Lap Band Makes Weight Loss Easy

From Tracee Cornforth, About.com Guide   September 8, 2010

Follow me on:

Lap band surgery, and other types of weight loss surgery, often appear to be an easy way to weight loss. The truth is that lap band surgery, as well as other kinds of weight loss surgery, are not the easy way to lose weight. The most important thing anyone considering getting the lap band, or any other weight loss surgery procedure, should understand is that these surgeries are not "magic," they are a tool that you can use to make losing weight easier.

If you want to lose weight permanently and safely, you must follow the instructions your surgeon gives you for eating after getting the lap band. How do I know? I had lap band surgery over 5 years ago. First I lost 90 pounds pretty quickly, unfortunately I regained almost all of my weight loss when a personal tragedy happened and I discovered how easily I could consume things like ice cream and chocolate.

Right now I'm, thankfully, on track with losing weight again -- partially due to having 9 teeth out and not replacing them yet. So now that I have only two teeth that I can chew with, I'm forced to take the small, well-chewed, bites of food that I was prescribed following lap band surgery. The weight is coming off slowly this time, and perhaps when I reach my goal weight I'll consider replacing the lost "chewing" teeth with implants or partials.

One of the most important things I've learned during my weight loss battle, is that exercise plays a key role in successful weight loss. In my opinion, regular exercise is almost more important than the food you eat. For many women, the thought of exercising is overwhelming, but no matter how overweight and out of shape you are, you can exercise. If twenties minutes of walking is too hard in the beginning, start with just five or ten minutes -- the important thing is that you make the effort, soon you'll be able to increase the time and effort you put  into your exercise routine.

I really agree with you that exercise is one of the most critical parts of weight loss and control. I am also happy to see that your weight loss this time is progressing slowly as this is the type of weight loss that has more chance of lasting.
I believe that any kind of weight loss that requires severe deprivation is doomed to fail in the long run. Lap band surgery is form of enforced deprivation. Another aspect of weight loss surgery is that it takes the control away from you and puts it in someone else’s hands. This way if you fail it was someone else’s fault and because of this it is easier to fail.
When you take full control of what is happening to you there is a greater chance that you will succeed at what you are doing … if that is what you want. You have no one to blame but yourself if you give up.
It sounds like you are taking control this time and I applaud you for it.
Good Luck! I wish you much success!

I was banded in 09/08 the biggest part of my weightloss occured when I was taking the pre surgery protein drinks which were necessary in order to shrink my liver before surgery ! Therefore, knowing that I had to drink these shakes for 2 weeks in order to have a successful surgery I did as I was told to do. It was the only time that I followed instructions, I have only loss 20 lbs since, gained 15 after they removed a few ccs of solution from my band due to some terrible lapband “FOOD STUCK” episodes ever, I have experienced this over 100 times, I’m most certain anyone who has lapband can agree with this. The nightmare stories that can evolve around this lapband is numerous. I certainly hope that the lapband clinics out there leave children out of it, a child would NOT be able to manage the band, most adults fail ! Not to mention what all this saliva is doing to our teeth, wearing the enamel off of them ! Cute!!!! Not all things are possible for everyone, from my experiences I should of kept my 17K ! I should of attended a few support meetings before my surgery and listen to all of the people there talk about how hard it is to stay out of the junk food! Chip, pop, chocolate and especially ice cream NEVER stays stuck, when this food becomes the only thing that we can ingest, we go for it, we did not get obese eating properly, what makes us beleive that the band will teach us that… keep your money !

I agree that exercise is critical to any weight loss program and to our overall health. I think the women that get the lap band system are brave women I personally do not like surgery. I think I would have to do the diet pills or the bars.

Lap band and other weight loss surgery in the short term is very successful at providing weight loss. It is important for long term success to get some behavioral modification counseling in order to be able to eat healthy through those stressful times, and to maintain the weight loss. As a medical provider, I have seem most patients gain back at least a portion of weight over time. It is a shame to undergo the risk and expense of surgery only to fail at the ultimate goal over the long run.

I was banded 7/09 at the age of 16! I was part of a program to help overweight teens overcome obecity. I along with many other teens between 12-18 recived the band free as long as we completed the 6month program before surgry.
Before entering the program i was at 300lbs. the day of surgery i weighed in at 270lbs and now a year and a half post op i am 180lbs. I have had my fair share of ups and downs but losing the weight and going from a size 28 pants to a 13 is an amazing feeling. I still have work to be done but college life makes it easy to now follow a direct plan.
Make sure to tone while excersising… excesse skin is not attractive and can be avoided. I recommed the band to anyone of any age with the right preperation anyone can be sucessful.
In high school i was made fun of teased and after losing 100lbs i finally got noticed by my peers and was even on Prom Court! This band changed my life! I went to college nnobody knowing i had a weight problem. I have since been in a my first realtionship and feel normal..
The bad is a gift.. it gave me my life back!

I have recently had lap band surgery. I am at week three and feeling like everything gets stuck. I am determined to succeed. I have been inspired by all of the comments I have read.
