  • Keep yourself physically fit through regular exercise, and good nutrition.
  • Don't smoke, if you do quit. Smoking leads to other conditions that increase the risk of lower back pain.
  • Proper posture is a major factor in the prevention of lower back pain, as well as back pain in general. So stand up straight, just like your mother always told you.
  • Sit in chairs that provide support to your lower back, and sit up straight maintaining proper posture. Sit with your feet flat on the floor, sitting with one leg under you or crossed puts added stress on your back.
  • Don't do activities that you know will hurt your back.
  • Learn proper lifting techniques.
  • Lose weight. If you are 10 percent or more over your ideal weight you can dramatically reduce your risk of lower back pain by losing weight.
