Definition: Surgical menopause occurs when both ovaries are surgically removed. Surgery that removes both ovaries is called bilateral oophorectomy. Surgical menopause can occur at any age before natural menopause occurs. The symptoms of surgical menopause are generally more intense than when menopause occurs naturally.
Examples:
Surgical menopause occurs only when both ovaries are surgically removed.
