Weight Gain Not Associated With Hysterectomy
Thursday November 13, 2008
According to an Australian website, ABC News in Science, researchers have found that women who have had a hysterectomy do not experience weight gain. However, overweight women have an increased risk for hysterectomy.
I don't know about other women, but it seemed that I gained 40 pounds almost instantly following my hysterectomy. I've always attributed this weight gain to the conjugated estrogens my doctor prescribed immediately after my hysterectomy.
Leave a comment and share your post-hysterectomy experiences.

I also gained about 20 pounds after my hysterectomy. I know meds were not the cause as my ovaries were left in therefore I did not need estrogen treatments. It has been three and half years since my surgery, and in the past 8 months I was able to take off 15 of the 20 pounds I gained, but it has been a struggle. And it remains a constant struggle to keep it off. I have a healthy diet and am not a big eater, so diet and volume of food were not the culprits for the weight gain. There is no doubt in mind the hysterectomy was the cause of my weight gain.
Had a vaginal hysterectomy at the age of 45, went in weighing 145 pounds, left the hospital at 160, jumped to 180 within 30 days, had no replacement therapy and kept the weight on for 8 yrs. no exersise or change in diet helped. Now at the age of 53,my weight is coming off on it’s own, guess the body is finally adjusting to being forced into an unatural phase.
I laso had a vaginal hysterectomy at the age of 46 and was only 130 pounds at the time. Now I am 165 pounds! I wear a patch for estrogen but also take antidepressants and maybe the combo of them is causing my weight gain problem. Ii exercise and eat right but lately I am not losing but am actually gaining more weight! I used to be a very thin person and it pains me to see how big I have gotten. It was definitely the hysterectomy in my mind!
I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago. I am overweight (a lot). About 4 months ago I began exercising. My stomach hurt so bad that after 2 months I stopped exercising to see if it would feel better. It has been two more months and my stomach still hurts. It feels swollen. Anyone else out there out of shape and overweight who has experienced anything like this?
I had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 27. During the first month, I felt wonderful. However, it was short lived once I started hormone replacement therapy. Ever since then I have struggled with my weight. With each new treatment I would gain 5-10 pounds. I eat well, lots of fruits and veggies, whole grain bread, skim milk, and drink lots of water. Yet I am still overweight. I stopped the sythetic hormone therapies and do natural progresterone. I still struggle with side effects from the hysterectomy. Wish there were other solutions. I am 37 yrs old and struggle with symptoms that people my age should not be struggling with. How frustrating!!!!!
After reading your homepage I consulted my mother who has had a hysterectomy. She informed me that she had not had her ovaries removed so therefore did not need the hormone replacement. This should be a consideration when trying to poll results as my mother did not put on any weight after surgery. This also seems to be the common element when reading other comments? Mum did not have a good time with hers at all, with other complications following.
I sound like the other ladies. I was 38 years old when I had a complete hysterect and now wear a patch. At surgery, I weighted 130 lbs – now at 41, I weight 150 lbs. As like the other ladies, I eat healthy and exercise yet it seems the weight will not drop. It’s frustrating! I feel so heavy. I’ve never weighted over 130 lbs or have been larger than a size 6.
I had a hysterectomy @ 26 and Also, began HRT (patch) I too used to be very slim and now I am approaching 190lbs. I also take antidepresants. Not looking like what they say is true.
I had a hysterectomy at the age of 53 four years ago – I had no medication after the op. I was overweight before the operation, never having been a small person. I felt wonderful after the hysterectomy as I was very poorly before it. After the initial 3 months recovery I started walking daily and suddenly one day found I was a dress size smaller. Life got back to normal (busy) and I don’t walk daily anymore so I struggle to keep the weight even. My main complaint has been the need to urinate more frequently and I cannot go through the night without waking once or twice to use the bathroom.
I am 41yrs.old. I floods and cramps very bad when I come on my cycle which I was placed on HRT,Progestrone, the Depo shot,Pills and was giving a D&C. A few years ago I was told that I needed to have a hysterectomy because I have fibroad Cyst on my ovaries which was the cause of the problems I was having. That was one of my worries if I would gain weight afer the surgery. Looking over the statements I wonder if I should reconsider and I’m not a small woman now. But I can say this from experience alot of the medications cause weight gain. So that could be something that each of you may want to check into. I hope everyone gets better and most of all don’t fall into a depressive mood cause it can cause you too if you’re not careful. But again check into the medication cause I found that most of it caused me to gain alot of weight.
I sympathise with you ladies, I had a hysto two years ago for a 10cm cyst and severe fibroids, like you I have found a constant battle with my weight regardless of the constant awareness of proper nutrition and portions of food.I find it curious and frustrating that even with exercise and proper nutrition ones weight is still a problem, and cant help but be curious whether there is some merit to the posssibility that ones hysto and the obvious lack of female hormones are in fact the perpertrators or a mitigating factor in the weight gains. It is, i feel too often not taken into account by the medical field, and often just put down to overeating and lack of exercise, personally i have a good knowledge of nutrition and only occasionaly have a treat and i eat no desserts,my alcohol intake is limited and i find i am still struggling with weight.Im sure us ladies agree we simply dont have the time for copious ammounts of exercise because we are physically flat out working and looking after our children and grandchildren,I therefore say that more investigation into the effects of lack of hormones on the female body, and it isnt imposssible for such effects to indeed be responsible for such weight gain and other symptoms
I suffered many years from painful and heavy periods (so heavy that I was having to use super tampon and super maxi pad which I changed every 20-30 minutes). After continuous discussions with multi doctors telling me that I was too young, it was all in my head or wanted to put me on birth control (even after I told them that I had history of clots). I finally found one that listened and it was discovered that I had a hugh cyst on both ovaries, other problems like low blood count, UTI’s, IBS plus scar tissue builtup on my cervix from having many byopies which made it hard as rock. Once they got me on table they found more things like there was so much scar tissue in my pelvis which had endometriosis developing on the scar tissue which choked my intestines when I cramped. The scar tissue also rearranged things so my ovaries were not in correct place (one was above my uterus, the other was where my bladder should be and my bladder was laying on top of uterus. My uterus was 3x its size, had fibro cysts throughout, spongy and crumbled the minute they pulled it out. The surgery alone to try to clear the scar tissue, try to save both ovaries and remove uterus took 16 hours but in the end I was left with a failing ovaries so that I would have some hormones flowing through through my body though they were not sure for how long considering the condition it was in. The doctor told me that she was amazed I was able to walk upright or without being in more serve pain then I was considering the amount of things wrong going on in my pelvis. Normally you have to take pain killers (morphine, oxycodine)after surgery but I took only ex strength Tylenol because the pain was so much less then before surgery. After surgery my hormones went up and down and there too so did my problems with weight. I steadly gained weight though it was slow at first, I was able to lose some of it but it was difficult and it didn’t stay off long before I was gaining again. I will say though that the last 4 years have been the worst as the weight has continued to climb and losing the weight has been even harder if at all (even with WW, walking, water excerises, being a mom/taxicab to active teenager and grandmother to active grandchildren). I know that all these reports that come out about what having hysterectomies can do or not do in regards to health, weight and other things have some truth to them. But there is no amount of testing that can cover all areas of every woman and the effects it has on their bodies. Each women’s system, chemical makeup, geneology and cultural is different so each handle things different or have different results. So to say that hysterectomy does not cause weight gain is basicaly putting everyone in same group or stereotyping everyone. Just reading these comments says that there is more to be learned. There has not been enough studies done on the effects that having a hysterectomy or lack of hormones have on female bodies. There have been many new findings since our Great grandmother, grandmother or mother’s time that have blown the old findings out of the water.
So I believe that further investgation need to be done on women in/on all areas (like lack of hormones, geneology, culture and lifestyle)and its effects have on female body/system before any truely factual claim like having a hysterectomy doesn’t not cause weight gain can be made.
I was 43 weighed 118 pounds, I had a complete Hysterectomy thru the abdomon (cancer reasons)1 year later I have gained 30 pounds, I excercise 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day and I just keep getting bigger, I excercised like this before surgery, does it ever stop
I am a 52 year old woman who had a complete hysterectomy 1 year ago. I use low-dose estrogen patches. Despite working out fairly religiously, I’ve gained 12 lbs. I really would like to see how this study was done -
I had a hysterectomy two years ago, and told myself that I wasn’t going to gain any weight. I went in weighing around 150 and have been able to stay the same, give or take a few pounds, depending the time of season. I think that if you think you will gain weight then you will, if you don’t you won’t. When I moved to Alaska, the doctor told me that I would gain about 10 lbs; and I did. I think is was all in my subconscious, and that is why I gained the weight
Did men conduct the research? I was facing a choice of a hysterectomy for pelvic prolapse. I looked for 3 months to find 3 women that did not gain weight after a hysterectomy. I fight my weight because of hypothyroidism and I could not mentally handle having to fight the extra after a hysterectomy. I went to a urogynocologist and had a uterosacropexy. I feel great now.
I didn’t have a hysterectomy, but I had a tubal ligation (which is now known can affect hormone levels) 20 years ago. It resulted in clinical depression and going on antidepressants. I weighed 118 and within a year I was up to 150 lbs. I now weigh 197 lbs. and I know this weight gain is the result of the tubal ligation/antidepressants/hormonal changes. And I am thinking that it is similar to having a hysterectomy. There is a lot that they don’t yet know about the efects of hormonal changes. So if you have had a tubal ligation I would be interested inhearing about your experience. And If you are thinking about having one, do some research before you go ahead with it.
I have just recently had an abdominal hysterectomy. As a matter of fact it was done on Nov 28th, 2008. I am concerned that I will gain a lot of weight since my surgery, esp since I am already overweight as it is. Can anyone tell me if is normal to gain weight or am I just worrying for nothing??
My hysterectomy my right left ovary was left in, and I was missing my right ovary, and he took my uterus, right tube as it was blocked with cysts, and I had a second cervix so he took both of those. I will update on the weight issue in a few months. For right now I am just focusing ob my recovery period and doing what the doctor tells, which is to still take it easy, and I am off work for 5 more weeks.
any advice is apprecaited in this matter. Thank you, Sincerely, Dawn
I had a 25 lb.Fibroid mass removed and was transfused before and after surgery. I had emergency surgery and believed until the end there must be a better way. The ovaries were left so so estrogen therepy. But I found out afterward I should have been taking progestrone because I was estrogen dominant. Estrogens can come from the environment and the body doesn’t distinguish between sythetic or natural and they are stored. I was 140 pre surgery, 125 after and now 165 and I am 5′ 1″ tall.I take homeopathics for anxiety and hotflashes. My waist is 40″ and my stomach protrudes. I have been going to Curves for several months 3X per week and saw no change. I am careful what I eat. It is very discouraging to go from a size 8 to a 14 and feel frumpy all the time.
And these reseachers are probably men. I have always been thin, actually underweight all my life until I had my hysterectomy now I am 200 pds and can’t lose an oz. And thanks to a thyroid condition it makes losing weight even harder. I walked Disney World pushing my grandkids in a shroller for 7 days and still didn’t lose any weight. And I watch what I eat.
I had a hysterectomy at 23, unfortunately I gained weight. I think that all the research that went into this must have been mislead by sleepin scientist. I went in at a lovely 120 and a year later was a voluptuious 190, then I began working overtime to return to normal, whatever that is, I can’t get past 145. I am happy but can I just say the gravity loves my body.
I had hysterectomy at age 23, I had tumers one size of a grape fruit. I went to the doctor only after it had gotten so bad I couldn’t take the pain any longer. One week later I was on the table gettting an emergency hysterectomy. I am 36 now and at the time I was so young that I was not aware of any of the supposed weight gain. I went in weighing the most I ever had, I am a small women I weighed 116, which is a lot for me the most I ever had weighed was 103. After the surgery I lost all the weight and I even got down to 103 again, in the years I have worked out and got down to under 100, not good but I worked hard. I now weigh 103 to 105 depending on the day. I think that the older you get the more pron you are to gain weight anyways, maybe it depends on the person? I have taken Premerine since day one, I have tired to get off it but I hate the way I feel without it. I biggest fear is breast cancer, the new finding suggest after 5 years of being on hormone’s you increase your risk 50%! So what about me, I have been on it for 13 years!
I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 27. I was able to keep both of my ovaries. At that time I guess because I had a 4 year old and newborn that I didn’t really gain any weight. Last year I had to have my left ovary removed and cyst off the right one, right after surg. I was having some harmone issues but I have opted as of right now not to take anything for fear of weight gain and breast cancer. I really think each person handles surg. different. I know eventually I will have to have the other ovary removed but for now I will just deal with what I have.
I also had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 52, which was just a couple of months ago. I am NOT on any hormone replacement therapy. I am doing just fine. I only experience a few hot flashes now and again. Before the surgery I was gaining weight at an alarming rate as though I were pregnant. I had an enlarged uterus and 2 large fibroids that were probably getting bigger. Anyway, after the surgery, I have found that my weight has gone down some and I am hoping to loose the rest of it. I believe that estrogen replacement would tend to make a person gain weight so when some of you mentioned that you suspected that was your problem, I think you are right. To me, it is worth suffering through a few hot flashes to not have the weight gain problem.
I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago. I lost weight immediately, due in large part to the removal of the numerous tumors that were engorging my uterus. I continued to lose weight, and felt like a new woman! My experience may have been different, but I can tell you that I’ve never regretted the surgery. should also mention that there was a serious chance that some of my tumors were cancerous, so I really needed the surgery and the subsequent chemo.
My sister and I were lean pre hysterectomy and gained a lot of weight and were young in our mid forties. My mother was lean also and had hers in her 70s and gained no weight. we all had total hysterectomies for different reasons.
I had a hyster at 29 and am now 42. I had one overy for a year and then that was removed too. I started hormone replacemant then and have been packing on the pounds ever since. Right now I am on the estrdiol patch. My question is how long should I be on replacement? I would really love to give it up now but from what I read I should stay on it until 50 to protect me heart.
I had a partial hyst. 2 years ago. I started getting extremely heavy periods and I had PMS constantly. I chose to have the operation and to leave my ovaries in. I haven’t had any problems since. I did gain weight but soon found out that I had hypothyroidism. This can cause heavy periods and severe PMS. I have researched a lot about the thyroid and when you go through hormonal changes it can affect the thyroid. This would definitely cause weight gain. You might consider having it checked and even if it is borderline or normal, you can still suffer from the symptoms. Make sure they do the TSH test and not just the T3 or T4
I had my right ovary removed in august of ‘07. I then got pregnant six weeks later and had the baby by c-section in June. a couple of weeks ago I started working out 6 days a week for 1.5 – 2 hours and am not losing weight. My husband works out 2 days a week and is seeing serious results. Is this related to the removal of my ovary or is it that I am nearly 34 and had a baby 7 months ago?
I had a vaginal hysterectomy at the age of 36. I wasn’t at all overweight when I had the surgery, but I started gaining weight afterwards. I’ve cut way down on food intake and increased water intake, but have still managed to gain weight. In 2003, I had my ovaries removed, but still manage to gain weight. I am on the hormone patch, but it has only relieved symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, but hasn’t really helped with the weight problem. I’m constantly unhappy with the way I look and try to exercise, but I just have a loss of energy, etc. I wish something could be done for us ladies that go thru this surgery and have dozens of problems afterwards. Our bodies were meant to have all of our “parts” to function and when something is removed, our body isn’t going to function properly. I feel for all of you that are going thru this. It’s NOT fun!
It makes sense that a person does gain the weight if you look at cats. I know we aren’t cats, but they are biological creatures with estrogen organs. We take them in to get fixed and fixed cats always gain a lot of weight. They always look a lot heavier than non-fixed cats.
But, what are you going to do? Say, no I don’t want a histerectamy because I’d rather die than gain 20-40lbs?
I had a complete hysterectomy at 36. I am now 52. I have gained at least 75 pounds since the operation. I try to eat well, I don’t drink soft drinks – mostly water, I used to exercise but lately that hasn’t happened much. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and there are days that I hurt a lot.
I think that the weight gain came from a lot of sources. Body chemistry, lack of movement (I was exhausted for a year after the surgery), and depression eating. Regardless, every time I read about a study that claims that weight gain doesn’t happen with hysterectomy I would like to smack those smug yay-hoos over the head!
I have been thiking back to when i reached puberty and from that time i started putting on weight. my mum cooked very healthy food, and from that time i started dieting which went on and is still going on. At the age of 18 i began the horrific monthly agony which i discribed as having thorns in your insides, that lovely disease called endometriosis.I didnt know i had this until i tried to have a baby, many cureetes and key hole surgery later i finally had two children, later i decided i didnt want to have more children so i foolishly had my tubes tied, this made matters so much worse,so much pain, profuse bleeding and blood clots, weight loss fatigue, you name it,i had operations had 2 miscarriages,2 before that. The hardest thimg i ever gone through is holdding your baby in your hands. Then at 44 i had a hysterectomy for cysts and fibroids, the weight gain has been a nightmare of ups and downs,i still have bowel problems from adhesions. One light at the end of the tunnel is i have gone on the Tony Furgesson diet it is low in carbs and seems to be working i eat very little and im very Busy, mood swings terrible ,i find im more aggresssive than ive been in my whole life, anyone else experiencing that, love to hear your stories i think your history makes a difference to the weight gain, what do you think??
In April of last year, I had a complete hysterectomy with both ovaries removed as well as a large amount of endometrioses removed along with the omentum and a bladder repair. I wouldn’t say I was a work-out nut, but visited the gym begrudingly a few times a week with little success before my surgery. After the post surgical fluid finally left, I was 16 lbs lighter. At 45, my GP finally said “I don’t have a problem with your weight.” After 6 months of progestin, I was switched to estrace as my HRT and have realized I no longer CRAVE carbs. I think this is the reason the weight is staying off. I stick to veggies/fruit and proteins with only a little carbs daily. I don’t go out of my way to avoid the carbs, I just seem to have no appetite for them. I have also felt amazingly great on a psychological level. No more monthly disasters of mood or worrying about leaking issues. I have had to visit the bathroom a few more times at night than I used to, but the fact that I am now cancer free is such a gift that I am counting my blessings and suffering from no self-pity as a result. I think mental perspective can have a lot to do with the ability to keep the weight off. When I woke up in the hospital next to a woman talking on the phone about how she was losing her 2nd kidney and wasn’t sure about seeing her daughter at her prom, I felt I had nothing to complain about, even though I had a scar on my belly that was 10 inches long. I look on my surgery as a blessing and not a curse. I HAD a curse for 32 years, once a month and I have never been happier than since it stopped! (My husband appreciates not having the “claws” come out every 4 weeks, as well!)
I realize the majority of people that comment on this article are probably those that agree about the weight-gain, but I just wanted to offer a contrasting perspective. I wont say it has been an issue-free recovery, but my weight hasn’t been at all the issue I had been warned about by others (not my MD) before I had it done. I am still not crazy about the gym, but put in perspective, I know it is better than NOT going. I am still thanking God every day for Dr G’s perceptiveness in knowing it was time to check the lump on my ovary and for finding the cancer early enough that it wasn’t necessary for chemo or radiation. I wish you all better days in your journeys.
I had a complete hysterectomy almost 2 years ago due to fibroids. I was put on Estra-test. I was 38 at the time and weighed about 140. Now, on the brink of turning 40, I weigh in at 180. I had changed nothing in my diet or exercise regiment in regards to what I was doing before surgery. Now, I have really reduced my fat and calorie intake, plus I exercise daily. But I still can’t take off the weight. And like others have mentioned, it seems as though I keep getting bigger! It makes me very sad to say the least.
sighhh. I have sat here for a half an hour reading over all these entries crying. I have struggled for so long with weight- since I was 4 and a cursed cycle- endo, poly, fibroids, ruptured cysts, etc.. . Got gastric bypass 5 years ago, and a full hysterectomy 2 years ago at 33. I was doing so well with my weight. I felt amazing. Started a wonderful exercise program, and over the years have changed it up and have even become (on paper) perfectly healthy. I used to have high blood pressure, onset of diabetes, the list goes on and on, I no longer need medicine for anything except for my skin allergies. I got down to 149 pounds and stayed there until the day I was released from the hospital after my full hysterectomy. That day the scale showed 156 pounds. I vowed to never be that unhealthy overweight person again. Seems like the vow is going to be one I can’t keep. I have progressed to weighing 186 pounds as of today- it is beyond frustrating – then when you go to your drs office ready to cry and tell him/her that you still exercise, still eat right, and haven’t changed any prior habits-except you eat a little less and work out harder- they want to tell you – you look so upset, why are you crying? maybe you are depressed and need some medicine.. well, of course I am upset, and maybe I am sad that I hate what I see in the mirror every day, but please, do not try to tell me I am depressed. Please try to help me get my body back, run more tests.. do something! Why is it that everyone keeps saying that weight gain after a hysterectomy is due to the patients choices made there after when clearly after reading this page, it does not seem to be the case. I pray that someone gets a clue and finds a way to help us. My heart goes out to everyone struggling! Maybe together we can conquer this dilemma.
I had a hysterectomy in November 2008. After that I began eating healthier. When I went back for my 3 month check up. I was surprised not only to have not lost any weight, but to have gain 5 pounds. My cancer doctor told me that the surgery and menopause would not cause weight gain… I beg to differ.
I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago at 36. I exercise in moderation and watch what I eat, but my weight has crept up from 140 to 180lbs. I’m bloated to the point that I can’t wear my wedding ring anymore, I’m exhausted, my joints ache all the time and I have the complexion of a teenager. When I went to my gynecologist, he kindly told me that hysterectomies don’t equal weight gain and all I need to do is exercise more and eat less. AGH!!!!!
OMG, I am about to be in tears! After reading all of the comments, I do not know what I’m going to do. I too had a complete hyst due to fibroids, December 17, 2008. I went in weighing 178, dropped to 170, now I am 192! My doctor is so tired of listening to me that he released me to go back to work. My primary care doctor put me on Oxazepam because i told her i can’t sleep and I am depressed. I didn’t even know this drug until I researched it online, I am horrified to take it. My belly looks like I am 7 months pregnant. What can we do?? help.
This is DJ again, I failed to mention I am on the Vivelle Dot 0.1. I am angry, depressed, stressed! I believe the surgery was the best for my health. However, i don’t think my GYN gave me enough information about what to expect. I tried to research on my own, but I feel he should have provided more information since he has known my body for 20 years!!
I am taking this whole page to my Dr and I am going to demand some help. I always feel like I am bothering him when I tell him how I feel, or by saying nothing is helping. The Physicians need us to stay in business, so they should really learn how to better treat us. If anyone has any break throughs, please post it!! Keep writing Ladies!
Has ANYONE gotten any results? My 5 pounds turned into 30 and I am not going on Jenny Craig. I can relate with the JD I am exhausted all the time and my joints ache. The silly doctors say “You really need to exercise”. Nice for them… they have the energy. Someone out there please help us!!!!
women to women website please explore. Maybe it will answer some questions. I am having the same issues. I can not lose the weight. I have had both of my ovaries removed due to cyst. I learned that I have massive amounts of scare tissue moving all of my organs out of place. Now I am using massage therapy to remove the scare tissue and it is working. I would like to use the information on the women to women website after the therapy is complete. Please share regarding the website.
After reading all the comments I’am very worried about weight gain, I tried to get pregnant for 5 years even did IVF and gained 60 pounds with all the meds the doctors gave me and now this… Anyone have any good comments on how they didn’t gain anything…
I am 34. I had a full hysterectomy 2 years ago. I was 120 then and I’m 150 now. I was told I would gain some weight, but this is ridiculous. I keep putting it on. I was on estrogen and cymbalta. Doc says it would calm my agitation. I stopped taking it all about 2 mos now without his advice. I am so sad about the way I look. I’m getting divorced, my hub did not like the 30lbs and found a skinny minni. Anyway, ladies if you get any info please continue to post. I barely eat. This makes no sense.
I had a total abdominal (bikini) hysterectomy because of severe damage to my tubes and ovaries from endometriosis in May of 2007. I went in to surgery weighing 156 and within three months was up to 170. I am now tipping the scales at 190 and no matter what I do, I cannot lose it. I chose not to take any HRT and instead use a soy menopause supplement along with vitamin/herb supplements (no different than before hyster). I walk 1/2 hour a day and weather permits, ride bike 5 miles or more. I have cut out most fats, no red meat, and cut my portion sizes in half. This study is a farce and I think we can see that. What needs to be studied is why some women cannot take it off after the hyster!
i had hysto march 2008.always slim never had a weight problem.i kept my ovaries.my uterius was as big as a melon, full of fibriods.i lost weight after op.then within weeks of getting bk to normal i gained weight.i now am 20pounds over weight.i hate it.im 46 i know everythin slows down when u get older but i look 6months pregnant,my boobs are massive.i keep goin back to the doctors saying i cant lose weight, they have no idea!my joints ache when i do any exercise.i was a slim size 10.we need an answer? i.i understand u all and ur comments.
I had a radical hysterectomy 2 years ago, at 35 years old. I weighed 130 lbs (5′6). Now I weigh 145 lbs. I eat and exercise better than I ever have. I attribute the weight gain to my surgery. Also, to the lack of energy that I now experience. I do wear a patch, so that may add to or actually be the culprit. Either way, I am no longer in pain or running a low grade temperature from a swollen uterus.
My mother passed away three years ago from Ovarian Cancer, so I chose to have both ovaries removed (only one was healthy anyway). Personally, I’d rather have a few extra pounds, than to suffer from the physical pain and/or the emotional worry
I agree with Misty and all of you ladies. The reports that come out about what having hysterectomies can do or NOT do in regards to health, weight, and other things have some truth, but no amount of testing can cover ALL areas of EVERY woman and the effects it has on their bodies. Each women’s system, chemical makeup, geneology, ETC… is different. MOST WOMEN HERE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM…HELLO…THE WEIGHT WILL NOT COME OFF AFTER THE HYSTER. So to say that hysterectomy does not cause weight gain is basicaly A CROCK ! THERE IS MORE TO BE LEARNED. THEY DON’T WANT WOMEN TO READ TIS AND NOT WANT HYSTERS. That’s why they say weight gain does not happen or is not proven. Any doctors out there reading this? Can anyone help us?
I had my hysto 6 years ago and gained 90 pounds.. I switched from equine estrogen to a soy based patch, and have recently switched to a vegan way of eating.
I’ve lost 10 pounds in the last month so maybe there’s hope. I’m reading the new book ‘Skinny Bitch’ and it’s full of inspiration and they have a cookbook too.
I’m not going to lay down for this, and I feel better already!
I had a complete hysterectomy 8 months ago and I’m not on any medication and I went from 140lbs. to 156lbs. I walk 3 miles and i’ve been doing weight watchers for over a year and I can’t seem to get the weight off. I have never felt this bad about myself before.
I just had my hysterectomy on june 19th 2009. before surgery i gained a lot of wieght. now i feel and look thinner.I will not be put on any meds!! if i gain wieght,i will kill myself.i won’t be able to deal with getting fatter, i had surgery to feel better!! oh,i feel better now. but if i gain wieght it will make me feel bad agian, so don’t have the surgery! i will end my life! please believe me!! after reading all of this, GOOD BYE!! i did not have this surgery to look ungodly fat. how many will follow?
I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago,and i have battled with weight.I really think there is a definite link with hysterectomy and weight gain, because why dont we hear about ladies losing weight? I would like to recommend a low carb diet,I think the carbs in our diets works against our hormones? maybe, maybe not?
I have eliminated bread, pasta, rice, and of course all the naughty fooods treats and sweets(not that i had them lots anyway)no potato sweet potato, pumpkin etc, there are some excellent low carb web sites as a guide anyway.
Also limit alcohol intake as it has empty calories to pile on weight as well as a negative affect on emotions.
Please all you doctors out there looking at this site, all us ladies arnt paranoid or not exercising enough or overeating, its about time funding was used to do more investigating for all our sakes.
I had my TVH 4 yrs ago at age 50. After about 8 mths, and severe hot flashes, I took Estratest HS for 2 years then stopped. I am 5″2 and before surgery weighed 110 since middle school. I now weigh 125. I have gone from a size 4-6 to a size 8. I’ve even noticed some tops feel tighter on my upper arms. I work out sporadically and eat just like I always did. I eat a lot of good foods, but also love “bad for me” stuff. The difference is that now it’s packing on the lbs. It could be age related, as I definitely don’t have the type A personality energy I’ve always had! Although I still walk fast and almost knock my coworkers down sometimes, I”m going so fast! So, for some reason, even though I do no more or less exercise than before, and eat basically the same, I’ve gained 10-15 lbs. I tend to believe there is a definite link between all of that and the menopause/surgery. I dare any man, including my husband to criticize me or any of us women until they’ve been through all of this!
I had a Particial Hyst. leaving my ovaries and my cervix at the age of 44. I have also gained about 20 – 30 pounds. I don’t take any meds but I do believe the is all because of the hysterectomy. I hope that it maybe has something to do with throwing you into menopause (even though I still have my ovaries) and like Linda it will level off in my fifties. I have started walking a lot and try to not eat a lot of carbs or fried foods. I also have tried to cut as much sugar as I can out of my diet. But you all know why these doctors don’t tell you what they all know is true, that we will gain weight, because they make a lot of money off these surgeries! It’s is and always is about MONEY!
I read that some of you seem to feel tired all the time and have no energy and your joints ache. I also have these problems. I have started taking Osteo-Biflex (triple strength) for my joints and it works very well. W/O it I think I would have had to have knee surgery. I also have started taking B-12 Sublingual dots (2500 mcg), two a day, and it seems to give me energy. I also take vitamins, and all that combined keeps me feeling a lot better than if I wasn’t taking anything. I believe that after a hysterectomy, your thyroid function changes. I am thinking seriously about having my thyroid checked. Someone above mentioned that and she is absolutely right.
i had hystrectomy at age 39.but i want to say all womens please dont ever agerr with yor doc about hystrectunless you have serious problems.i regret every day,but it is too late.another thing if you are taking hrt therpy stop it right now ,because i took hrt and i gained 15 pound.since may i stop hrt and i feeling very good .i started natural herbal tabs so i do not have
