  • Alternative treatments for lower back pain include acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractic care, the Pilates Method, reflexology, Tai-Chi, and yoga.
  • Surgery is indicated in cases of prolapsed disc, tumors, and other conditions of the lower back. Types of surgery include discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion, and BAK cage, among others.
  • For GYN causes of lower back pain surgery may be necessary to correct the condition causing lower back pain. It's very important if your health care provider suggests a hysterectomy that you explore all available options before choosing hysterectomy.
  • Exercises specifically designed for lower back pain, as well as other types of physical therapy.
  • Medication to manage pain. A pain management specialist provides several ways of treating lower back pain including Biofeedback, pain blockers such as caudal epidural, diagnostic lumbar facet, lumbar epidural, lumbar nerve root, provocative discography, sacroiliac joint, and trigger point injections.

Talk to your health care provider about your options for treating the cause of your lower back pain. Don't listen to what others say about their lower back pain--the cause may be completely different and so may the treatment your health care provider suggests. If surgery is suggested, it is always a good idea to get a second opinion. Most reputable physicians won't mind, and may even give you suggestions on other physicians you might want to use for a second opinion.
