Texas Mandates HPV Vaccine for Preteens
Monday February 5, 2007
Texas is now the first state to require HPV vaccine for girls ages 11 or 12. Although the vacinne isn't required for school entrance until the start of the 2008 - 2009 school year , About.com's Pediatrics Guide Dr. Vincent Ianelli says now is a good time for parents and caregivers to learn more about the HPV vaccine and how it can significantly reduce your daughter's risk of ever developing cervical cancer.
Do you think having a state require the HPV vaccine as part of the required childhood vaccinations for school entry is a good idea? Will you give your daughters the HPV vaccine?

This is an outrage. Given the success of VIOXX and PAXIL as well as other new “wonder” drugs, I wouldn’t give this vaccine to my dog!!
Plus if you read the literature about it, it carefully uses the word “MAY” quite often. It “MAY” kill the virus that “MAY” cause cervical cancer. They don’t know. It’s just another expensive drug to add to the bulging wallets of those involved in marketing it.
PLUS, of note…the politician in Texas involved in pushing this bill through recieved a HEFTY campaign donation from the BIG PHARMA company that made this drug?
Conflict of interest? Or just his own intere$t$ at the heart of this matter.
It is disgusting.
I doubt this drug has even been adequately tested….lets look at Fosamax(bad, dangerous poision), VIOXX…killed many.oops!! we bad.
PAXIL…ooops again…people killed themselves and sometimes others.
Probably will find out that this poorly tested drug will cause future birth defects or infertility.
No thanks…We need to go back to TEACHING our young people how to behave.
PLUS, this drug is not preventing a disease that is airborn. IT should NOT be required to attend school. You can not “catch” this at school. I find this a violation of my daughters rights.
This is an outrage and needs to stop!!
I think it’s extremely disrespectful of our girls and young women - basically says to them, “Take this shot, you whore.”
Why are Texans not outraged by this?? The ONLY way to get HPV exposure is through SEXUAL contact. Governor Good Hair has once again bowed down to the machine. We need to get this guy out of office. This mandate has to be unconstitutional. What if oyu are a Christ Scientist and don’t beleive in medical intervention are you barred from school? That would certainly be a violation of your rights. I could go on for days this is so outrageous. Does anyone think it is OK?
I’m not totally against it. Afterall, it is a vaccine and the premise behind it is that the weakened virus will be injected so the body can build a tolerance to it…which is totally different than prescription medications. SO, I say if it keeps more women from being ill from cervical cancer- it’s ultimately a great idea if it works the way it’s supposed to.
The thought of this terrifies me!!! My 15 year old step-daughter heard of the vaccine and immediately said, ” I’m going to get THAT!!! I don’t want Cancer!” Good grief!!!
I told her AND her father that I would NOT allow it if it was in my ability to prevent that happening! I am a DES baby (and so are my brothers).. I had a world of reproductive hurt (culminating in a TOTAL Hysterectomy before I was 28. I am one of MANY!
We are finding out that more and more of our ‘cure alls’ have repercussions far down the road. Our bodies have been experimented on for years.. with food additives, ‘created food enhancers’, and various drugs! At this point, I am allergic to ALL antibiotics, sulfa, penicillin, morphine, codine, and vaious food stuffs! There are MORE and MORE of ME’s all the time!
SO???? THIS IS NOT OKAY!!! Leave our children alone! I WANT great grandchildren someday!
In recent decades the USA has made a huge effort on several fronts to distance the law from enforcing its power on issues related to private sexual practice.
What’s this now? Government actually intruding into the bodies of innocent children to — protect them against the consequences of potential future sexual behavior?? Come on!
I respect my daughter and the integrity of her body. I will not participate in any “required” immunization with Gardasil.
Feminists should be outraged by what Texas has done: a mandatory-by-fiat government intrusion into the bodies of innocent young girls.
Required immunization with Gardasil crosses a boundary. There are basic human rights issues, as well as legal principles, here that will benefit from clarification by the highest courts in Texas, and if need be, in the country.
Otherwise, where does it end? If mandatory insertion of virus-like- particles, why not mandatory insertion of nanoparticles, gene sequences, & microchips? Because that is what is on the horizon.
I am totally disgusted with this bit of news! The state has NO right to tell Texans or anyone else for that matter, that they have to vaccinate their daughters with this drug. I agree that we are too quick to jump and take “medical cure-alls” for every disease and virus. Considering it’s only spread through sexual contact, we should be making our young girls aware of this fact and continue to teach them to be responsible concerning sexual matters instead of forcing yet another drug on them.
My daughter will not be subjected to any injections, pills, liquids, etc. that have only recently been introduced to the public….which we call a “marketing” technique….but, of course, they want us to believe the unveiling is out of an overall concern “for public health.” I don’t think so!!! Whether a product has been tested enough according to others and their guidelines that THEY go by will NEVER be what I GO BY for the safety and wellness of my daughter and her future as well as any of my family. This product or drug or whatever they want to call it is still very much in the “trial” stages of experimentation. So until years of use and reports are compiled on the results of other daughters whose moms were willing to go along with this “marketing scheme” of our government, this mom is keeping her daughter’s sleeves rolled down.
I am for the vaccine. I wish the vaccine would have been available when I was a kid. I had my experience with hpv, cervical cancer and surgery that could’ve left me infertile. I had my first pap test done when after I met my husband when I was 18 and it was negative. A year and two months later I was trying to get pregnant, went to an obgyn to find out why. She did my second pap test and it was positive for hpv, cervical cancer in situ and she told me I would’ve had spreading cancer had I not gotten surgery asap!! Mine was very rapid. I then had trouble conceiving my daughter because a womans cervix plays a big role in facilitating conception. It took me five years to get pregnant and now at 33 I have a beautiful 8 yr old girl!!! HPV HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NUMBER OF PARTNERS A WOMAN HAS!!! SO I HOPE PEOPLE QUIT USING THE WORD WHORE!!!!!! A WOMAN CAN WAIT TILL HER WEDDING NIGHT TO BECOME SEXUALLY ACTIVE AND STILL GET IT FROM HER HUSBAND!! It is very prevailent, but women aren’t usually tested for hpv unless they have an abnormal pap and the problem with this is that the virus may not cause problems right away and a woman might skip paps for a few years if she gets one negative. In the meantime she may be developing cancer!!! My husbands aunt died this way at the age of 48!!!I understand concerns about any new vaccine or drug but this vaccine will help our next generation of women, protecting them from at least one source of cancer and possibly genital warts and possible infertility from these things.
First of all, it is a vaccine, not a DRUG. Children already have to have several vaccines in order to go to school, why not one that can prevent cervical cancer and infertility? These are rampant among women in America, and I think it is great that strides in the medical field are beginning to help common problems experienced by only women.
This very much newly developed “drug” is NOT being marketed as a CURE. It MAY end up helping or it MAY end up hurting those who are forced to take it !!! NO ONE knows or guarantees this is THE drug to take to avoid cervical cancer. WHY would I allow or subject my daughter to be the TESTER or SAMPLER according to what OTHERS THINK are in her best interest and then find out years later she ended up being GIVEN problems… instead of reducing or not having them at all!!! And what will she remember?? She’ll remember the fact that her mother allowed OTHERS to hurt her daughter’s body by believing in experimentation being done on a young girl while all along playing Russian Roulette with her future. I know for certain we can do without those memories in my daughter’s childhood scrapbook.
It doesn’t matter what anyone CALLS OR NAMES this product that is SUPPOSE to be good for my daughter….the true heart of this matter is how I would be putting my daughter’s future at possible risk by taking a gamble on what OTHER PEOPLE are representing to me as being THE WAY TO GO. We need to remember what gambling means….taking a chance….we do that with dice not our daughters.
Risk of HPV-related cervical cancer is highly correlated to a woman’s sexual practices, as well as to her choice of mate(s) and their practices. This has been known for a very long time, and is still accepted medical/scientific fact.
Gardasil vaccine protects against 4 out of 20 strains of HPV known to cause cervical cancer. Beyond those 20 strains, there are 80 other known strains of human HPV.
Gardasil’s main protection is against the ANXIETY of risks related to sexual behavior, and that protection is largely conferred by Merck’s ad campaign. The chorus of “I’m protected!” ads? Somebody should sit these kids down with the facts.
Merck’s research studies suggest a degree of protection, while at the same time indicating an increased rate of serious congenital birth defects, as well as increased rate of autoimmune disease among the immunized. And this is early days.
There are no readily available reports of the effect of Gardasil administration in kids under the age of nine.
Gardasil anti-HPV vaccine will be available to women if or whenever they elect sexual practices that render them vulnerable to HPV, either by way of personal practices, or by taking on a mate with questionable history.
If that’s the case, WHY foist the vaccine onto younger kids? The answers are pretty obvious, and they have more to do with corporate greed than with the humanitarian predisposition of Merck.
I think it would be great if young men were vaccinated because this would probably eliminate the spread of these hpv strains!! I am so tired of being labeled as awhore or promiscuous or the fault of why I had hpv, cancer and surgery!!!!!!
The body of an 11 or 12 year old girl is still growing. Has this vaccine been tested for 20-30 years to see what the LONG TERM EFFECTS are going to be? Probably not! What’s wrong with PARENTS instilling in their children morals and values and teaching them to remain abstinent and with holding from having sex until their adult years to keep from contract a sexually transmitted disease!? 80% of women will have this virus by the age of 50, according to statistics! What right does the government have to team up the lobbying pharmaceutical companies paying for politicians campaign funds, to tell ANY FEMALE, girl or woman, what they do and do not have to do with their bodies!
Vaccinations when manufactured over the years have had toxic elements contained in them. Many are only 50% effective at best. To force someone especially a young child to have a vaccination is not ethical. We should be able to choose what goes in and out of our body. Our rights are slowly being deminished by those who are in the fear of getting a disease. As a cancer survivor and author of two books A Journey Through Cancer and What You Must do to Escape the Bird Flu. I have learned to use and trust natural means of healing the body. I would rather trust my wisdom to use natural means rather than subject my body to something it does not need.

I completely understand why people would be hesitant with this. I think the first person said it best, “Given the success of VIOXX and PAXIL as well as other new “wonder” drugs…” I’m don’t think I would be quick to jump on this one. There needs to be years and years (more) research done on this vaccine before I’ll trust it on my daughter. Thankfully, I have the luxury of that time as she is still a toddler. But isn’t this what we’re doing all the cancer research for? To find cures. Yes, it “may” prevent the disease, but that sounds pretty promising to me. As for the parents out there who are saying thing such as “you have to be sexually active to get the virus, so my daughter doesn’t have anything to worry about”. Are you sure? I was sexually active at 15 and now at 29, my mother still doesn’t know that. Kids lie. Even the good kids.
Perry has gone too FAR NOW. He has no right to impose this vaccine on precious children when this vaccine has NOT been tested, if at all, since the beginning of this drug, 2006. Merck and Perry are married at the hip. One of his former staff members is working for Merck and pushing this. WHO is GOING TO MAKE MONEY off of this vaccine? Not the young girls. Too many drugs, not enough knowledge to explain this to young girls. DON’T LET THIS PASS TEXANS. Bad choice Perry….. You should never have been re-elected. Now you should be put out of office for even thinking of doing this.Shame on you Perry. What a jerk. Nat
I am 35 and even if it were available for women in their 30s I would never take it. The biggest reason is b/c of medical issues. Also, I have issues with HPV already. Yes, virgins can have issues with certain strains of HPV.
If I had a daughter I would not let her have the vaccine, especially now while it’s still too new.
I read that with this law in TX that there apparently is also an opt out clause for parents if they choose not to have their daughter get the vaccine.
i think this law is offensive; why not go ahead and require IUD’s or Norplant, also; that would certainly cut down on the teenage pregnancy. and if they are going to be req’d for girls, why not for guys, also; they are involved in half the process (usually)
as an fyi…i can say, with my history as a school nurse, that you can legally refuse a required immunization signing a paper and having it notorized; this must be redone every 2 years;
Lets see, this “miracle cure” MAY prevent certain cervical cancer and MAY prevent certain strands of STD’s. Then again it MAY NOT. Will we ever know, when this is a vaccine with a Mercury base and when they used a Mercury based placebo in the blind test study, which of course skews the results. But then Mercury is such a healthy chemical isn’t it.
There are other immunizations which contain mercury as well as formaldehyde, and a combination of other toxic dump chemicals, which of course the doctors don’t tell the parents about the dangers presented to their children. Doctor’s do not believe it necessary to inform parent that certain immunizations can, not may, CAN cause Autism, ADD, ADHD, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Sudden Infant Death Syndrom, as well as other neurological defects and learning disabilities.
This vaccine is manufactured by ONE company. This company also just happens to donate MILLIONS of dollars to certain key individuals in our governing body, gee makes one wonder why they, [the government], have such a sudden interest in this, right?
The one fact that we do know so far is that Gardasil is known to cause rheumatoid arthritis, bleeding disorders, and Parkinson’s disease and this is a relatively new vaccine, this does give pause to wonder what other disasterous if not fatal results will be forthcoming in the near future.
I actually blogged about this today, and while I was doing the research I noticed this line on Merck’s Gardasil website:
Only a doctor or healthcare professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for you or your daughter. Interesting that “state government” isn’t included there with doctors and healthcare professionals, don’t you think?

After reading all the comments, I am glad so many are speaking out against this virus vaccination. It seems that we are moving further and further away from the being well. The more advanced we become in medicine the sicker we are. It is an invasion of privacy on the part of the government and we can not be complacent regarding this issue. It is our right to determine the outcome of our bodies. Cervical cancer is not contagious and therefore can not be passed from person to person. This policy sucks, my son is now 13 and just received the chickenpox vaccine because I was so against him having it. What is happening that the government can intrude in our lives, pass bills that require us to do something we are against without our imput. This is an outrage. I think it’s time for women to become more in tuned with their bodies.
A healthy mind, body and spirit will put this companies out of business.
Its time to become to be self healers again. Learn about herbs and teas that affect our bodies in a positive way, the affects the moon has on us.
I may be bias because I am a conspiracy theorist but I think there is a concerted effort on the part of government to control the functions of a womens body.
