This Week's Feature

"Cancer: Part One- Prevention & Early Warnings"
This month Womens Health will feature a new article exploring cancer each week. This week, learn the real impact a healthy lifestyle has on your life in my article based, in part, on a December 31, 1997, report from the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention.

The Rose Report

If you happen to be one of the thousands who took Redux or Fen- Phen, you need to be aware of the recommendations for those who took either of these drugs for even a short time. If you're experiencing any symptoms which include; chest pains, shortness of breath, and rapid or irregular heartbeat, you should call your physician to schedule an echocardiogram. An echocardiogram is comparable to a sonogram of the heart. It's perfectly safe to perform and causes no pain or discomfort. I had one just before Christmas and am waiting for the results.

Even, if you are not experiencing symptoms, you should have an echocardiogram performed before having any dental or medical procedure, including tooth cleaning. Approximately 30% to 40% of people(mostly women) who took these drugs have developed heart valve disease which causes a thickening of the heart valves, causing the valves not to close properly and allowing regurgitation or 'backward' flowing of blood through the diseased valve.

People with heart valve disease are at high risk for developing endocarditis. Endocarditis is a potentially fatal infection of the heart caused by bacteria which can enter the bloodstream during even simple tooth cleaning.

Endocarditis is preventable with antibiotic therapy before, during, and after medical or dental procedures. Always tell your health care provider if you took these drugs, they may want to give you antibiotics as a preventive measure, if you have not had an echocardiogram performed.
