The Pill or The Patch?

Sunday September 9, 2007
WOMEN'S HEALTH FORUM: "I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for 7 years and recently switched to Ortho Evra patch because I was forgetting to take my pill and was worried I was pregnant. Since I've been on the patch, I've lost almost 10 pounds. I was getting migraines and my doctor said they may be caused by switching birth control and said I should try going back on the pill. My headaches are gone now so I know it's not from the patch. I'm thinking about going back on the pill anyway but I am worried I'll gain the weight back. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?" What do you think?

(1) Robert H Hilley IV says:

The Food and Drug Administration announced that the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch is putting women at higher risk of developing deadly blood clots. Some four million women use the Ortho Evra Patch. The FDA is warning Ortho Evra Patch users that they’re being exposed to about 60 percent more of the hormone estrogen than they would be if they were on the pill. That extra estrogen increases the risk of developing blood clots and other serious side effects.

In a recent survey, the Associated Press found that 17 relatively healthy women died from blood clots believed to be related to the Ortho Evra patch. But even before the Ortho Evra patch was approved, the FDA noticed non-fatal blood clots from it were three times higher than that of the pill.

I would like this information to be printed in reply to the woman on the Hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s site, who says she still has symptoms, PLEASE.
It you check with thyroid doctors, and /or the Thyroid Foundation, they will tell you the latest info. is that your TSH is not supposed to be over 2.6!!!! That,YES, they conducted experiments a few years ago and DID find that most women with a TSH of 3.0 were YES having symptoms still, so the idea of between .5-5.0 is wrong! Your TSH, and now everyone else’s, is no longer to be over 2.6. Hope this helps. OH also, a thyroid doctor is an endocrinologist
