PID pelvic inflammatory disease

Definition: Occurs when a bacteria or organism enters the cervix and spreads upward. Symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease include: lower abdominal pain, fever up to 103 degrees, rapid pulse, chills, back pain, pain during sex, and vaginal discharge. A sexually transmitted disease with 90% of all cases of PID caused by untreated gonorrhea or chlamydia; however it can occur following childbirth, abortion, or other pelvic procedures. Long term consequences include future fertility issues and pelvic adhesions. Can be fatal if left untreated.
