Question: Is Preventive Treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis a Good Idea?
Answer: Yes, there are times when prophylactic antibiotic treatment is a good idea. Many physicians and surgeons routinely prescribe the antibiotics – metronidazole and/or clindamycin - to prevent bacterial vaginosis whenever women undergo hysterectomy, abortion, or other pelvic procedures. Prophylactic antibiotic treatment often helps prevent the formation of pelvic inflammatory disease resulting from any bacteria that makes its’ way into the pelvic region during or after surgery. PID is a serious condition with the potential to lead to devastating consequences.
