Cervical Dysplasia

Definition: Precancerous changes of the epithelial cells that line the cervix. Seen through a microscopic examination of Pap smear tissue. Occurs in less than 5% of all Pap smear and most often in women ages 25 to 35. Risk is increased with multiple sexual partners, sexual activity before age 18, childbirth before the age of 16, and a past history of sexually transmitted diseases. Treatment depends on severity of dysplasia and can include cryosurgery or conisation.
