Definition: A sexually transmitted disease usually found in the moist areas of the genitalia. The most common STD in the U.S. and part of the family of human papilloma viruses (HPVs). Although genital warts usually cause no symptoms, they are the leading cause of abnormal Pap smears and precancerous changes of the cervix. Women with genital warts have an increased risk for developing cervical cancer. Can be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth. There is no cure--the virus that causes genital warts is usually present for life.
