Vaginal Itching Without Discharge or Odor
Wednesday July 23, 2003
Women's Health Forum: I've been experiencing a vaginal itch for a while now and I was hoping someone can shed some light on what my problem is. I surfed around the net for vaginal itching but everything I found states symptoms of vaginal itching and abnormal/smelly secretions. I've got the itch but no abnormal secretions. Is that good or bad?
Please help. The itch is horribly annoying. What would you do to relieve vaginal itching?

I am so glad to hear someone else has the same problem I have. I have a vaginal itch but no discharge or odor. It drives me insane some days. I use powder which helps relieve it for a bit but does not take away the problem. The powder is a band-aid but not a cure. I would love to know what to do. I have an appt with the doctor coming up, but they just sit and look at you and the their first thought is STD.
i have recently been suffering from the same thing. it started a few days ago know and sometimes it is so bad, i ake myself really sore but still keep scratching. i know i’m not supposed to scratch but i can’t just leave it alone. i don’t have any discharge and it doesn’t smell either, but i don’t want to go to the doctor. the only thing i could find on the net was either the menopause - i’m only 30 - or vaginal cancer, but i don’t have any other symptoms for that either. does anyone have a clue what this is.
Same problem! I actually went to the doctor, she tested for yeast, was negative.
It is very distracting, it comes and goes…
I have a discharge thats a white to light yellowish color and its itchy. That part gets annoying. Its odorless and its been there for a week now. Its not an STD.
I took a pregnancy test, it came out negative, but Im still unsure. Whats up with this?
I’m so glad that there are other people who are saying this!! I actually have an oppointment in a few days, and I can’t wait! I itch like CRAZY and it’s sooo annoying. I find myself trying to walk funny at times to kind of “itch” myself without making an obvious gesture, haha. It’s also annoying because even if I do scratch, it HURTS. So I’m itchy, but if I try to get rid of the itch, it’s painful… no other symptoms though, which I find odd… Good luck, and if anyone else finds out anything, please post!!
Yeah i am too and now im having like swelling .. and i know its not an std bc my boyfriend was a virgin .. so i have no idea what to do
It’s been driving me crazy for a week! I’m all bright pink and itchy on my inner lips. My partner has only been with 1 other woman in the last 14 years and I haven’t been with anyone but him in the last year, so STD is doubtful. Rheanna, I hope you share what your doctor says!
I’m having that problem to. I itch so bad its hard to go to work. I’m swelling from all the scratching but I can’t just stop scratching its so irritating. It can’t be and std because I’ve never been sexually active. I just don’t know what it is., but its killing me.
I spoke to an advice nurse last night about my above mentioned itching. I have a doctor’s appointment Wed. but she suggested I try Benadryl to help with the itching. I don’t know if everyone’s itching is like mine, but this helped tons! I’ll share what the doctor said tomorrow. Good luck ladies!
I saw my doctor today. I had been on antibiotics (Amoxicillin) about a week ago and ended up with a yeast infection. I was given Monistat 7, which you can buy over-the-counter. Good luck ladies!
I used to have the same problem, but then I changed the type of laundry soap that I was using. Turns out that’s all it was. Maybe you can try that.
Thanks everyone for sharing. I am also glad to know that I’m not the only one having the itch problem. It could mean we’ll have plenty to share when the solution is found. There’s a book called The Yeast Connection, and it said taking amoxicillin (1 week u) has a connection to the growth of yeast and the itch down there. My OB gyne also advised me not to use strong-scented soap when washing undies. I avoided amoxicillin and using scented soap and the itch was gone for a long time. But now it’s back and I don’t know what the culprit is. Please continue to share.
I’m only 15 but im having some really weird itching .. I’m not sexually active.. and I am discharging a little bit. It’s not only an itch but a tickle in a way .. and suggestions?
Help! My itch has persisted for a year. The gynae’s recommendation didn’t work, Now I soak in salt water when it gets so bad. It provides temproray relief. But at night I sometimes take antihistamin to help me sleep.
i guess i pretty much understand what we all are going thru…actually i spoke to a family planning nurse after trying so many kinds of medication…and she said often it has to do with stress and hormonal changes….but what i decided to personally do was wash myself and dry myself well ….when iam off to work i wear a clean padded cloth in my panty that keeps me nice and dry…and when i shower i use medicated soap and just concentrate and wash myself forming a thick lather…by doing that i have seen a great improvement …infact now iam fine …but iam still following my same routine….it worked for me and i hope it works for you my dear friends.
OMG ladies! i’m ready to committ suicie the itching is so bad! Same as everyone else, no smell or discharge. Just severe itching, more in the evening. I’ve scratched so hard i’ve torn the skin down there. Vagisil doesnt work. I use ivory soap and cotton undies to no avail. I’ll try antihistamines and see how it goes.
I’m having the same problems-no discharge, no rash, and no odor-just itching that won’t go away. I haven’t changed to any new detergent in the last 10years. I always lather up and use Dove when I shower. I thought it was yeast after coming off an antibiotic and so went to store and got Monistat and tried and even used the external cream. -STILL ITCHING-not likely to have an STD-have been married for 10yrs now and my anniversary was Dec 1 and I’m concerned and so is my husband as to what this is. Is it contagious-I’ve never experienced this before. I haven’t gone to the OB -so I guess that will be the next
I have the same problem. Itch with no real signs that there is anything wrong. I ran across a web site www.mydr.com.au I found some info that might help. Right now anything would be better than this. Look under vulval problems: A self-help guide. If nothing else it might give you something to talk about with your Dr.
I’ve had this problem off and on for years now and no doctor’s ever been able to tell me what it is. What helps is to take a bath with a little white vinegar. To soothe the itching you can use A&D or Balmex. Hope this helps and if you find anything please post!
I find this to be very interesting. Like many other ladies, I’m glad that I am not the only one. I haven’t been on any antibiotics recently and I do have this crazy itching but only around the vulva and not inside the vagina. I have no odor and no discharge. I have had this itching for almost the whole year now off and on. More on than off. I have spoke to several advice nurses but now I’m just going to see the doctor. Advice nurses said to use the feminine wash and stay away from scratching, yah right! They also said to make together a paste with water and baking soda and leave it on over night. No wearing of tight clothing and at night if possible, to sleep with panties off. Of course to keep the area dry and change soaps but I use Aveeno because my skin is sensitive anyway so what other soap is there. I’ve tried all of the feminine washes that are out there and creams, they don’t work. I’m afraid to have sex because I’m not sure what it is and if it’s spreadable. I will repost my findings to you ladies.
hi
im suffering frm itching too. My boyfriend uses condoms whenever we sex..and ithink this has std to him that he took some medicine from a doc..The doc asked him whether im loyal..as this is an std and normally causes with a call girl..but i havent done sex with any guy other than him and im sufferign from this problem since a yr i guess… i thought panties are the reason for this itching…but sometimes they don prove to be…i use hot salt water to wash it when the itch is severe…i must see a doc as earlier as i can
i see some discharges sometimes but not all the time
and the itch happens mostly at nights…in the day time, if i touch that area, i afraid i catch that itching..is this any vaginal infection?
My itchiness was something like you have described. I could go most of the day without it bothering me until I would have to use the restroom. As soon as I would wipe, the urge to scratch is unreal. I did see the doctor on Thursday and she said that I could be reacting to something like laundry detergent or like victoria secrets or bath and body works soaps and lotions as I do use these occasionally. My doctor said to use hydrocortizone on the affected area applying twice a day for 10 days. No longer than 10 days because the hydrocortizone thins the skin, basically it’s peroxide in a creme form. Unfortunately I am allergic to that so I will just keep trying anything that I can. She did tell me that the most important thing is to drink plenty of water. The urine could be too concentrated therefore irritating the skin. Also eat plenty of yogurt, it has some of the active bacterias in it that we as women need to maintain vaginal health. I haven’t tried this yet, but my mother suggested to me to use this medicated douche called betadine. Not to douche with it but to just apply it to the affected area with a cotton ball. She told me that she would use it when she was itching around there. I hope that some of this helps ladies. Take care

i have never had a yeast infection before, and i dont have the symptoms now except for the horrible itching. i have to go to the bathroom multiple times an hour to scratch. but its not really an itch i can scratch. it feels like its deep under the skin and i almost have to press hard to relieve that itch. its very annoying because it goes away for a few minutes, then it just builds up again to be almost intolerable. i was wondering if anyone had this same type of itch and if they know of any safe creams or lotions to use? im scared of using things that arent water based or whatnot. i dont like the idea of some gross chemicals getting into my vagina.
I thought I was going crazy and I see that there is a serious problem. I to have this itch that comes and go, with no smell or discharge. Nice to know that Im not alone. I will follow up after I see my doctor.
I just had a baby 3 months ago, stopped breast feeding, and back on the pill for 3 weeks. Husband has been deployed for 6 months (so no sex), he’s coming home in 2 days, so lots of stress. Now I’m itching. Doc said its only because of stress and hormonal imbalance. No antibiotics because i will just end up with yeast infection. A&D ointment works. Slimy, but hey, no more itch!
This happens to me when I’m stressed. I can’t put itch creams on my cooch, so I went the natural path and discovered that liquid acidophillus will help immensely
Just pour it on your granola or into a smoothie, or mix it up with some honey and you’re good to go.
Having same problem here as the rest of the ladies. Just started , decided to try an otc yeast infection cream. So far just putting on the outside to relieve the itching, it does help for a little bit. But also i am not having internal discharge, but sometimes notice white build up on the outside where my itching is occuring. I have had yeast infections in the past, but they were always with internal vaginal discharge, burning and a lot more itching then whats going on now. Been trying to find info on the net, as I have no insurance right now. Hoping all of us find our answers soon as this is sooo annoying.
I just wanted to share my experiances with you all. I have had similar itching sensations that you all describe, my problems first started 2 and a half years ago I itched all through pregnancy but I couldn’t take any fluconazole and never got tested properly I just assumed it was a yeast infection, my doc gave me a weeks course after birth but it still didn’t clear. Mine was on/off but more often on especially when I was stressed or very hot. In the end I finally got tested properly when I had a smear test and the test was negative for yeast, they had no clue so I came on here and then tried the steroid cream WOW for me it has been a miracle cure it has DRASTICALLY reduced the itching, before i used to dread going for a wee cos i knew it would burn so bad where i had itched but now i don’t even think about it. Definatly sleeping with no knickers/pyjama bottoms is a must or anything that will make you hot or irrated down below. Also a little freshen up (just a moist cotton wool pad and then dry) has helped to sooth in times past. Good luck I know just how frustrating this ‘condition’ is!
I have been suffering with the same itch. I noticed no one has been able to get an answer from their doctor. I was given two different perscriptions, neither of which really did anything. I was also tested for several causes. I don’t think my Gyno has a clue. I was wondering what age everyone else is. I just turned 50 and this seems to be just another “change” in me. There is no doubt it has to do with the skin thinning down there. That’s why it rips when scratched. I have tried everything - yes, keeping dry helps but not always, creams help, but not always. Good old A&D was more helpful than the prescrptions. It comes and goes without an apparent pattern. And its maddening. If this is part of aging, why do the doctors seem so baffled by it?
I’m so glad I found this discussion. In the past few weeks I’ve had a horrible problem with vaginal itching. I notice it during the day, but the real problem is at night. It’s so bad that it wakes me up, and I’ll lay there for hours unable to sleep; I can’t function.
I have a boyfriend and we’ve been together four years. We haven’t had sex, although recently we’ve basically done everything but. I’m hoping this isn’t an STD, because the symptoms for herpes are very close to this. However, we haven’t had sex, and the itching is a bother both on the exterior and interior. I’m going to the doctor in the next few weeks, but if anyone has an answer to this before hand, please post it. Thanks so much.
Oh my goodness, thank you ladies. I have had this horrific itch for the past week without discharge or odor and it is driving me nuts! It too only really gets to me once I’m home from work. Haven’t changed anything as far as detergents or soaps so ruled that out. I heard stress can cause this sometimes to and I recently had a death in family, maybe that’s it, not sure. At this point if anyone has any remedies will try anything. Thanks ladies for sharing.
Thank you all, i’ve been suffering from many of the same symptoms that you all have been. I will try some of the suggestions because Vagisil has not been working!
I’m also going to make an appointment with a gyno even though it seems like they haven’t been the best.
If anyone is itching TERRIBLY at night that it wakes them up, I am sad to say it, but you probablly have pin worm. I have experienced this before and it is not pleasant. You can catch the worms from children, so if you are around kids a lot then it is even more common. The doctor can give you an antibiotic but it takes about a full week for it to really clear up.
I’ve had problems with itching without any further symptoms. It gets worse the days after having any alcohol, sex, or cycle. I’ve tried the alternative health route as well as prescriptions of the usual drugs without lasting success, and I don’t like knowing they are bad for your liver and immunity, etc. Only about a week ago, I found a drink called Kombucha or Synergy (gtskombucha.com). It has billions of probiotic organisms. I’m feeling like it helps! (Be aware, there are culture strands in there and I don’t really like to consume that, do not shake well either because it seems to be slighly carbonated). Another product I have noticed but not tried personally is the RepHresh. Drugstore.com has over 50 reviews on that product that seem to indicate it may be an answer we have been looking for. I’m also wondering if the product Bio-Chelat(evenbetternow.com) would help or liquid zeolite (liquidzeolite.org) If anyone knows, please comment.
Best to us all!
I am having the same itching problem. I am 23yrs old if that helps. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. I had a yeast infection last year that the doctor gave me Flagyl for, but I determined that was because I had been douching a lot. Afterwards I started taking Acidophilus pills every morning and I still do. I haven’t started eating the Activia yogurt, or whatever, but I’m considering it.
I know my itching now is not a yeast infection. It only itches on the outer lips and there is no discharge or odor at all. I noticed someone said there is sometimes a white/clear bit of discharge near where you’ve been itching. I sometimes experience that, but I’m wondering if that could be white blood cells from scratching yourself to hard or something? Or maybe it’s what causes the itching.
I am planning to purchase baby wipes, or you can get those cottonelle wipes, to keep near all of the toilets to use after urinating. Someone mentioned concentrated urine could cause irritation, so I’m thinking wiping with a baby wipe for sensitive skin might help keep things clean.
I have also tried the A&D ointment and baby powder when the itch is worse at night. I try not to wear panties and I’ve noticed that applying A&D ointment with baby powder on top before bed helps the over night itch. Also, doing the same thing right after a shower. I heard somewhere that you should put your hair dryer on cool and use it to dry after a shower.
My itching starts to clear up when I consistently apply the A&D ointment and the baby powder after the shower and before bed. If I stop the ritual I start to notice the itching again and have to go through the ritual all over from healing to prevention, so I’m thinking of keeping up the A&D ointment and powder ritual from now on. My husband and I haven’t had sex much lately because of stressful schedules and being tired so I know it’s not a condom issue, and I’m planning after sex to either shower or use the baby wipes and apply the ointment and powder to help battle any excess moisture.
I did notice I didn’t have the itch problem when I was on birth control pills, but they also lowered my sex drive and caused vaginal dryness and made it almost impossible for me to have any natural lubrication. I’ve been off of them for almost a year and my vaginal moisture and lubrication has improved a lot and my sex drive has as well, but with the moisture came the itching. When I was a teen and wasn’t on birth control I never had a problem with so much moisture causing itching, but now it seems the case. I use cotton underwear and I am going to start making sure my under wear get washed without fabric softner and check into a body wash such as Aveeno that is more sensitive. I use Saint Ives shea butter right now, but maybe it’s not sensitive enough. If anyone finds a successful cure other than using a lot of A&D and powder all the time along with baby wipes after urinating, please share! I haven’t gone to my doctor yet, but I have a feeling I’ll get the same response as you all have. Good luck everyone!
I glad I am not the only one having this problem. Same story here, severe external itching, no odor or discharge, but I too have noticed the white stuff where the itching is worst. I am also having a bit of swelling, but I was thinking it was because of a hemroidal problem I’ve got going on. I have not been to the Dr. yet, but I will definately be trying the benedryl and the A&D ointment. Thanks everyone for sharing
Glad to know that am not alone in this itching business. I begun itching two weeks ago, with no discharge nor smell. Went to the local pharmacy and got a cream which did not help. I have now had to try sudocream, used to stop nappy rash and it has worked for me. I have put the cause of this to the stress am currently going throu.
yeah ladies. i am also undergoing the same thing for the past 2 months. no discharge and no odor nor any pain. just the itching. have tried amoxycillin and some suppositories. but nothing worked. i am thinking ofgetting the pap smear done. will try the baby powder thing. good luck all.
Hey ladies,
I have been suffering with this same problem for about 2 years. Doc just told me to stay away from fabric softners and soap…it was better, but has recently gotten worse. I am 41…for about the past 6 months I get a severe case of the itchies about one week before I get my period. I am wondering if it is hormonal…except that I do not have a lot of dryness.
I will try the antihistimine and I am planning to see the doc sometime soon. It doesn’t sound like that will help though.
I have read a few lines about baby powder…I think you need to check that out better. I recall some info about problems with baby powder in that area.
I tried the vaseline and what a difference!!!! I highly recommend it. Now I hope somebody doesn’t tell me that Vaseline isn’t good for me…
Take care and good luck! B
I tried tea tree oil. It worked immediately. It gave a fresh sort of burning feeling at first, but then instant and lasting relief. I read that you can put it in your bath. Haven’t tried it yet, but sounds good to me.
Okay - so I’m not crazy! The itching is insane. No rhyme or reason and very much like what has been decribed by so many before me. I’m 45 and married for 20 years and it started about 2 years ago. My doctor hasn’t had a clue during my last three visits (three separate and ineffective suggestions, however). I’ve tried creams and product changes to limited or no avail. It does seem worse right before and during my period and after alcohol with a high sugar content - white wine, espcially, However I’ve always had dry skin. I’m going to attempt the dermatologial approach found at www.mydr.com (search for vulvar problems) and see where that leads. Everything else has failed…why not.
try witch hazel pads!!! it has worked for me!!! i bought tuks hemmorid pads!!! wow what a difference. plus it is natural!!! good luck!!!
I have had my crazy itch of and on for the past two weeks w/o any discharge nor orders. Two days ago it stopped completely and last night after sex (after being celebate for 4 months) it returned with a vengenance and I am frightened at the thought that I possible had something and may have passed it on to my sweetheart. I have always maintained my health and hygiene, so I don’t understand why this is happening to me. After reading all of your comments because I too have been surfing the web for answers, I feel a little better at knowing how common my situation is. I have made an appointment with my physician but he won’t be able to see me until Tuesday and heaven forbid if it is something transferrable how do I face him once his symptoms began. I am so afraid of everything regarding this itch situation. I have never been in this place before. Does anyone have any suggestions?
hey wanda~
try the witch hazel- tuks pads. i have been using since about november after everything. i even carry some in my purse. i dry normal then go through again with a pad. it feels very refreshing and my itching has gone down to right before my period. my dr. didnt find anything abnormal in my pap so this is what i had to do on my own. she did give me a antibiotic for a yeast infection but it was only a temporary fix. the witch hazel has just become second nature for me now. good luck!!!! jamie
i have been having this vaginal itch for about two weeks. I was on antibiotics a month ago. But the itching did not start till about 3 weeks later..I went onine and one of the home remedies said that drinking curds everyday help. I tried that for a week. Problem still persists. Vaseline provides temp. relief..Any other solutions???
Hi girls. im so happy to know im not the only one. now it’s 5:34AM here and i have been up for hours and couldnt sleep because the itching is insane. I just got off anitbiotics.i was going to purchase vagisil but apparently, it doesnt work. i will definitely try witch-hazel tuks pads. any other suggestions?
by the way, what is this A&D ointment? does it have a generic name? or do i say just A&D?
Thank God, For other people. I now feel better knowing that this is happening to other people besides me. Major itch no odor or discharge. I am so angry because it is so irritating! It has only been 24 hours but I am loosing my mind. Everything i do is interupted by me thinking of scratching down their. oh my god I wish i had some Vicatin,,,,,,, I guess i will try the a&d ointment.
hey ladies~
a/d ointment is for diaper rash. if you use vasiline and that stuff, you are really incubating the bacteria to make the stuff grow that is making you itch. i am telling you witch hazel is awesome…i bought is back in nov. and havent stopped. it relieves and soothes minor irritation in vaginal areas. i keep it everywhere with me. you can buy the generic tuks from wal-mart or wherever. you can even buy pure witch hazel to take a bath in. if i could be a spokes person for the company i would but this will do. good luck and seriously give it a try!!! jamie
hi ladies, after having a severe itch for weeks i went to see my GP, i was advised to try canestan combi which did not relieve my symptoms, my GP then did some tests which came back negative, i was then prescribed a ‘hit or miss’ treatment - Trimovate Cream - it has been brilliant, one week on and the itch has gone. I hope this helps ladies.
Oh, thank yo, God.
I never thought that there are other females experiencing the same problem.
I’m 18 and this bout of itch has happened once before. As it was before, this itch happens after my period. However, this time round is itchier, and for a longer period (the first time was only a day, now it’s been like 3 days). There are no troubles (no itch whatsoev) in the day, but it starts in the evening.
I’m too embarrassed to go to the GP and I have no gynae so what do I do?!
sus,
yes, at 18 you may find it embarrassing but at the end of the day you are just another patient and it wont bother your GP one way or another, my GP was great when i went to see HIM. You may find it easier to make an appointment with your practice nurse first and discuss it with her.
My itching is inner thigh, croth area and crotch. Not the actual vagina.
Anyone know what this could be?
Wow, I’m speechless. It’s sad because so many women suffer from this, but yet I’m happy to see I’m not alone. For several years I’ve been itching down there in the mornings, in the evenings, after, before and during periods. Just basically all through out the day. I’m 30 now and it took me sometime to figure out how to control it. I have 2 older sisters that have no problems, none of my friends have had it either. My doctors haven’t been able to help me to the point of curing my problem so it took me some years to figure out what worked and didn’t work for me. I used to get it so bad to the point where my skin was so irritated and swollen that I made my self bleed from scratching so much. I would be fine at times and go use the bathroom only to come out minutes later with an uncontrollable itch. I finally figured out some things that work for me to stop the itching. I must admit though, at times for no apparent reason I start itching again, but now I can count the times in 1 hand. Hopefully my changes can be of any help. To start with, I am now basically hairless down there. I have to be if I don’t want to itch anymore. I really don’t know what my hair had to do with it, but as soon as I got rid of it I saw a major difference. I also make sure I don’t use any type of soap in my vulva area. I used to use scented and unscented soaps and for years I didn’t know that was even the problem. Now I just water wash. No soap at all, not even shampoo
( I tried that too). I also only wear cotton panties, no exceptions. Lastly, after I shower I make sure my vagina area is thoroughly dry. I tried so many over the counter stuff and prescribed stuff which only worked for a little. With the lifestyle changes I’ve made, I hardly itch anymore. I seriously can’t remember last time I itched.
OMG! I have this horrible itch too! It is worse after I pee. No dicharge or smell here either. It happens every time after my period, but this time it ain’t going away. Baths relieve it a little, just until I dry off then it’s the same ole crap again. I have tried EVERYTHING! From Monastat to Vagisil and even Nyastatin!!!!! Nothing works! I hate to go to the Gyno because first thing they think is STD!!!I am married with 2 kids and we haven’t had sex since the end of December. So I know it aint a sex induced thing. I do know that it is drving me crazy and I have scratced knowing I am not supposed to.But you can’t help it.Someone let me know if you find a miracle cure…Mduckworth@skybest.com
OMG ive had this itch for nearly 2 weeks now although over the last week its got worse apart from one day that i thought id cured it for it just to come back again the next day!Im 22 and thought it was just thrush and used Canasten once (cream & tablet) both have done nothing and i find that most of the time when i use the cream it just makes the problem worse and has left me red raw, I also had alot of swelling of the vulva to the extent where i coulnt bare to walk coz it hurt that much but that went down after 1 day but im stil a little swollen. Ive just tried Eurax cream but that just burnt like hell so i had to wash it off straight away, Ive also tried germolene which works for ablout 10 mins then it just back to the same old itch aaarrrggghhh its driving me mad!! Ive just taken a piriton tablet to see if that helps and im going to invest in some sudocreme today to see if this works and ill let you know - fingers crossed xx
Wow, I feel so much better after reading all these notes. I too have had horrible vaginal itching for about 8 months now. I have been to three different GP’s. One gave me medicine for yeast infection. The next diagnosed said is was probably menopause related and gave me PRemarin Cream. As I am a breast cancer survivor that made me very nervous. The itching was so bad though I did fill the prescription (very expensive BTW). Unfortunately, it has help some but not a lot. THe next doctor actually examined me and thought it was Atropic Vaginitis. Told me to continue with the hormone cream. The third doctor prescribed a light steriod cream. It has helped a little also but again not much. I am very frustrated to say the least. I am interested in the Trimovate cream that one person mentioned. I also will try the witch hazel. But from all the notes it doesn’t sound like this is something with an easy fix. Like the rest of you, I am just glad I am not alone.
I just posted a note saying I was interested in the Trimovate cream. I just Googled it and found it was a steriod cream. Since I am using that now with less than sucessful results the witch hazel may be my next thing to try. Good luck to the rest of you in finding some relief.
I have actually had this problem off and on for about five years. I am 39 now. For the first three years or so I thought it was recurrent yeast (but no discharge or odor), but the treatment HURT, did not help. I won’t bore you with all of the details of what I’ve been through, but I thought I had it beat when I stopped using panty liners and had about eight months or more with no itching. Now it’s back! I always get it right before my period, so I know it’s got to be hormonal. I’m actually considering asking my gyno about having a hysterectomy because I don’t want periods anymore (because of this, and horrible PMS, and frequent heavy flow). Taking the pill never helped and came with its own set of problems. I am just grateful to know you are all out there thinking positive thoughts for us all to find a cure! I will post after my 4/16 gyno appt to update on my condition.
I have found the cure, I have been using Piriton(antihistamine) and sudocrem (nappy rash cream) ive been using them together since last Friday (its now tuesday) and its cleared up completly although i am still using the sudocrem at night - just incase.i hope this helps x
Oh thank you God for all of these other women! My itching started about a month ago… God bless you who have had it for years! We had been on vacation so spent a lot of time in a wet bathing suit, PLUS had been on an antibiotic. I thought it was a yeast infection, even though it was about 2 weeks after the fact. My Gyn gave me Diflucan for the yeast infection… even though - same as you - no discharge or odor. The Diflucan (pills; you take one, then 5 days later the other, then done) did not work and the itching has continued. I am 46, have been married 25 years, and have had sex with no one but my husband, and even that has been a while because of the pain. I know it is not an STD… we are both faithful. I know it is not pinworms as it is light itching during the day, but as some of you have said, worse when I get home from work and can relax for a few minutes. Even wakes me up in the middle of the night. I have been under tremendous stress, so am thinking this could be the cause. I had a hysterectomy at the age of 28 (almost 20 years ago now) and have been on HRT so I guess it could be hormones, too. My Gyn’s nurses keep saying “try this” “try that” but don’t seem interested in having me come in to be seen. I insisted, but they can’t get me in until next week. I screamed at the nurse, “I’ll be dead by then!!!!!!” This just drives one insane, doesn’t it??? I tried Vagisil wipes to no avail. I shower and clean the area well - no soap now; just water - but then use a ton of KY to keep things lubricated. That helped for a while. The nurse said use Desitin, so I’ve tried that, but it doesn’t do much. I’m going to try the Tucks pads and/or A & D ointment. I don’t know what else to do. I, too, scratch till I bleed. It is just so embarrassing! I do take a Benadryl when I go to bed at night; it makes me sleep and relieves the itching. Heaven forbid I should forget to take it!! However, I am wondering if any of you have anal itching as well? I am wondering if I might have a hemoroid? Would that effect the vaginal area too? It is all exterior itching… as I said, not inside, no odor, no discharge. Again, THANK GOD FOR ALL OF YOU! I thought I was losing my mind!!! Please keep posting your suggestions!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I’ve been dealing with some itching and burning for the last 3 weeks. (I’m 50.) Been using my usual Gynecort cream, and been soaking in warm salt water. That usually clears things up within a few days. But this is taking longer. Is keeping it from being too annoying, but isn’t making it go away. I was considering seeing my OB, but after reading everyone else’s comments, that sounds like a waste of time. I’ll try some of those witch hazel wipes next. Nice to hear we’re not alone with these embarrassing problems. Thanks, everyone, for sharing.
I am in my late forties, I have only had a few episodes with Vaginal problems in my whole life but, I have been lucky because I follow this rule…I pass on to everyone…When cleaning your body,(or any time)NEVER use any kind of soap or perfumed products on/in your vagina. (I DON”T KNOW WHY THEY MAKE PRODUCTS LIKE THEY DO..for profit only) Run the warmest water (that you can take on that area)to clear and cleanse. reduce caffeine, alcohol and sugar products and make sure to wear clean undergarments. Nothing to tight or rubbing. Always wash your backside (butt) with soap(careful not to get that soap in vagina when rinsing backside)and after going to the bathroom wipe from front to back. Rinse with warm water after intercourse and avoid multiple partners.
Go to a doctor and GET HELP TO GET CURED, follow these directions and then you can find out more about using only natural remedies…This will all help..
I went to see my OB/GYN yesterday… they FINALLY got me in. She said there was no yeast, nothing else going on and that it could be stress related (which would make sense as I have been under MAJOR stress), and also the fact that I goofed on my hormone patch, missing 2 of them. This is causing dryness, which in turn, causes the itching. She said to use 1% hydrocortizone cream (Cortaid or any store brand), 1 time a day for 1 month. She said do not overdo it… just a little tiny bit and rub it in like you would rub in hand cream. She said not to get inside of the vagina, but around the outer area where the itch is. After doing this for 1 month, switch to 2 times weekly. If it does not get better, then I am to go back for a biopsy. Apparently there is some condition that affects post-menopausal women (which would include me since I had a hysterectomy at the age of 28; am 46 now)… I can’t remember the name, but it is a drying of the tissue and a biopsy would determine if this is the problem. I think I’ll skip that… I’d rather figure this out on my own. I have found that keeping the area clean and dry is helping a lot, more than the creams and etc. that I had been using. I plan to buy the Cortizone cream and give it a try. Will keep you posted. And thanks again to all… it is such an embarrassing thing, but nice to know I’m not alone in my misery!!
Well! That didn’t sound very nice, did it? I just read what I wrote… “Nice to know I’m not alone in my misery”. I MEANT to say …”not alone in my MYSTERY!” It is terribly embarrassing, and it is a mystery… and I do appreciate all of your comments and suggestions! Have a wonderful day!
I’m back (#63). Now I know that we’re told never to use soap. Hmm.. inside the vagina that’s probably true. But when there’s a major bacteria party going on “down under”, sometimes you have to take action. I just wiped out a whole platoon of bad guys with a little Dial anti-bacterial hand soap, and believe it or not, it has cleared up my problem within 24 hours. Just a little at the end of my shower yesterday, and a little on a washcloth (use mildly) before bed last night. Then again this morning. And no itching today at all. I wouldn’t do that more than a couple of days, but I have done this before.. and it’s been years since the last time.
I also eat yogurt every day, so I’m sure that makes up for any of the good bacteria that gets washed away.
This probably wouldn’t work for everyone, but when you get desperate, sometimes you’ll try anything.
Good luck you guys.
Hey Ladies it is number #43…Jamie (the witch hazel nut). Believe it or not i tried dnadruff shampoo!!! and bam! it was gone for the whole week. I tried it out of desperation of getting my period when the itching really gets crazy. so it is for itching and plus it was the cool feel kind. so i just use about a quarter sized amount and instant relief!!! plus it singed with a cool feeling after too!!! i have used it now for about three weeks along with the witch hazel and now i am itch free!!! who doesnt say the that area doesnt get dandruff??? has it never been thought of? well it worked and i am passing it on to you!!! hope it helps….my treatment costs about $8 for two months worth of tuks pads and $4 for the shampoo that will last for awhile if that is all you use it for. take care…jamie
Yes I have it too. I am 6 months pregnant with tons of hormones and even more stress. I know you’re not supposed to use soap so I take a warm water bath and clean myself out. It makes it bearable until night time and by then I am so tired that I sleep right through it. It sounds to me like we all suffer from the 3 same issues. STRESS, HORMONES, and BACTERIA.
Last night I was up all night because of vaginal itching. I spent a long time reading this whole page and decided to try to ‘attack’ my itch on many fronts. First of all, I realized that I had recently switched to this EXTREME bounce with extra scent. It smells divine ,but I think it might be contributing to my insane itching. I bought the scent-free bounce and then used it in the dryer after washing my underwear. I also bought benadryl because, if this really is an allergic reaction to the bounce, then that would help take away the itch. On top of that, I bought scent-free Eve’s feminine wash and have washed myself carefully in my vaginal area with it. You should know that this is NOT a soap and is hypoallergenic. It is also very delicate and didn’t even sting my VERY irritated vaginal area. After my shower I dried myself with the cool setting on my hairdryer and put on clean underwear. I also wiped myself quickly with the TUCKs pads that everyone has been talking about. I should tell you that the TUCKs cloths did sting me when I used them. I have no idea if they help…I’m just using them as one step in my multi-level approach to curing this problem.
Now..the verdict. I definitely felt less itchy today. Toward the end of the day I noticed the itch return, so I took another Benadryl tablet and wiped again with the tucks cloths.
I’m going to continue with this regiment and will let you all know if it worked.
I was 150% convinced that this was a vaginal problem and not simply an allergy. I never believed I could be sensitive to things like perfumes and stuff. I thought that only very fair-haired/skinned people were sensitive to that kind of stuff. Now I’m a bit more convinced that maybe this is the case for me.
It’s me again ladies… #62, 65 & 66! Well, after a couple of weeks of the cortizone cream, I’m still not getting relief. I’m with most of you… I don’t notice it so much in the daytime, but when I get home from work and relax, it starts. I’ve been washing very lightly with diluted Dial hand soap, but maybe I will try the Eve hypoallergenic stuff AND the Tucks pads. I’ve honestly gotten the most relief from Desitin! I called my Gyn yesterday with a name of a cream that a friend was prescribed. She has decided a biopsy first, then we’ll talk cream. She is thinking a testosterone cream. Biopsy is May 18… unless I experience complete relief by then. I wish I could think of the name of the condition she described that calls for the biopsy, but I just can’t remember. Will keep you posted!
I found it! It is called Lichen sclerosus (LIKE-in skler-O-sus). I just did a search on this website. Check it out… it is a skin disorder. Lots of good info.
This is the second time I have had this problem in the past year. I tend to blame it on oral sex, b/c that has been the only thing that I have done differently this year, and even though it may not completly be the case, it probably doesn’t help.
Both times I was tested for STDs and yeast - both were negative. Last time they gave me a fungal yeast infection cream and it cleared up in a couple of weeks.
But I swear this time I can’t even sleep, and I have been trying to use that cream again and it has no affect.
Same with vagisil, monistat, etc. Nothin for me. I feel like I could just scream, I am sleep deprived (it is 4:30 AM here) and annoyed.
I am itching and red, but only on the outside so it seems. I just dont understand what is going on - and how I get rid of it. I may lose my minf.
I am also on my period (started after the itch began) so my GYN won’t even see me for a week :’( And the pads certainly do not help the irritation.
AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Me again,
I have been using birth control for the past year as well - so I wonder if that is throwing me off somehow.
If it is my PH levels then a cup of yogurt a day should clear it up right? Maybe when I finally get into see my GYN I will ask them about a non-pill alternative.
If I am not commited to the insane asylum before then that is…
Hi ladies! I’m glad to know I’m not alone. Here’s what I’ve tried …
I am currently using a combination of Vagisil anti-itch medicated wipes about twice a day (they only come in a pack of 12), vagigard (an ‘advanced sensitive formula medicated cream’) that I apply two to three times a day, as well as playtex feminine wipes instead of standard toilet paper whenever I go to the bathroom.
The itch isn’t 100% gone (it’s about 85% gone); I’ve been using that combination of products for 2 days now and I feel so much better than two nights ago.
Feel better and good luck!
- L
Mo, I certainly know how you feel. I thought I was going to lose my mind, too, and I have lost sleep as well. I have finally gotten the best relief from Tucks. The container says use only 6 times daily, but I use them whenever I need to. I can go almost all day with very little itch… most of mine occurs at night for some reason, when I get home from work and can relax. But Tucks seems to be the best help thus far. Desitin was helping, but Tucks has now worked best. I am seeing my doctor next Friday the 18th for the biopsy for lichen sclerosos. It appears as some type of skin disorder and can be hormone and stress related. Funny thing is, I’ve now started itching on my elbows and torso, and have little raised bumps there. Am almost buying into the stress/hormone thing since both would apply, but I just don’t know WHY after years of BOTH. I am itching EVERYWHERE it seems. Will keep you posted after the biopsy. Youch! Take care all…. feel better!
I have been reading these posts and I think some of the symptoms sound like HSV2 (Herpes). I don’t mean to scare anyone, but I had similar symptoms and was finally diagnosed. Most doctors do not test for this, it is not in the STD panel. You typically are only tested when you ask and often docotrs don’t want to test for it. I was always STD tested and declared clean, until I did my research. 1 out of 4 women in the US has this virus and 90% are unaware. I never slept around, herpes does not discriminate. You can have it for years with out noticable symptoms. There is medication to help with the itch.
Welp, the itching is gone. What did I do? Stuck it out. I did use a yeast infection cream for the last two days on my skin only since it wasn’t actually inside of my vagina. Not sure if that helped or it just cleared up on it’s own. But I made sure to come back here and let you guys know what happened.
I think a lot of people once they feel better neglect to come back and tell us what happened - so take the lack of return posts to be a good sign. Just stick it out. Hang in there. Something set it off - and it took a week to clear up. Just some sort of severe reaction to something.
Thank God it is over.
Oh yeah, and one more thing…
Even though it started b4 my period - the irritation that the pads were causing made it worse. If this is happening to you, and you are sure it isn’t inside of your vagina and just askin irritation try tampons.
But be careful b/c if it is something else tampons can make it worse.
Hi - I just started experiencing this “itch” about two months ago. Annoying and embarrassing but it sounds mild compared to what some of you are experiencing. it’s also gone into my anal areas which is worrying me. I want to find a cure and not just relieve the symptoms.
I’ve tried hydrogen peroxide, cider vinegar and vagisil. The first two provided reduction in itching but only temp. I just got a perscription for metronidazole and will report back in a week if that helps. If not, I’m getting tested for herpes even though I’m not sexually active.
Itching is 99% better… Hello ladies! I’m happy to report that the external vaginal itching is now 99% better. However, it has moved to my elbows and torso below my bra. I finally saw my MD this week. He said he does not think a biopsy is needed (remember, I said my GYN suspected Lichen Sclerosos). He said he thought this has been caused by stress and/or hormones; said the bumps on skin look more like hives; no bumps, NOTHING on vaginal area. He did give me a script for some cream, but only for elbows and torso. He said do not use ANYTHING on vaginal area… no Tucks, no Vagisil, nothing with perfumes, dye… nothing. He said if you must, just use a little… get this… vegetable oil. Very natural lubricant. He said the Tucks are very, very drying which will, in turn, cause more itching. (I’ve been using them a LOT!) They have alcohol in them, as do the other wipes. He also said that cortizone creams used in that area can actually trap bacteria and cause a yeast infection, and I’m sure we do NOT want to do that! He said the very best thing is to wash gently with clear water, no soap, etc., and then if necessary, use the vegetable oil. I actually never got to that point…(of using the oil as I had been just using a pea size dot of KY and that worked). I just stopped the Tucks and slept w/o panties and it has helped immensely! As for the “hives” on my elbows and torso… they seem to be getting worse. I just had a thought… I’ve been eating fresh strawberries for weeks. I’ve never had a problem before, but I’m wondering if maybe I’m allergic after all these years, and they are now causing me problems. I don’t know. The main thing is, the vaginal itching has 99% stopped. I am still having some anal itching, and I do use the Tucks there, but only before I go to bed, then try to put nothing there as well. I am hoping this is all related to an allergy I wasn’t aware that I had. I will still keep you posted and hope you’ll do the same. Thanks for ALL your suggestions, comments, support!
You know what I was thinking - it may partly be my birth control. I have had this happen to me twice since switching - it seems like it may just be drying me out severely down there… even after the itch is gone i still feel just very very very dry
Update from me again…(#81) Well ladies, turns out the itch of my hoo-hoo was just the start of something else. My hives have now spread all over my body. I had to visit the med-center this weekend and was given a shot of steroid and have started a course of oral steroids just this morning. They believe the whole thing started as an allergic reaction to something… just don’t know what. If the steroids don’t do the trick, we’ll have to pursue it further. (ie: allergy testing). The only thing I can think of is the strawberries, or that I changed from Tide laundry detergent with Downy (which I have used for years) to Tide with Febreze. The strange thing is this: I e-mailed a friend in another city to tell her all that had been happening. She called me immediately. She just went through the exact same thing. Exact right down to the Tide. Now I am wondering about the Tide. So, please pray for me. I am about ready to jump right out of my bumpy little skin. I wish there was a drug they could give you to make you sleep for a week until the steroids kick in. I am literally scratching everywhere till I bleed, and I know that can’t be good. Thanks again for all of your support and suggestions regarding the vaginal itch. You were all more informational than any of my doctors. Thanks again.
Hello Ladies! I thought I’d share some tips as to how to “scratch” this horrid itch that I’m reading about. I started itching about 2 days ago, and it just kind of snook up on me. I’m 99% sure that my problem is a yeast infection due to a 10-day Amoxicillin treatment, but I should know more in the next 3-7 days, after I’m done using my yeast infection treatment. Here’s what I’ve done to relieve the itch.
First and foremost: Abstain from any sexual contact in the vaginal area. I know its rough (haha) but it helps a lot. It’s also a good idea to see if it isn’t any kind of lubricant or spermicides on condoms you may be using; or even if its the latex itself.
Try to avoid very sugary or very salty foods. The itching could also be part of a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) which can be caused by an inbalance of sugars or salts in your diet. This includes things like sodas and french fries. Try drinking a lot of water or cranberry juice.
It’s been said before, and I’ll reiterate… ask yourself if you’ve changed laundry detergents or fabric softeners. Even soaps, body washes, or perfumes. If you’ve changed detergents, try switching back. Same with soaps or body washes.
Now, for ways to relieve the itch first-hand:
The first thing I did was sit in a tub of shallow, lukewarm water, mixed with a couple of tablespoons of vinegar. It smells funny, and has a slight burning sensation, however it does help a little bit. It might not work for everyone. I drained the tub, and then ran new water, this time mixing in some table salt. It did relieve a little of the itch, but not all of it. More importantly, it helped dry things up a little bit, and the little itch it did take away helped me keep my mind off of it long enough to go to the store to get some antifungal yeast medicine. Ice packs wrapped in soft fabric (as weird as it sounds, I used an old baby washcloth that we don’t use anymore) to reduce swelling from irritation.
I know that people are against suppositories and everything, but sometimes the irritation is actually inside, and the bacteria is trickling out. I went to the store and got an Equate Miconazole 3-Day treatment. It comes with 3 creamy suppositories in easy-to-dispense tubes, as well as an external vulvar cream to relieve the itching. So far, it’s working, and I’m going to take a nap because the itching before had woken me up because I was scratching it!
If this doesn’t work, I’ll go to my gynocologist. That’s my last resort though, as I am a college student (I’m 19), and I have a limited amount of money for an exam, much less for the pricey prescriptions.
I hope at least some of my advice helps.
I have been itching for two months now. I am twenty-eight. I thought it was a hemmeroid (I’ve got four kids) But it moved to the vaginal area. I was treated by the GP with fluconazole, it cleared up for a day or two, then came back. Then the GP said I had foliculitis (we stayed at a hotel in NM, and used the pool) and treated me with a couple of antimicrobials, it cleared up for a day or two, but came back. I have had herpes since I was sixteen and I know it isn’t that. I have been to the doctor several times and have tried the witch hazel pads with some relief, not a complete cure. Have washed the entire area every day for a week with alcohol pads (I don’t suggest this, it burns!!!) I change my cotton underware twice a day. Ice helps..a lot! but I can’t live with an ice bag in my lap and think my thighs might have frost-bite. Oatmeal baths help, but aggrivate my exzema. I eat yogurt everyday. Drink spiroteen and all of my coloidal minerals. I thought stress might be it, but now finals are over and I am still itchy. I am going to a dermatologist. I will post what she says.

I think its hormonal - i was just sitting here about 6 o’clock last night and got the most horrendous itching, that lasted all night and today i am a little itchy and a little sore. Also, i had a yeast infection before, and i over did it with the medication (details…) and i’m wondering if i killed TOO much yeast and theres a bunch of bacteria running around happy and free.
and i’m thinking i’ve just got a case of the hormones, like the horses do. I use a non steroidal creme that soothes, and today its not so bad (helps on the horses, too, and of course i stop giving the mares soap bathes)
anyway, why i am thinking its hormone related, and i know this sounds odd, but i work with horses, and every mare, at one time or another, will itch around her tail, and in some cases itches so bad the skin is actually scraped off. (poor things…now i know how they feel) often its the mares with drier skin, but it cycles, and the vet said it was hormones, and when i’m sick i usually go to the vet
Wow! I’m so glad I found this! I’ve had this problem off and on for a few years now. And now, the past two years it’s been constant!! Driving me nuts! I have no discharge, and it’s always in the same place, sometimes spreading a little outward, but always on the outside of the vagina. I’ve had yeast infections before and they spread when you scratch them. This doesn’t and it doesn’t go away. It keeps me up at night and is really interfering my my sex life. I’m married, have been for six years and I know it’s not an STD. My Dr. told me it looked liked yeast, but she also told me I couldn’t get pregnant, and well, I can tell you that I can, and have. Thanks so much for your comments! If I learn anything else I will post! I’m going to the Dr. soon ( a different one!)..glad to know I’m not alone, and it’s not some freaky thing I’m dealing with, because it drives me nuts every day!!!
Note to Katie…. My doctor said stop using the Tucks pads… which are witch hazel & alcohol. He said this will cause the dryness which in turns causes the itching. If you read my prior posts, you’ll see what I’ve done. Go way back though… my whole problem has changed recently to hives all over my body due to an allergic reaction to something. They think the vaginal itching was just nature’s way of letting me know something was up… which has now spread to my whole body. Not that I think that will happen to any of you… this was just a quirky thing! But, the main thing was, the doc said NO alcohol pads… nothing like that. He said… and I know it sounds crazy… just use a little drop of vegetable oil and rub it in like you would hand lotion. Very natural substance that will keep you lubricated enough so that you don’t dry out and will probably stop the itching. Good luck!
I am 35 and this is the first time this has happen to me. I had a Partial Hysterectomy 2 months ago I was so happy no more periods but then this uncontrollable itch happened I think this is all hormonal I had a pap before my surgery and it was normal. I have tried Fungi medication Yeast medication Vagisil Pads, Vagisil Cream, Monistate 7, the pill for yeast infection nothing has worked. I have been using the A&D ointment that has helped but I think the problem is my hair down under I feel that the hair triggers the itching sensation so I am going to go for it and get a Brazilian wax and pray that that helps I have an appt with my OBGYN but after reading all of your comments I don’t think he is going to tell me anything different. I am desperate and willing to try anything I will let you know if going bald helps.
I too, have had this problem for several months. Mine has been related to stress and too much folic acid. For all you ladies that have been having problems, check into any medications that you take and see if itching is a side effect. It was on the folic acid and since i have quit taking it, the episodes have majorly decreased. But stress was playing a part in mine as well, so if things are bothering you, try to find a way to relax. I also made sure that I washed before going to bed with soap and water. The best soap that i found was a peppermint soap that i found at GNC. It provides a cooling soothing effect. I also used Gold Bond medicated itch reliever powder at times too, which helped so that I could go to sleep. Good luck everyone and keep the remedies coming.
I’m having the same case as all of you. It started 3 years ago, was 18 at that time. I asked a nurse who is my neighbour and she said maybe it’s pinworm and I took the antibiotics. For a moment, I thought I was free from itch but it came back! Sigh. So, I went to a doctor, she said I don’t have any fungal at my vaginal area and she even warned me not to scratch too much as it will worsen it. She gave me 2 creams, 1 is Eumovate Cream (Clobetasone) and the other 1 is simple cream with 10% menthol to ease the itch. But it worked temporarily. She even gave me some medication for a better night sleep, but the effect of the medicine lasted for more than a night. I felt tired and sleepy the next day. Sigh sigh. I’m turning 21 this year and currently studying in a university. Does that means I will have A LOT of stress and worsen the itch? I’m quite afraid to use some of the creams/medications stated in the forum because I don’t like side effects which will worsen everything. I’m also very shy to go to gynae and embarrassed to tell out about my problems, since I’m Asian. What to do?
(30 and have had a partial hysterectomy at 21)I have been suffering for over a month now. I went for my regualar check up(pap and everything) a week ago and my dr. said there was no discharged but treated me for yeast anyway. It has done nothing. The cream she gave me was suppose to help even it was hormonal. After a week of cream I am still very red just inside the lips. The only thing I can think of is right around the time this all started I started a treatment of Lithium (bipolar med). I’ve researched symptoms and side effects of lithium and the itching and redness isn’t listed. There has to be something that can be done. I’ve tried everything you guys have suggested here and more and nothing. All of us going to doctors and still nothing. If anyone has found anything new please post. I am so miserable.
I also have been experiencing similiar symptoms -but I think that the cause of the itch is due to a combination of things: excessive exercise in not-so comfortable clothing (things that chafe), stress and hormonal fluctuations. I was trying to not scratch, I tried the hot bath and was willing to try other non-medicinal/chemical remedies…and luckily, I found Avene thermal spa water. This spray is cooling, almost stopping the itch right away and there are natural salts in it to help with the inflammation or irritation - i think it is also sold as a remedy for sunburns. The company’s entire line caters to sensitive or problematic skin, and hey, it worked for me. Good luck ladies.
I am going to the dr. in a couple of weeks. I have had this itching off and on for over 5 years. I’ve never had a yeast infection and this itching is in one particular spot. My mom passed away from cancer last year…that came about because of undiagnose Lichen Sclerosos. She used alcohol for many years (over 10 years) without letting anyone know of the problem. This caused skin break down. When she finally went to the dr. they guessed for a couple of years. Finally, they did a biopsy and gave her a positive diagnosis. They then put her on testosterone cream (which had negative side effects), but it seemed to help some. She was supposed to go in for biopsies every year and did so faithfully, but missed one year. After two years, she went in and it had become cancer. It had advanced quickly. They then did surgery to remove the infected tissue…it’s an extreme surgery…they did not get it all and after two more surgeries, they said it was all gone. They had mentioned doing radiation, but then felt it wasn’t necessary. One year later she found a knot in her groin area and found out the cancer had moved into her lymph nodes. I have mentioned the itching to the dr. before, but they blamed it on dryness. They also mentioned doing a biopsy (only because of my mother, as this can be hereditary). They condition falls into the auto-immune category. It’s the same as rheumatoid arthritus. It is where the body turns on itself instead of repairing itself. I don’t say this to scare anyone, because my mother had sores, but I’m not sure if it started out that way. She also went for over 20 years with this condition, before getting treated. If the natural cures don’t work, it would be worth mentioning the condition to the dr. I don’t think that they are all well trained in the L.S. condition. We had to look for a dr. who was knowledgeable. It would be worth peace of mind and also you wouldn’t want to worsen a condition with the wrong cures. Another thing, the testerone cream, we were told toward the end of her life, is being second guessed by dr.s now. I’m just not sure of the answer. I’m very scared of having this biopsy done, but after reading so many different solutions and then the fear of what if I make something worse…I think I’ll take this next step. I think if my Mom would have gone early…it would never have turned into cancer. Pray and do as the Lord leads.
IMPORTANT update ladies… I’ve been having the itching since the first of March. If you read my previous posts, you will see that it started in the vaginal area. Thought it was yeast, took the meds. Turned out it was not yeast and just the outer areas were itching. Finally ended up with a rash all over - some on my torso and legs, but most of all my elbows. The vaginal itching seemed to stop once I broke out everywhere else! I had a shot of prednizone and then took prednizone pills for 2 full weeks. As soon as the prednizone was gone, the bumps came back on my elbows and the vaginal area is itching worse than ever. I am so swollen and raw, but I can’t stop itching! In the meantime, I noticed that my tongue had turned white, and the insides of my cheeks. I thought it was in reaction to the steroid. SO, back to Urgent Care again! A new doc this time… did a culture of my mouth, looked at my elbows and said, “I’ll be right back.” Seemed he was gone forever but came back and handed me a photo copy of a page out of his medical books. Seems I have developed LICHEN PLANUS. It is a skin disorder. Look it up on the web, girls… what you are experiencing could be this skin disorder. It effects vaginal and anal areas, mouth, and then different places on your body… mine happened to be elbows along with vaginal & anal areas and mouth. I just want you to be aware that this is a possiblity. I’m with Gina and am considering having the biopsy now. I do see a dermatologist on June 21, but I’m sure she won’t look at my vagina! I have lots of questions, and if she can’t answer them, I’m going to go ahead with the biopsy of my vaginal area. No more messing around. The bad thing with Lichen Planus? No cure. This could go on forever. Doc said no more prednizone… too dangerous to stay on too long. I can take Benadryl at night for the itching and he will give me a steroid cream for my elbows, but I can’t over-do that either. Meanwhile, I keep applying either plain old KY gel or… vegetable oil. Yes, vegetable oil. Doc said very natural and will keep things moist so that dryness does not occur, which in turns causes more itching. Good news? It is not contagious, so my beloved husband can’t catch it from me. Please pray for me ladies… they say this can last 18 months or more. I’ll lose my mind for sure. Take care of yourselves. God bless!
I’ve been using something similar to A&D cream to give me temporary relief. Basically, any diaper rash cream should be safe for that area. Just make sure it stays on the outer skin, don’t put it inside your vagina. It help relive the itching temporarily, but I want to get rid of this itch for good! So I think I’m going to try the tea tree oil treatments some of you have mentioned.
My itching started April 18th. I have been to the gynecologist twice. The first visit he made a slide and said he did not see bacteria or yeast. So he did a swab/pap. I tested positive for HPV. So back to the docotr I went where this time he looked at me with a colposcope and said he saw NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE of warts/hpv. He did take a tiny biopsy way up inside me (I had a partial hysterectomy two years ago) and sent me home with a prescription for flucanozole, which confused me because a week before he said he did not see yeast so why are we treating for it? Anyway, got a call a few days later saying the biopsy was negative for HPV.
So now I have conflicting info. My pap says HPV. My biopsy says no HPV. In the meantime I did the 3 day prescription cream. Felt great! Until about two days after and then the itching was back.
I am not convinced I have HPV. I had these exact symptoms a year ago and was almost diagnosed with Vulvadynia, which is like saying you have symptoms we can’t pinpoint so you get labeled with this non specific term because we have tested for everything else and come up with nothing. I am 40 years old, and as stated earlier have had a partial hysterectomy. I have also read that itching can be part of menopause???
So what I have decided to do is get a second opinion. I was just tested for all STD’s at my annual in Feb and had nothing. I did have a boyfriend between then and now, and was stupid and did not use a rubber every time. Now there is a mistake I won’t ever make again if I ever decide to go there again at all after this drama!!!
I am going to a new doctor on the 20th for a second opinion. I will repost and let you know what the results are. I hope, hope, hope the tests come up negative. I tell ya the thought of having to explain HPV to a prospective loved one is so not appealing. It is enough to make me just hang up dating and sex forever!!!
I have had Herpes since 1991 and it rarely ever bothers me. As a matter of fact I can not even remember the last time it bothered me, so I know it is not that.
I will repost after my next results. Hang in there girls! I am praying for all of us!
I couldn’t believe all of the other women out there who have the same problem as I do. It seems to go away totally when I have my period - and then returns with a vengance after it is over. It’s the worst at night, and spreads around my body and drives me crazy itching at night. Does this happen to anyone else?
My doctor gave me prednisone for a week, and it stopped the itching, but as soon as I went off of it, it returned again. I read that sitting in a big bowl of water with 3 tablespoons of boric acid right after your period would help - so I’m going to try it. Any other suggestions would be great!
I’ve had the same type of itching for about 3 weeks. I was so severe, that if I could have used a boars hair bristle brush to scratch it, it would not have made a difference. It started a week before my period, so I was forced to wait even longer before I got in to see my gynocologist.
The itching was all external, no discharge or odor was present and it went from the front door all the way to the back. This was 24 hours a day. And I couldn’t sleep it was so severe. In the interim, I tried most of the advice posted in this section. Starting with salt spritz baths, baking soda, Aveeno Oatmeal and Collodial soaks. None really helped, but the salt water provided a bit of relief. I tried washing the area with tea tree shampoo (dandruff) and applied tea tree oil (a natural anti-fungal). I dried the area with the cool setting on my hair dryer, wore cotton panties and tried to stay a dry as possible. I also tried A&D ointment, that provided some relief. Finally I moved on to Vagiguard. Oh, even Benadryl at night didn’t help me sleep.
Five days ago I saw my doctor and she and the nurse both said “tis the season”. She said it’s fungal (an overgrowth of yeast) and it the heat and moisture that’s making it so severe (I recently moved to Florida). I’m 39 with 2 kids and a husband and I’ve NEVER experienced anything like this. I’m not overweight (which can aggravate it), but do exercise and that can aggravate the cause because of sweating. My doctor also said that A&D ointment is anti-bacterial and can actually worsen the condition. So far the Lotrisone Cream (also known as Clotrimazole-Betamethasone cream) has helped tremendously. Also, Gold Bond powder and cream help with the itching (she recommended that as well).
I had researched about Lichen Sclerosis and was previously worried that was it, however I didn’t have any sores or rashes that go with that. I will keep it in mind though if I do not continue to improve. My doctor said that it is not an easy fix though and warned that I might fight it all summer. She prescribed 6 refills of the cream!
I’ll keep checking back. Good luck to all of you!
hi everyone, i have the same itch that you all describe. mine is more internal though. just like everyone else there is no discharge or odor but it is very annoying. it just started i guess a few weeks ago. i am going to try the monistat and see what happens. i had a uti in late april that was pretty bad and i was on really strong antibiotics. i was thinking maybe it was a yeast infection from the antibiotic. has it been too long for the antibiotic to have this effect? and not to mention that i recently fell in love with this bath and body fragance and having been using the shower gel daily (i know not bright). i am really nervous about going to my doctor. i had my annual in january and all was clear, but i am still very much afraid of other things. any advice?
Hey ladies…I have been plagued with the lovely itchiness for over a year now. It drove me nuts while I was pregnant. My external itching comes and goes…no odor or anything so I don’t think it is a yeast infection. I have tried every kind of cream out there, even tried using some of my baby’s diaper rash cream (since I keep itching, it’s caused a rash)even using his Caldasine powder I put on his bottom. Everything I try works for a short while and then it comes back with a vengeance! Somehow having sex with my hubby is the last thing on my mind…all i want to do is scratch! My mom actually suggested using a powder for athlete’s foot as she heard a tv report that the same fungus that causes a yeast infection causes athlete’s foot. So I have been using JUST that powder, no creams along with it or anything…so far, the itching is lessening (thank God!) and my rash is starting to go away. By the way, Gold Bond is probably the best to use but I’ve found the one from the Dollar Tree works just as well. Will keep you posted to let you know how it all turns out. Hopefully scratch-free would be nice…
I was so relieved to find this forum and know I’m not alone. I have been ruling out various causes as possible. I don’t think it’s hormones, since I’ve been on the same pill for years and am only 30. Despite the lack of other symptoms, I tried Equate miconazole-3 for yeast, and that only burned like heck and otherwise didn’t seem to change anything. I’m testing the laundry detergent possibility next. I’ll repost what I find.
Ihad this itch for over seven years and have gone to seven doctors and two three gyns. Tried every prescription drug and every over the counter medication without long lasting results - at the most a day or so. Now looking at vulva cancer. Be sure to have the doctor do a biosopy.
I’m almost moved to tears reading this litany of complaints so similar to my own. Like Amy mentions in #102, I was diagnosed with tinea cruris, which is basically the same as Jock Itch (athletes foot) I call it Jill Itch. Itchiness is exterior at this point - although it had migrated to anal and I think it was inside for a while. The 10 day course of Nystatin helped that part. I had a bad case of athletes foot last year and my Dr. explained that it can migrate from the feet to the crotch area when one puts on one’s underwear. I’m very careful now to poke my feet through leg holes in clothing. However, all the treatments, fluconazole pills, miconazole and clotrimazole creams and a 10 day course of anti-fungal tablets have not done the trick. Like many on this list it is much worse right before my period comes and seems to slack off after that. Also sometimes worse after sex (which I have a hard time being enthusiastic about because of the itching both before and after - and I have a wonderful husband!). I don’t use any soap at all on my vagina - have used Weleda diaper rash cream with calendula and also pure jojoba oil - some of this may be dryness from all the treatment at this point. I am about to call and make an appt. with my gyn or my dermatologist. I have been dealing with this for at least a year and I WANT IT TO QUIT! Wish me luck - and good luck to all of you - and thank you for your honesty! Peace…
ps: Christiane Northrup is a very wise MD - check out her website or her book, Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom. She addresses some possible causes for this itchiness.
your itching may be from a Urinary Tract Infection. i went to the doctor to check it out and they gave me an antibiotic, i wsa cured in three days! you have to go to the doctor right away though, if left untreated a UTI could turn into a kidney infection, yikes!!! to temporarily relieve the itching i soaked in a warm bath for ten minutes, then put on clean cotton underwear afterwards.
It’s so wierd you type something hopefully in google and you find exactly what you need!! I went to the nurse last year and she said basically it’s excessively dry skin - after I go to the bathroom my skin peels off onto the toilet paper. I have excessively dry skin elsewhere, palms, heels, scalp and have had psoriasis etc and they think it’s just part of the same problem and the only advice was to wash with a soap substitute. It is NOT working and I am FED UP of nearly two years of constant itching, so thank you for the info, advice and mainly helping me hang in there - it’s not a yeast infection, or an STD and it’s not something that’s your fault, so be persistant about getting proper care because they tend to dismiss it and underestimate the discomfort and embarrasment. I know I’ll be back requesting proper attention…
I am 17 and was SO nervous when this started happening! mine is not as severe as others on here and Im sure its not an STD. It is so hard not to scratch and if anyone has suggestions of any over-the-counter itching cream that is okay to put down there that would be so helpful! Im so glad Im not alone with this!
After being intimate with my boyfriend I noticed that I had slight swelling and itching the day or two afterwards. At first I questioned if it was an STD but he was tested prior to our intimacy with negative results. My god the itching was awful!! The vagisil max strength helped a bit but I kept using them about every 20 minutes. I could not sleep for two days it was terrible! I was so frustrated because I had no discharge like a yeast infection. When I went to the doctors they tested me for both bacteria and yeast with completely negative results. But she did prescribe me this sanity savor cream, nystatin and triacinolone acetonide and it really worked. The doctor also told me that it could have been a severe allergic reaction to either spermice or latex. I was surprised to know that a reaction would last over a week (how long it took things to return to normal). I am just so happy it is over. I hope this helped, I know all of your pain too well.
ive been expierencing this itch as well and after reading all of the previous comments i have a few ideas as to why and maybe even how to make it go away…thankyou guys for taking the time to make comments that could potentially help others i appreciate it….maybe i’ll be albe to get some sleep now!! -3:01am
Isn’t it crazy how so many of us are going thru the exact same thing!? I’m 47 and my itch has been going on for almost 3 months now. There is no discharge or smell, and the vagina itself is fine. At first it was slight enough where I would just ignore it and keep myself clean. The last 2 weeks or so it’s been unbearable!Lord help me if I actually get to scratching at it! I tried all the OTC creams- nothing worked. I had myself convinced it was the crabs and freaked out- I’m happily married and believe me we DON’T sleep around.Well, I keep myself pretty trim but went and shaved most of it off-no nits, no lice, so thats a relief. I’ve been reading thru all these posts and am amazed at the bewilderment of the Gyn’s. I too started using Tucks, but a lot of you were right-with the alcohol in it it tends to burn and dry out-so I bought a bottle of plain ol’ witch hazel, it says non-drying on the label. I use cotton pads to wipe myself down with it a couple times a day and it helps some- I’m going to try the vegetable oil thing- just in case its a dryness issue. I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago but haven’t started going thru the change yet, I hope this itching isn’t part of that- who knows how long it would last! Ugghh! I’ve made an app’t with the Dr. but thats a week away and am not counting on much good results coming from it after reading all of your experiences. Thanks to all of you for making me feel not quite so alone in this! Good luck everyone!
I’m 27. Same thing happening to me. Vaginal exterior itching, no odor, no discharge. A little anal itching as well. I tried Summer’s Eve anti-itch wipes and they helped with the anal but not the vaginal. so I went out and bought some vagisil today and so far the itching has stopped but I am afraid what will happen tomorrow. I did recently switch soaps and laundry detergents. I have also been under a lot of stress and it has been incredibly HOT where I live and I’ve been sweating a lot. I am just praying it isn’t pinworms because that sounds horrifying (can you see them?). I am avoiding the doctor, but if I go, I’ll post back and tell you all what she said. I am happy to have found this forum of ladies who are experiencing the same thing. I’ve had yeast infections, a staff infection and urinary bladder infections and what I am experiencing now is unlike any of them. I am guessing it is due to the heat. I’m going to just try rinsing with water and wearing loose clothes and cotton.
Hey ladies eat plain yogurt its gross! But it should help. And thumbs up with the salt bath. I’m not sexually active but the yeast problem is common in my family every once in a blue moon you just itch. The plain yogurt frequently maybe one serving a day works. Most will not like the taste so eat it with something fruity say a strawberry or peach.
Hey fellow sufferers, My itching came out of no where,April this year. I’m in my 50’s, this is not yeast or an std. No worms, pets or sexual contact. This is something that the docs aren’t familiar with. The lotions, potions, rubs, baths, etc. are only for short relief. I removed Tide, bounce, for sensitive skin detegents, even used dreft, changed toilet tissue, take warm baths with salts, oatmeal, vinegar, you name it. can’t seem to get anything but partial relief, also take a bendryl at night. cotton panties, and no panties, I think we just all want an answer, and seems it shouldn’t be so hard to cure this thing once and for all. The one thing that I’ve taken from this chat is that could be stress, that I do have, but have to deal with it, in my own way, the gym, helps with the stress but the itching always returns. I’m gonna send these comments to my gyno, so she can see how many women are going nuts with this agravation. barb.
Ladies, I thought I was the only one on Earth that had this problem. I have lived with it for a year now and didn’t dare tell my Dr. cause I was afraid she would tell me I was dying, uncureable or nuts. I have the itching 24/7 BUT about 10 days before my period it worsens to the point I don’t want to leave the house because I am afraid I will itch and not notice doing it. I have tried everything over the counter and nothing has taken it away. I finally told my Dr. in Jan. about it and she told me it was normal. That many, many woman have this problem. She perscribed me a pill but it didn’t work. I am waiting for my next visit to see if there is anything else that can help.
I appreciate ALL of your words because, even though I am overweight and stressed, I know I am not alone about this.
Maybe together we can find something that will help us all.
Thank you again for being honest about this matter and God Bless.
My Last Period was June 14 after couple of days after my period my itchy started and its totally disaster. It was awful and i totally scream and I am so scared June 23 i went to see the OB and i got my paps smear diagnosed and its Negative except for this neutrophils. So i just ignored it for couple of days but the itchy is still there, i went to see other doctor to be sure if i really have lots of neutrohils, and yeah there you go so she asked me to check for another smear and she told me i have a genetal warts! F***** boohoooo!!! so i have no choice she asked me to burn and freeze it. And Last July 4 i woke up really painful my lower tummy is hurtin the right side of my waist my back was totally painful. I cried and went to see other doctor again he said i have an urinary tract infection! OMG! He said one cause of itchiness is my UTI?! But how bout my genital wart?! I am still itchy and its getting worse! I cant sleep, eat, work i feel i wanna die! =( My warts is growin back again like multiple, and double the itch! My god i dont know what to do. Btw i am 26 and i am not a sexual active. Please HELP =(
Hello all, I am another victim of “The Itch” My symptoms are pretty much the same as everyone else’s. Vaginal itching w/out discharge and odor. I have tried several of the same remedies as many of you to no avail. I have found that Neosporin the topical anti-biotic helps relieve the itch. After reading all the post and writing down all the helpful advice I want to thank everyone. I have a somewhat different problem along with the vaginal itch. I am itching all over my body which started way before. I feel that I have some form of allergy similar to Teri, which has spread to my vagina . I went to a Natural Health store and they said to eat yogurt, try colloidal Silver, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, vitiam B complex, flax oils. I bought
liquid acidophilus (Bio-K) which you can drink. It can be used to treat a yeast infection by soaking a tampon with it and inserting the tampon. I just saturate a q-tip and wipe vagina area.
I have tried just about all the other remedies but cortisone, gold bond, and vegetable oil. I will try them though. By the way I have been on Predizone for ten years due to Rheumatoid Arthritis , Predizone treats skin conditions also. I believe now after reading all the post that our problem is due to stress, heat, and hormones. We girls are so very lucky to have each other. Please continue with the advice.
glad to c im not alone!, tho do pity anyone else who’s going thro, like many others it my itching starts in the evening…why is that?!..mostly on upper body but when i go to bed it goes to vag/anal, which is so bad i cant sleep either, havent change soaps recently and dont think im stressed…gonna go to docs again but i feel like many, u just get fobbed off with a diff cream/pill and they havent even looked it it…got tub of nappy rash cream…gonna give that a go…desperate measures…
Thank you so much ladies. I’ve had this problem for a few months now and have been too embarassed to go to my Dr about it-thinking I must be the only one who has this and it must be something I’ve done wrong. You’ve helped me so much because now I feel more comfortable calling my Dr and talking about it knowing it’s much more common than I thought (unfortunately). I’m so tired of not being able to sleep at night-scratching it so raw I make it bleed and then I can’t sleep from the pain i’ve caused it and I make it hurt when I pee since I scratch it raw. I thought it might be due to dry skin too so I started drinking more water (which is actually a good thing since i’m dieting). I’ve tried changing my underwear twice a day, and many of the other things we must think to try instinctually but nothing seems to help. I can’t imagine going through this for years like some of you have. I know there are much more horrible things out there but seriously the thought of this for years terrifies me.
UPDATE from May 11th…I didn’t realize it’s been so long! Anyway, I took the weeklong dosage of metronidazole and the itching was less intense but still there. About a month later I decided to renew my perscription but this time I took my dosage differently - instead of a pill every 12 hours for 4 weeks, I took 4 pills all at once (which the dr recommended as an alternative method). I’m not sure if this had anything to do with it but it worked for the most part. The itching is almost completely gone.
I should add that I also took some advice I found on this site - I keep myself trimmed down very close (I have no idea why that would help but it does) and I use powder on hot days. I also have been staying away from non-cotton underwear that seemed to aggravate the situation.
I’m doing much, much better.
So maybe try metronidazole - good luck to everyone!
In response to Diane, comment 119…our problem is identical!! I scratch ’till I bleed!! My doctor told me it may be the clothes detergent I use; it’s not. I thought it may be because of a LACK of sex–I’m 32 and I haven’t been active since I had my son 2 years ago. The saying “use it or lose it” has come to mind. Am I losing it? I can’t see using vagisil for the next how many years, ya know? This chronic dryness, itch and true pain CANNOT be NORMAL!!! Somebody find a name for this!!
OMG! I am so glad this just isn’t me! I have never had a yeast infection or STP and I am in my 30’s. My itching usually occurs (without discharge) after I develop a UTI. My sisters and I are extremely prone to UTI’s. I knew there had to be some kind of relationship. Reading some of these posts have confirmed it. Does anyone else that gets UTI’s at the drop of the hat develop this horrible itching several days later? My UTI seems very mild this time. I developed it on Friday and of course was not able to talk to my gyno over the weekend. The pain & awful burning from the UTI is gone, but the itching is horrendous - sometimes like a very uncomfortable tickle, and at worst, I want to cry because I can’t do anything except think about how badly it is itching. I’m guessing I will probably be put on meds even though the UTI seems to be passing. I read that mild cases can go away on there own. But the itching is driving me to the point of insanity. If anyone else has had experience with this, please post! I will repost if I learn anything helpful from my doc. Vagisil has reduced the itching,(mine itching is just on the inside, but seems isolated in that small area - I guess this still classifies as internal?) but not completely. Thank goodness I found this site. Makes me feel a little better.
Wow do I love Google and all of you wonderful women! I am recently divorced and back out in the dating world (bleh). I fooled around with someone (safely I thought) and for the last 2 months on and off I have had that itching we all know so well. I have been scared out of my mind that I picked up an STD, but I can’t find any STD that is only external, inconsistent itching. No odor, no bumps, no abnormal discharge. In fact, I almost feel more dry than I usually am. I did recently go on vacation and spent a lot of the time at the pool so maybe that’ it? The hot weather + wet bathing suit thing? I do not have the itching every day, but when I do it’s usually in the evenings and it’s brutal. I used an old tube of Vagisil a couple times out of desperation and it helped. I have had a yeast infection before and this is definitely not one of those. I’m so relieved to find this and wanted to thank everyone for being so candid. I think I’m going to try Olive Oil instead of veg oil and apply it in the afternoon with a cotton ball as sort of a pre-emptive strike. I think the Tea Tree is a good idea too, maybe I’ll make up a little mix of the two. I may try using the dandruff shampoo once a week. I’ll let you know how it goes. May you be itch free and well-rested asap!
