Definition: Premature menopause occurs when menopause occurs before the age of 40. Causes of premature menopause include genetics, autoimmune disorders, and surgical procedures such as ovarian removal during hysterectomy, as well as other medical treatments. Premature menopause is different from premature ovarian failure because the ovaries never resume activity.
