Definition: An epidemic retrovirus
that causes AIDS (aquired immunodeficiency syndrome) which is a fatal
illness. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV type 1 is
the type that causes AIDS. Type 2 HIV is not as rapidly progressive
to AIDS and is not as severe; however it is epidemic only in West
Africa.
