Rescue Efforts Underway for Doctor with Possible Breast Cancer
Dateline: 10/13/99
Dr. Jerri Nielsen is the only physician among 41 researchers at the Amundsen-Scott base--part of the United States based National Science Foundation. She was on the base at the South Pole when she discovered a breast lump in June this year. However severe weather conditions have precluded a previous rescue attempt. Supplies were dropped to her in July and it is believed that she has been treating herself for breast cancer.
Earlier today, rescuers said they hope to be able to attempt a rescue either today or tomorrow. They must wait for the temperature to rise above -58 degrees Fahrenheit before they can safely land at the base. The plane will be on the ground for less than thirty minutes and will continue running during the rescue. The temperature factor is vital to the proper operation of the planes hydraulic system, as well as preventing changes to the fuel.
