling me how long it could take to get pregnant. my nurse has been telling me more recently it could be a month it could be upto 15, but that doesn’t tell me if it affects my normal fertility (which could be just as bad, who knows!). i’m married now, and wanting to start a family this time next year, so considering the last one i had in november was my last. i’ll keep looking here, but good luck to all of you, i hope you’re all blessed soon xx
hi again, i just wanted to point out to those feeling as negative as me after reading all this, it’s only those of us struggling to get pregnant that have googled to this page and then commented as well - surely there are plenty of women who manage to conceive within a few months but they’ve no need to google that then! (at least thats my positive outlook on it!) x
Hi there. I was on the depo for about 4 years. My last shot was march 2005, my periods returned to normal very quickly. I came off s we decided we wanted another child ( i have had 3 with no problems). It is now jan 2008 and nearly 3 later i am still not pregnant. Docs have put me on clomid as i am not ovulating even tho my periods are fine.
I had my daughter in Sept. of 2000 and started on the Depo shortly after. I took my last shot in Aug. of 2005 and it took me approx. 12 months before I even started menstrating regularly. The reason I quit taking it was because of the mood swings and the severe headaches. I guess, because of stupidity, I decided to get back on the shot back in Aug. of 2007. I haven’t taken another one since then and here recently, I started having a period every other week. I am not trying to get pregnant, but I am having serious problems with bleeding all the time. My doctor says it’s normal, but I don’t see him bleeding two weeks out of four!! Pregnancy is out of the question, because I don’t even want to have sex anymore! I am only 26 years old, so I am definitely contributing all this to the Depo.
I had my 2nd child in dec 2006 and took one depo shot 2 days after she was born that was dec 29th 06 well after the 6 week postpatum i bled for 8 months straight then i would bleed 3 weeks stop 1 then in nov 07 i finaly had a 7 day period and its now jan 08 and im not ovulating still and were wanting to try for a third child and im not sure how long it will take and i dont want any misscarages because i had one in june 2005 so i recomend for anyone please DONT TAKE THE DEPO SHOT!!!
I was on Depo from 1999 to 2006. My last shot was Dec of 06. I have been off birth control, condoms and everything else since and still no baby. I’m so angry that no one ever told me about this. They always said “how easy it is to get pregnant once off birth control”. Obviously it’s not the case.
For former depo users who are trying to get pregnant there is hope. At fairhavenhealth.com there is a product called fertilaid which promotes regualar ovulation, restores hormone levels back to normal, and gives you the right blend of vitimins ideal for women trying to conceive. You may not get pregnant next month from using it, but it will definately shorten the time time i would take if you let your body get back to normal on its own. GOOD LUCK LADIES… hope it helps you!
im on the shot and im getting off in march and i want to be pregnant by the end of april or beggining of may but i dont know if that’s possible!! is it??
I was on depo I only had two shots and the whole time I was on the shot I had my period so for about three months. It was back in 04 and til this day I still have not had a child yet, which is starting to make me upset cause we’ve been tryin forever
hi everyone i’ve been on depo since july 12 2007 and my last shot was in september ihavent went back since then i have a lite period in decmber and i had sex in january now i have all these wierd pregnacy symptoms like my nipples got bigger and darker and i had long head aches and sleeping a lot and tummy cramps here and ther and a wierd dichage also back aches it dirven my crazy i’ve tooken 3 pregnacy test since adn they all came out negative i know these are all signs of being pregnat, but what i don’t know if these are side effects of coming off depo i really wanna know if i’m pregnat r not i’ll update u guys, i’m going to my obygn in about 3 wk wiah me luck.
I was on Depo after my first child back in 94 for about 4 years. It took me about a year to have a regular period, 3 months later I was pregnant again with a very healthy baby. After delivering her and nursing for a year I again when on the shot again for 4 years and have been off of it for a year and am just now starting to have a cycle because I would like to have one more child. Whether they will me normal or not I dont know, I seem to be bleeding at different times. Im trying to time my days to have sex just right, so I dont know if that is inducing some of the extra bleeding or not. I also prop my hips up on a pillow for about a half an hour afterwards as well, to help. ; ) I do also agree that all the time on the shot I lost alot of my sex drive so it’s really nice to start getting some of it back, I also have a goal in mind - BABY!!!
Good Luck to all!!!
I was on the depo shot for 9 months. I have been off the shot since May 14th of 2006. Still today I am not pregnant. I dont know what to do. My periods are regular but I am still not able to become pregnant. I am beginning to think something is wrong with me. I would not recomend this shot to anyone.
ive had 3 children my eldest is 15 the 2nd ones 13 and my youngest one is 6 i went on depo in 2001 after he was born now there all grown up ive decided to try for another baby ive beenoff the injection since dec 2007 ive had my periods regular as clockwork but havent fell pregnant yet im 32 now but i was in my 20s when i had my last i do suppose it does take more time as you get older as your body changes dont give up hope for those peoplewho havent had a baby they wouldnt give you it if they thought it would make you fertile think about it its not all ways the womans fault that they cant get pregnant it could be the man sperm count ,good luk anyway
Hi I wanted to leave a comment because someone else had left a msg about no one checking this site if they were not having problems. Well I am not having problems now. I am looking for a friend of mine who was told that there is a 90% chance that she is prego, because she was a week late getting her shot. Obviosously that is probably not the case. I was also on the depo for 5 yrs. When I decided I wanted to have another baby, 1 year early I went off the depo and went on ortho tri cyclen lo. i was on the pill for 10 months and then went off of that as well. 2 months later I did get prego, and I am pretty sure it has something to do with being on the pill after depo. I highly recommend that you go on the pill for at least a few months after the depo to help your body straighten out some. Hope this helps!!! Good Luck!!!!!!
Hi, I am 32 yrs old. I would like to say I was on Depo for 13 years, yes i said 13 yrs. i have had numerous problems since being on depo. I have had thyroid problems, and MAJOR heart palpatations, and now have to have bone scans for calcium deficiencys. I have always wanted another child and in my heart believe I can’t get pregnant now, that is my inner intution talking. I never wanted a period and thought ” how wonderful that would be” and now REGRET ever getting on it. I HIGHLY SUGGEST NO ONE TO GET ON DEPO EVER!!!!!!! I also smoke and thought it would be good for me for depo and not the pill.BAD CHOICE!!!!!
I was on the depo for 2 years and didnt get my shot as i was off at college. with in a month of getting off the depo I was pregnant with my son. So there is hope for some although my pregnancy at the time was a big shock!
Just want to encourage those trying to conceive not to loose hope. I too was on depo for three yrs and the reason why i went on it was because i got pregnant with a coil in 2004 (i was lucky it wasn’t an ectopic) but miscarried it. A nurse from the hospital reconmmended it for me in 2004 and i have been on it since then.
I have my last shot in May 07 because we are finally ready to start a family, my period came in sept, but since hoping to get pregnant soon. I know 1 day it will happen and I promise to let everyone knows how it all goes. good luck to everyone ttc.
I’ve been on and off depo for approx 5-6 years.and within the first two years I gained 30 pounds.so I got off the shot and within a month I was pregnant.well I got back on tha shot and have been on depo for another 2 years I’m considering having a baby with in the next 2 or 3 years but I’m worried without depo, ill get pregnant right away again..I’m sorry for everyone who is trying to have kids, but I thought I’d let yall know that I got pregnant after I was on depo.I can’t tell u if it was a healthy baby or a miscarriage:I had an abortion. But good luck to everyone.—i also thought I’d mention im 21 and many of my friends who are not on birth control have had it take 2-3 years to get pregnant.
I was on depo for 7 years with no period for about 5 of those and some spotting towards the end of each 3 months before I was due the first several shots. I got off in May 2006…first AF Oct, first ovulation december, got pregnant Aug 2007 and miscarried at 6 weeks. Currently still not pregnant again. Scary stuff-stay away!
I was on depo-provera in college for a little less than 3 years. My hair was falling out quickly towards the end and I went off of it. That was four years ago, and after I got off depo I went on the pill until May 2006. It is now February 2008 and I’m finally pregnant. I’ve been trying to get pregnant since May 06 and that means it took me 2 1/2 years to get pregnant. Never go on depo, it’s not worth it.
hi, was on depo for 5 years, came of it and 1 1/2 years later got pregnant with my first child, went bcak on depo after for 1 year came of it for few months then had one last shot in april 06 , my daughter is now 3 , would love another child but nothing happening , periods are regular now . but i feel depressed as i do not want a huge gap between my children , and i fear this will happen due to depo, i will never use this again , and would advise anyone to get of it asap if you want children soon.
Hi I was on Depo for 6 months when I was 23 (aged 31 now) had no bleeding but came off due to weight gain. Periods came back straight away. I then went back on it when I was 27 for nearly 2 years. Had last shot Jan 07 then stopped to try and get pregnant but am having terrible problems. I didn’t bleed for 9 months and eventually started bleeding in Oct 07. Have been bleeding really heavily almost every day since (it’s now Mar 08)! Have been to my Dr who has prescibed me Northisterone (progestogen)tablets to take 3 weeks on 1 week off for 3 months try and kick start a proper cycle again. Don’t know whether to take them as I am worried by putting yet more hormones in my body I could mess things up even more. I had no real problem whilst on depo but now I am desperate to get pregnant before I am too old and wish to God I had never ever had it. I am terrified it’s just not going to happen for us. Has anyone in a similar situation taken progestogen tablets to try and regulate things? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I don’t know what everyone is complaining about-it’s YOUR OWN FAULT for not researching something YOU are asking a dr. to inject into you. Do you blind taste test food in the fridge regardless of what it is? hell no. Do you apply for a job with no prior knowledge of the company? NO! you resrearch it because you want to know if you will want to retire there! Depo has been absolutely fabulous to me- i’ve been on it since jan 2003 and i’m 25 now.We are ready for another,so i am due next week for my shot and will not be taking another, because i’ve done my homework!!! and i know what to expect. just tellin it like it is,hope you all get pregnant, just be a little more educated about it next time…and by the way, i highly recommend this shot- i’ve had no period the whole time, and it’s been nothing short of fantastic.
Hi
It has been really helpful to read all these comments and realise I am not the only one having problems. I was sitting hear in tears before I found this site. I last had the depot in Nov 06 so it would have run out in Jan 07. I didn’t have a period the who time I was on the depot and the two times I came off it before for 9-12 months at a time. So I was prepared for it to take 12 months for my cylce to sort itself out. However I began menstruating after 6 months but every 2-3 weeks, then nothing for 7 weeks so hoped was pregnant, but alas no. Then 2 weeks again and gradually up to 3 weeks, then was happy last month when was nearly 4 weeks apart, but then came on again 10 days after. It’s not very easy to get pregnant when you spent half your time menstruating. So it’s now been 14 months and no joy. Have been spotting this week and am worried, so its reassuring to here it might just be the depot and no something worse. GP is going to investigate for polysystic ovaries just in case. I’m 34 and dont’ want to be much older to have my first child.
To Kell, yes I did know it could take a while but 2 of my friends got pregnant straight away and it’s pretty hard when others around you are having babies and you’re not. And you shouldn’t have to research, you should be told the full story by your doctor or in the information leaflet. The depot was great while I was on it.
I think all these personal experiences should be collated as research, this is the evidence from the real world. Would be good to hear from women who have had success too.
Hi Guys! I just wanted to comment on the depo. I was warned right from the start that the depo should only be used for half the time you don’t want to get pregnant. Meaning it lasts twice as long as you are on it. I was on depo for 1 year and a whole year of trying later, I finally got pregnant. I’m glad I was warned of that, and was able to decide to use it based on that knowledge. Sounds like alot of you were never told that.
I was on the Depo for 8 years and It took me 2 years to get prego… You can It just takes for ever realy for ever… I thought I would never have another kid, but I did I have a little girl. I know the feeling realy I do.. To all those thinking of taking the shot think about if you want to have kids later on cause if you do then don’t take the shot it is not good!!!! But for those that don’t it is great!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL….
I took one Depo shot and I bleed the entire time…It cause me to loss hair and gain weight.I had my son Nov. 13, 07 and got the Depo shot Dec. 3, 07. I was suppose to get another one Mar. 3,08 but I didn’t for various reason. I had sex Mar. 7th, 08 now I feel like I’m pregnant. Someone please tell me that’s not possible.
No to sound mean or anything, but most of you are highly uneducated when it comes to birth control. My doctor gave me a list of side effects that all of you listed and more. He also told me that I am only to be on the shot for 2 years and no longer due to long term health effects that new research is showing and he only reccomends his pt. to be on it for 2 years. Then he also told me that it takes the aveage woman 2 years to get pregnant after using the shot. He also told me not to use anyother forms of birth control after coming off Depo if I want to consive. Also if you are tring to consive eat right, get active, and get plenty of rest.
Good luck to everyone who is trying to consive.
I was on the shot since I first turned 18- planned parenthood would let you have pills but not the shot back then- I don’t know their current policies. I never had a period, nor gained any weight. It was great while it lasted. I am now 31 (yep- that’s over 12 years)- I was supposed to get a shot back in October ‘07 and after reading about the issues that some women have getting their fertility back, I decided not to get the next shot. I got my period back in December and then I just took a pregnancy test that came out positive!
Been on Depo 9 yrs. Had Ovarian cysts like another girl posted. Last shot ran out in 1st week of Jan 08. Still nothing but would swear on my life I’ve gotten pregnant (tests neg.) until I have a torrential downpour of blood for about an hour or so every few weeks (sometimes every few days) To all out there, yes I’d say this sucks. Keep trying, We’ve planned to adopt in a year or so if nothing happens - Lots of kids out there from fertile people that don’t want them. I see having a child as a gift whether I birthed them or not. My luck I’ll get pregnant with triplets a month after adopting. I’ll count it as a blessing anyway (only want 2 kids). Smile at what is good in your life and keep your heads up. Let’s all educate our doctors as sometimes they hand out meds without understanding side effects(and yes!! they should know them already) but they are human and as you all know, some humans are imperfect, and it hurts others like us.I’ve worked with various types of docs over the years in the work world. NEVER trust one person with your health - that’s what the second opinion & internet are for. Unfortunatly I’ve learned that the hard way. But hopefully it will help others. Use this experience to evaluate other meds you are on. If depo is this detremental - what are your other meds doing to you?? Keep in mind that you should never discontinue anything without consulting a few docs 1st. Little secret as a side note - DOCTORS GET KICKBACKS VERY OFTEN TO PUSH A MED AT YOU OVER A SAFER ONE!!!!!!Not an opinion - a verified fact. Please, Please educate yourselves - I wish I had better insight years ago.
WELL ALL THE COMMENTS ARE VERY SCARY TO READ…I HAVE HAD THE SHOT TWICE BUT SEE THE FIRST ONE I GOT MADE ME BLEED FOR A WHOLE MONTH AND WHEN I TOLD MY DOC HE TOLD ME TO COME GET ANOTHER ONE AND SO THAT WAS MY SECOND ONE…BUT I HAVNT HAD ANYMORE BECAUSE I WANT A BABY AND IM HOPING I GET TO BE PREGNANT SOON BUT DNT LOOK GOOD…..THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD US THAT THIS MIGHT HAPPEN AND NO ONE DID…I THINK THE SHOT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN OFF THE MARKET….GOOD LUCK ALL U AND TRY TAKEN THE PILL TO HELP REGULATE UR PERIOD…GOOD LUCK
hi everyone. wow.this was a pretty itense half hour read! im 18 and been on depo for 4yrs. shot ran out 1st march 08. my partner and i have been 2gether the whole 4 years and decided we want to have a baby.i went on depo because of severe pain and heavy periods, my sister has endomentreosis and my mum has fibroids so im freakin out! coz now i have to deal with, like alot of others, pregnancy symptoms but negative tests and the fact that aparantly it could take up to 4 yrs! plus the fact that i could have endo or fibroids.so many girls my age and younger (alot younger) in my country are getting pregnant because they are being lazy with contraception, or for whatever reason and they are either having abortions or bringing babies into this world when they are still kids themselves. dont get me wrong, my best friend had her baby oct 07, shes the same age as me and shes doing an awesome job as a solo mum. but plenty of girls i know are definatly not ready 4 the lifelong commitment of a baby! they dont even respect the fact that they are pregnant! its just not fair! my partner and i have talked everything through and have heaps of support and we are ready to be parents! almost every post on here makes a very good point, but no doctor ever told me about any of the side affects, and being 14 at the time i just wanted to be able to enjoy life. i just hope that i havnt ruined my body too much. if theres anyone out there that would like an email bubby for some support, my email address is
meganjonah@live.com
good luck everyone, its so good 2 know i am not alone!
sorry i meant *buddy
First Id like to say to “Kell” that you should be ashamed of yourself for the things youve said. We did not all get the Depo shot without first educating ourselves. I asked not one but several physicians about this shot and its positive and negative effects before getting it. Not a single one of these doctors informed me that I would have so much difficulty getting pregnant once I stopped getting this shot. If asking doctors isnt doing my homework than I dont know what is. Im 36 now and this shot has screwed up my system so badly I dont know if I’ll be able to have any more kids. I only took this shot for six months and went off it because I got remarried and my new husband wanted a child. I feel very betrayed and cheated. For those who have had no problems with Depo then Im very happy for your very fortunate luck. For those considering this shot I strongly recommend you chose a different form of birth control. Finally, for all of us who trusted our bodies with Depo only to find we’ve lost control of our reproductive cycles…best of luck regaining everything youve lost.
I was on the Depo shot for a year and a half. I went to my doctor three times just to talk to him about all the risks and benifits. I went on the internet to do research about it. I couldn’t find anything that said it would take forever for my period to come back or to get pregnant. I’ve been off the depo since Dec. 2005 and still no period. My doctor put me on the pill to help regulate my cycles but nothing yet. My naturalist friend recomended that I drink 3cups of red raspeberry tea a day to help me out. I’ve been taking it for a few days, and she said it’ll take about a month. I’m 25 years old and have a good career(day care..lol go figure i can’t have one of my own so i take care of other people’s kids) and I’m ready for my first baby. There is nothing in this world that I want more. Good luck to everyone who is trying and I’ll post my findings of the rapberry leaf tea.
im 18, and have been on depo since i was 14.
i was never told anything about the dangers of depo provera. i recently discovered that it was a chemical castration for rapists in jails.. and then my friend told me about the lawsuit against the company.. and so i asked for my history from planned parenthood, they left out 2004-2005 and gave me 2007-2008!!
i switched off of depo, and onto levora..without even knowing the consequences of switching so fast.
my breasts hurt so much. the skin is stretched and hurts.. (im an AA cup and now my boobs look fake!)
ive been off of depo for less then a month, and im already bleeding like crazy and cant even wear tampons coz my vagina tightens up on it from severe cramps..
and its not just typical stomach cramps.. i can feel my cervix and fallopian tubes and ovaries cramped up.
im an emotional wreck, and im scared i wont have kids. i was on it for 4 years.
its a scary situation.
i had the shot 1 time april ‘07 bled like crazy.took a few months for it to stop.couldnt have sex cuz i would bleed again.i finally started having normal periods around december.the doctor told me after long term use it could take a year or more to get pregnant.ive been trying since july and still no luck..
good luck to the rest of you
My last update here was in January. My last depo shot was on Oct 25/07. Therefore my depo shot was just running out on my last visit here. Since coming off the depo, I have had 3 regular (light, but regular) periods and ovulation test show that i seem to be ovulating regularily as well. We have only been trying for a baby the past couple of months, and so far no luck. I am certainly not worried yet, as I did know that it may take even up to a year or so! I was very surprised that my cycle regulated itself almost to the day my depo ran out though
My family Doctor has referred me to an Obgyn and an internalist just to make sure everything is running as it should be. I will post again after my visit to the Doc and let everyone know if they find any problems or concerns related to my depo use. Good luck to everyone
I don’t understand you guys. Why would you take the depo shot and then want to get pregnant any time remotely close to taking it. Children should be a long thought out process, not something you get an urge to do suddenly. Therefore, taking 2 years for the deop to wear off seems like a good thing to me. If these children aren’t planned enough to actually think about and research what you are putting in your body 2 years prior, you shouldn’t be having them any way. There is a reason for everything. Also, there are many reasons why people can’t get pregnant and its seems like everyone is blaming a shot. Why did you put it in your body or continue on it without research? Sorry to those of you that actually planned kids for more than two years and can’t get pregnant. This msg is not for you.
i took the depo shot for 6months first time in may07 and last shot was in nov07..i still havent gotten my period i only bled for like 2 or 3 weeks in january and thats it..i was wondering since i havent gotten my period since then can i still get pregnant?
please help?
Hi to everyone…I’m a little concerned myself. My last injection was due May 12th but now I’m having cramps like crazy with no period…Is this unusual? Please comment.
Good luck to all of you!
I took the shot ONCE and its been almost a year and i still have not gotten a reg period. I went to the doctor and she gave me a shot to try and reregulate my cycle. no luck. am i gonna stay this way for ever??hardly a woman?
I was on the shot for 3yrs (on and off, w/ other BC methods to avoid bone problems) and my husband and I decided to have a child. So, June 07′ by last shot wore off. It’s now March 08′ (9mo.) and still no prego
I’m only 24, so I’m not THAT concerned, however, I didn’t think I would be in the 6mo.-1yr range. We’re still trying, I have my fingers crossed.
As far as the shot goes, I liked it! It didn’t give me any problems and I didn’t mind not having a period (neither did my husband). Although, WHEN I do get pregnant, I wont be going back on the shot after. Takes too long and I don’t want to go on this emotional “will it be this month” rollercoaster again. Good luck to all!!
Hi All,
I was on depo for 3 years and last injection was due in october which i did not have.
Was having really bad ‘pregnancy’ side affects; extremely sore nipples/breasts, weight gain and just feeling pregnant…went for my routine smear and told the nurse and she said that she was certiain i was pregnant… and said that the only side affect from coming off the depo is that it could take 6-12month to get pregnant max… so this is a trained health professional who administers the injections and she did not know of these horrible side affects!!! Its just April and just got my period back and unfortunately the nurse was totally wrong! Although we have not banked on getting pregnant straight away it doesnt stop you hoping and wondering if it will be this month!
Good Luck to Everyone! xxx
I have taken two depo shots so far. I am due for the 3rd one in may which i plan on not taking. I didn’ t have any symptoms with the first shot but with the second shot i have bled heavily every single day- It’s been going on for a bout a month now. My husband and I want to have a family sometime in the future. The dr has told me thats normal but i dont think it is since i didn’t have any sumptoms with the 1st shot and not bleeding every day with the 2nd. I’m afraid this shot messed me up and now i’m not going to get pregnant. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE?
I too have been trying to conceive for the last 3 and a half years. I was on the Depo for 2 years and have been off it for 5 and a half years now and I haven’t been preggers once. Nil Contraception, Nil Pregnancy!! It took about a year for my periods to come regular and even now every 8 months or so I skip a month all together but not once have I been Pregnant… I think that the Depo made me infertile…. Which is sad as I’m only 28 years old and want to have another baby!!! I went on the depo after the birth of my second child.
Hey there my beautiful sisters,
After reading all your comments I feel absolutely horrible complaining. The only thing I have noticed from being off the shot (last shot OCT/07) is VERY sore breasts and no period. I hope this goes away because even walking hurts they’re so big and sore. Good luck to all wanting babies, I know you’ll conceive.
I WAS ON THE DEPO SHOT FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS, MY INJECTION WAS DUE ON THE 14TH OF MARCH BUT I DINT GET IT BECAUSE MY BOYFRIEND AND I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT HAVING A BABY AND AFTER READING ALL THESE COMMENTS I AM UPSET TO KNOW THAT IT MAY TAKE SO LONG TO GET PREGNANT. IF MY DR. WOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER CHOSEN THIS METHOD OF BIRTH CONTROL.
I was on the depo shot for 4 1/2 years, my last shot was in april of 2007. I finally started my period in the 1st of Dec. it lasted 3 days then a week later I had another and it continued till the end of the month then and I havent had another one since then my husband and I are wanting to start a family I cant believe its takin so long I would have never started getting them if I would have known this I hope we can have a baby..
I am so shoked to read all thies bad things about the shot i have been on it for 4 1/2 years and just stoped it last month because my husband and i wanted another child but now i dont know if we will be able to have another one. I an so scared i always told my husband i wanted 6 kids and i still du and know that we are stable enough to have more kids i wont be able to. I am so mad and scared at the same time.
