Definition: A pill that prevents pregnancy from occurring by preventing ovulation. Oral contraceptives are usually taken for 21 days during the menstrual cycle followed by 7 days of placebo pills, or no pills, during which menstruation occurs. Birth control pills are available in estrogen/progestin combinations or progestin-only pills.
