Medicinal Herbal TherapyMedicinal Herbal Therapy:
A Pharmacist's Viewpoint
by Steven G. Ottariano, R.Ph.

As consumers we are demanding more and more information regarding the use of herbal therapies and pharmacist Steven G. Ottariano is often asked for recommendations to treat his customer's various health issues. Mr. Ottariano is one of a vanishing breed of pharmacists who can be depended on to give his customer's reliable advice when they seek answers to their concerns.

Medicinal Herbal Therapy: A Pharmacist's Viewpoint is one of the most comprehensive guides to herbs that I have read to date. This outstanding book which is presented in clear-cut language is the perfect reference guide to herbal alternatives for consumers, as well as for professionals, who seek information regarding the safe and effective use of these treatments.

Part one opens with specific remedies for relieving conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause, as well as a myriad of other conditions ranging from arthritis to migraine headaches and urinary tract infections. Part two discusses several herbs and describes what they are used for, dosage information, side effects, and how they work in the body. Herbs covered include Chamomile, Feverfew, Evening Primrose Oil, Kava, and St. John's wort, just to name a few.

Advice encompasses more than just herbal recommendations, for example the menopause section suggests specific vitamins and minerals that are useful for menopausal symptoms including 400 to 800 IU (international units) daily of Vitamin E to help reduce hot flashes, in addition to other vitamin/mineral supplements and herbals such as Black Cohosh and Dong Quai, among others.

The book continues with a discussion about topical herbal treatments that are useful for a number of skin disorders and conditions such as burns, abrasions, and dermatitis. Excellent data regarding the use of herbals in children is included, as well as important information about herbs and pregnancy.

If you are only going to have only one herbal reference book in your home, this is the one to have! Its simple format allows easy access to the precise information you need when you need it.
