When you schedule your next Pap smear, try to make an appointment that is about two weeks after the first day of your period, and follow these simple steps to receive the most accurate Pap smear results at your annual visit to the gynecologist.

  1. Vaginal douches are not recommended during the three days before your Pap smear.

  2. Don't have sexual intercourse for two days before your Pap smear.

  3. Tampons, vaginal creams or medications, and contraceptive foams or jellies are not advised during the 48 hours prior to your Pap smear.

  4. Take showers instead of tub baths during the two days before your Pap smear.
